Ideally we could eliminate file size limit constraints by resizing to max dimensions (1920x1920) and converting to AVIF #pixeldev

Oblomov

@dansup I would rather have file size limit that resolution limits. Also I would love it if PixelFed relied on JPEG-XL as primary storage option, although I understand that this would be problematic given the limited support for the format —some way to transcode to a supported format on the fly would be necessary.

dansup

Testing a more performant media pipeline with mov, AVIF, HEIC and HEVC support!

We'll also be generating preview and thumbnail media in AVIF format (with option to preserve original file, without stripping color profiles)

This should improve UX, especially on the mobile app 🚀 #pixelfed

Григорий Клюшников

I tried AVIF in Smithereen once. It took actual time to save each image. Like, hundreds of milliseconds. Decided to stay on webp for now.

RayJW

@dansup have you considered looking into JPEG XL? With the Apple Ecosystem adding support this might be the way to go, also because it's the only format that doesn't limit me in my photography so far.

Working on a #fediverse growth bot, using data from @FediDB with more accurate data and graphs

dansup

I find it ironic that all those people who'd make jokes about Mastodon, and how heavy it is compared to fedi alternatives, would go on to use one of them, only to run into performance issues when they reached a certain scale.

Yeah Mastodon uses a lot more ram than pleroma, but that's because of redis.

Mastodon never stored raw AP objects, and never subjected admins to hours long migrations due to bad schema planning.

I'd like to see another project scale like Mastodon or Pixelfed does 😉

Bèr Kessels 🐝 🚐 🏄 🌱

@dansup there's different vectors in performance.

Mastodon performs well for large (and huge) communities. But it performs terrible for single person setups. E.g. #gotosocial is the reverse. It performs very well for a tiny community, but far worse for a (ten) thousand user instance.

I'm still convinced the fediverse should push for many small instances.

dansup

The @mastodonusercount bot reports inaccurate counts btw

It counts instances (and users) that have been shutdown for years, and does not properly handle spam or fake instance stat counts

I should make a more accurate bot using fedidb.org data (which removes instances + counts which have been down for longer than 2 weeks)

Jungle George 🌴🌳🌲🍃

@dansup @mastodonusercount looking at the user numbers (and particularly active users) on fedidb.org it definitely paints a different picture

Semmelstulle

@dansup @mastodonusercount maybe this is why big tech has an eye on the Fediverse - it's hard to get accurate numbers and they can embellish numbers to their advantage haha

dansup

It's been 3 years since I came out, and I still get asked "are you sure your gay"

I get asked this almost every day, and from the same person

My partner, I'm sorry I never watched every season of drag race, or know all the real housewives before I came out

He's taught me a lot haha, it be your own people sometimes 😂 😅

p.s - Jimbo better win, and we stan Teresa Guidice in this house *flips table*

Sean C.

@dansup been out for 26 years and still never watched Drag Race or any of the Real Housewives

(ノ◕ヮ◕)ノ*:・゚✧*:・゚✧

@dansup This just made me love pixelfed 10,000x more, representivity matters y’all

1sthisbetter

@dansup next you’re going to say “Who’s Kylie Minogue?”

(Also such a cute story 🥰🎉🏳️‍🌈)

dansup

Why be racist, sexist, homophobic, or transphobic when you could just be quiet?

@dansup my headcannon it’s that they are just jealous: if they can’t have it, like petty children, no one can

meriksson

@dansup Insecurity does not work that way, sadly.

dansup

Wow, rude!!!

IGNORE

(Reports against admins can only be ignored on pixelfed)

Sean Macツ

@dansup
cute photo tho... maybe they thought the report was a 👍

lol

dansup

I don't have many followers compared to some more established fediverse developers, but I will use my following to spread awareness of less known fediverse projects and initiatives when I can.

If you have a legit fediverse related project or initiative you'd like me to boost, don't hesitate to DM me!

We're all in this together, and fuck follower counts, we're all equals ❤️

Meow.tar.gz :verified:

@dansup This is the first time that I have not really cared so much about follower counts. Follower counts seem to be immaterial and don't matter in the #fediverse

dansup

Kbam for Kbin is coming along!

I suggest you follow @hariette and her app #artemis for now

She is building an amazing Kbin app inspired by Apollo which is iconic, my app Kbam will be a bit different as I don't want to duplicate her efforts

Fediverse app developers like her are often underappreciated, please let her know how much you appreciate the efforts of a Kbin app ❤️

@dansup I think she may have been private temporarily but not anymore

Looking forward to what you’ll come up with. I love Apollo but I have 3 lemmy apps that all look like Apollo…. I think people are trying too hard to be an Apollo replacement when really they should try to be more original. I do need a kbin app though

Steven Roose

@dansup @aakselrod @hariette Are the c2s APIs so different that one has to create apps dedicated to either #kbin or #Lemmy?

dansup

It's such a pleasure to work on fediverse projects like @pixelfed, fedidb.org, fediverse.info and kbam!

Really appreciate all the support, but don't worry about me 😎

I'm a burnout but I'm not finna burnout, being able to build projects like these is a dream and y'all keep me energized 🚀

@dansup
Looking forward to Kbam 💥 on Android.
Wish you the best on this journey. And please, take care of yourself.

dansup

Tbh, the whole twitter rate limit thing is interesting from a privacy standpoint.

Pixelfed has limited apis for anon users and required login for certain actions, and now I’m kind of conflicted.

The point of this was not to create a walled garden, but rather to deter mass crawling, this is why we also return empty outbox and follower/following activitypub collections.

Maybe a privacy friendly default with the option to make your public data more accessible via api is a better solution, wdyt?

@dansup sounds good to me but at the same time, twitter’s utility grew into public service, so a different case use

Ian Douglas Scott

@dansup I would just question whether that's a feasible goal to achieve. Not sure how well it works with Pixelfed currently, but making content publicly available to anyone who wants to view it (even through other federated servers) may just be fundamentally incompatible with any reliable way to prevent scraping.

And promising privacy features that are impossible to actually uphold may be counter-productive. (For instance, how Snapchat's ephemerality has always been possible to circumvent.)

@dansup Mastodon has an opt-in for search engine indexing. That seems reasonable to me.

dansup

I think I figured out the TestFlight issue, will know shortly if it works 🤞

dansup

Nope, still getting errors, ffs.

The error seems to be a "missing contract", so likely will require Apple to rectify this on their side, cursory googles show that others have had to reach out as well, so unfortunately, we have to wait 😔

dansup

Well it appears I have to contact Apple support in order to fix the TestFlight situation.

My apologies to our iOS users 😒

dansup

The @pixelfed app testflight sitch is almost fixed 😅

dansup

Welp, accidentally just expired all my #pixelfedApp builds.

Don't worry if you already joined, I just have to publish a new build and you'll get a notification.

Just need to finish the comment UI refactor 😅

Elliot

@dansup never push to prod on a… Sunday??

dansup

Love using ChatGPT when I'm stuck on challenging things, like regexes in React Native, I didn't know positive lookbehinds were not supported!

I've used it quite a bit lately, it helped write a few pixelfed.blog posts too 😉

dansup

Back to #pixelfedApp development!

Will be jumping back to kbam and the new fediverse.info microsite in the next day or two!
