Thanks to everyone who reached out, fediDB.org and fediverse.info will remain online going forward.

I'm not going anywhere either, though I think I need a break from the fediverse for a few days.

dansup

Fedidb.org and fediverse.info will be shut down in a month

Edit: They will remain online and will not be shut down!

@dansup Excellent. It's a great piece of work.

bigTanuki

@dansup anyone who takes moment to explore the fantastic tools available for newcomers to the Fediverse (like myself) will immediately see you fingerprints on everything. It is pelear you are working your butt off for others!
Thank you and don’t listen to haters.

Gary Parker

@dansup Dan, you’ve done amazing work with this and pixelfed, don’t throw it all away over some trolls and drama.

Take a week off; hell, take a month or two. But clear your head and come back less angry and hurt. This will all still be here (yes, the good *and* the bad), ready to be made better.

@dansup Know that for every a**hole who dogpiled you because you don't meet their definition of ideological purity, there are 30 people who appreciate your selfless, volunteer efforts.

@dansup will miss you here. I hope you will be back soon

@dansup take care, and take all the time you need. In my thoughts and in my heart 💜

I think Lemmy will not only overtake PeerTube, but also Misskey, and Kbin will surge to 200k users within the next month. #threadiverse

@Daniel Supernault does fedidb.org already offer the possibility to bet on fedi market share?
lunchy

@dansup idea: integration between lemmy and peertube to host uploaded videos on partnered peertube instances and share bandwidth between viewers?

vuñuelo

@dansup Hey! Wondering if you have considered removing the instances that are experiencing automated spam sign-ups. The data the graph is showing right now is not very useful to gauge the growth of the threadiverse. You can find some more info and a list of these instances here: lemm.ee/post/197715

Meta blocked #joinPixelfed a month ago (later was fixed, multiple ppl can confirm), I’ve tried to be understanding and respectful but why?

I’ve never been contacted by them about p92 and never attended any meetings, do you honestly think I would work with meta????

@dansup I didn't think you would TBH. Gotta say though Meta reaching out or responding is mire concerning than promising.

I am not strident in my views on blocking "Threads" or whatever...same moderation policies will largely apply as to other large instances (given their track record they will probably get silenced here fairly quickly lol) but Meta is trying to do to AP what Google did to XMPP...contain it away from mainstream use...and all interactions with them (including federating with them) have to be made in this context in mind.

@dansup Was this not sort of an indication of considering working with Meta? Or did I read something incorrectly?

@edendestroyer @ariadne @rysiek I was not present at the meeting, and never signed an NDA.

@dansup

Do you know if we have an official "position" from @Gargron on this "Meta joining the fediverse" thing?

I notice mastodon.social has not yet signed that "we'll block Meta" pledge.

Bluntly, if mastodon.social is supporting Meta in any way, I'll be pushing for a pledge to block them, too.

Stories and push notifications will be coming to iOS first!

Get ready 🚀

@dansup
Is it open source? I can't find the github page. Are you planning on releasing the app on fdroid ? Thanks for your hard work.

Isaac W :verified: :verified:

@dansup This is definitely for the far future but I think it would be super cool if there was a separate organization in charge of a common format for stories. Since TikTok/Snapchat/Instagram/Facebook/Twitter all have very similar stories mechanics, it would be awesome if there was a common format that could be used for everything from Pixelfed stories to Matrix groups. There could even be SDKs that would make it super easy for app devs to add story functionality to their Fediverse apps!

@dansup @pixelfed woah. that puts it into perspective. I guess Reddit is bigger than Twitter, so Reddit shedding users creates a massive wave of demand for fedi solutions

fedi reddit feddit heh

Reprobate

@dansup @pixelfed Maybe. There needs to be a professionally "feeling" instance out there. Lemmy is okay but the UI is clunky, spaced awkwardly and the experience isn't *too* inviting. It can work, but the 'reddit-clone' part of the fediverse needs more maturation.

Vin

@dansup @pixelfed I have to admit this is my first time hearing of misskey. is it another twitter-like, but targeted at a japanese audience? that would make sense (twitter is huge in japan) but I just want to make sure I have that right

Nacho

@dansup drake mentioning me is so familiar

Henry

@dansup Well, for starter the Pixelfed logo should have a redesign, somehow it gives me a vibe of old day google. The App logo is so Instagram.......so obvious

Nevarius

@dansup is it already possible to add/view stories in the app? :blobcat:

@dansup
Thanks for this. If we see there's a nice place with no excuse for any kind of discrimination and where people can freely create their own groups we might just make an account.

