I implemented groups in @pixelfed back in 2021, but never shipped it

It lead to Mastodon and other projects to start working on groups too

The main reason I've been holding off is because I want to get this right and provide a FB like groups experience

I'm no longer putting this off, and @pixelfed Groups will set a high bar in terms of group administration, moderation and portability.

It's not who did it first, it's who did it right 😎

@dansup @pixelfed that looks fantastic! From the recent feedback on lemmy and kbin, it looks like moderation tools/features are more important than the actual user facing stuff. Having never mod’d a community it's not something that really occurred to me, but I see how crucial it is now

Cool, though facebook-groups was always pretty crappy wasn't it? I'm sure you can find better ways to index and order posts than whatever mad algorithm they used.

@dansup @pixelfed Awesome!

You may also want to look at the Flickr group experience; IMHO, it works nicely for themed photography, and has useful affordances such as configurable per-user throttling

I am so pumped for groups! Imo they'll make it so much easier for new people to find interesting content and people to follow. They'll also make the #Fediverse stickier so that people are more likely to stay after each wave as they're more connected to the communities that matter to them.

The interface and implementation have to be right though, which is why I'm excited this is coming from you who have a good handle on these things.

Just look after yourself along the way! ❤️