Fúlvio Leo

@dansup I tend to subscribe to the supposed 'standard' thing, like mastodon.social and pixelfed.social. There's no reason for this, I just like the simple name.

I might go to kbin.social to keep the pattern :v

andymeak

@dansup what's the difference between kbin and lemmy, I'm not sure it's worth to join either when I can use mastodon plus my own RSS feed

dansup

Grouped notifications in the @pixelfed app are so nice, I should implement them in the web UI too 🤔 #pixelfed

Pixelfed grouped notifications
DELETED

@dansup @pixelfed
When I get notifications, I'd rather see which of my posts are getting interaction rather than lead with who is interacting with me, but maybe that's me.

dansup

Shared ModLists is one reason why the @pixelfed mobile app release is being delayed.

User safety is fundamental, and not just some task that can be delayed.

I'm really looking forward to publishing the FEP for Shared Moderation Lists, and shipping the feature in Pixelfed 😁

Simon

@dansup @pixelfed I had no idea you were working on that but YES! Shared moderation could be a gamechanger!

dansup

Shared ModLists, a feature that allows you to create + curate block/mute lists of accounts, and share them with specific friends.

If the list creator grants edit permissions, any friend can add a block/muted account and all friends will block/mute that account

Coming soon to @pixelfed! #sharedModLists

Shoq

@dansup @pixelfed Are you addressing the notorious false positive problem that made block lists hated in many circles on Twitter? The case where anyone can slip any personal enemy into the list for random reasons, and end up cutting them off from thousands of their mutuals and never even alerting the victim to it? They just disappeared from their friends and associates with no awareness or recourse. It was very toxic.

dansup

It's not often appreciated, but I have to say, how Mastodon internals work in terms of performance and scalability are top notch and sets the bar for other projects.

It's not the language that matters, the database is the bottleneck, and more importantly how you manage the data schema and structures!

@dansup gotosocial performs far, far beyond mastodon. It mighn't *scale* as well, but it *performs* much better.

This difference is very important. Mastodon might serve thousands of users well, it is the worst of all options for a selfhosted -one-man- server.

And IMO fediverse software should optimize for small to tiny servers. Mastodon optimizes for big to huge servers.

Alper Çuğun-Gscheidel

@dansup I thought Ruby/Rails had missed the boat on async?

Gary Parker

@dansup I see a lot of mastodon “alternatives” with a selling point of them being far less complex to set up and administer, with fewer “moving parts”. I’m guessing the trade off is that they don’t scale as well?

dansup

I believe that fediDB.org is becoming a valuable resource to the fediverse, and it's grown beyond me and my project

I'd like to steward it for another year, and then pass it on to a trustworthy organization, and allow it to evolve without my influence or bias towards Pixelfed!

fediverse.info too, and the activitypub.social/io domains I own, I pledge these to the fediverse to be used for the good of humanity ❤️

@dansup thanks for your work. We need more people in the world like you!

dansup

I have big plans for fedidb.org, including re-launching the ActivityPub developer tools.

I will need help though, and not with coding, we will need people to help curate everthing, input data about new projects (website, description, etc) and help detect potential spammy/fake instance stats.

Is this something that you'd be interested in?

Darnell Clayton :verified:

@dansup That would be helpful as there are some spammy sites or test sites that make the list on #Fediverse tracking websites, & when you visit the instance they clearly state that the instance is a test site (so activity & accounts are fake).

johanna, at the cafe counter

@dansup hey Dan! Yes, interested, can I help? I am a recently unemployed IT support pro looking for an excuse to find a new focus.

Scott Blaydes

@dansup sure. Just let me know what is needed and the time needed.

dansup

I'm considering adding a "clients" category to fedidb.org that will list all known fediverse apps, and a compatibility matrix to be able to compare them.

I started working on a "software comparison" feature that allows you to compare various features of X software, I will probably need the communities help to finish the feature database, I think it has a lot of potential.

This also can be duplicated to list activitypub compatibility between projects, which is super exciting!

@dansup I have been keeping a few massive lists of different clients and would love to help with this initiative, where would be the best place to get involved?

James Basoo

@dansup Oh that sounds awesome. It took me ages to find a client with the features I wanted and a nice UI.

BitR1ot

@dansup I’d love to have a maintained list of clients. It would be really interesting to know when new entires are added, maybe a RSS feed or something? It would be amazing if you had stats for active users so shifts in usage could be visualized; do you have that data for clients?
