I figured out the issue with Android and the video editor/Stories feature! Now this will get exciting, you will be able to add and remix custom sounds too, ala TikTok.

Short form video has always been in our dna, though we haven’t given it the attention it deserves, with Loops, you will have a separate feed to browse with just short looping videos!

Don’t want to see them? Hide them, and all videos if you prefer!

Shipping soon to our Android app!

@dansup You are really going all out to give us a great service! Thank you! 🙌

Geotechland

@dansup Thats a good idea separate the feeds!

dansup

With nav menu VS without nav menu

The latter looks cleaner, and will support left/right swipe to quickly change feeds

@dansup This looks sick! Love the better use of space. I am concerned new users won't be aware there's other menus though. Is there a way to add maybe a couple pixel high bar at the top where the nav menu would be? Something to prompt the user to swipe to show other feeds/indicate which feed you're on? Just a thought...

Lukas

@dansup how about having the menu when you’re at the top of the site, and make it disappear when you scroll? And still support left / right swiping? Multiple ways to access a feature isn’t a bad approach

@dansup looks pretty good, time to get rid of instagram too, after twitter and reddit

dansup

I guess I'll be focusing on Android for the time being, still waiting for a TestFlight resolution.

Thankfully I don't need approval to ship an android apk 😉

jlapoutre

@dansup oh that is weird; earlier this year Apple awash far more responsive with app revies]ws than Google. I dare even say more transparent 😇

@dansup For most people it's a 4-day weekend, for some, 5. I'm sorry you hit a problem in the middle of it.

dansup

✨ Made a few changes, here are some highlights:

⚡ Hashtag following
⚡ Boosts appear in home feed
⚡ Simpler navigation between feeds (swipe left/right)
⚡ New For You feed using simple algorithm
⚡ Unread DM counter badge
⚡ Privacy friendly translations

Shipping soon! #pixelfedApp

@dansup so in this app "public feed"="local feed" and "network feed"="global feed"? should feed names match those on the website version?

Elias Probst

@dansup I fail to find the repository/issue tracker of the #Android #Pixelfed App to report minor findings…
Isn't it #OpenSource (yet)?

dansup

Threads will be released on July 6 apparently

@dansup okey we have 3 days to block it and pay back the blow we got in 2012 / 2015.

anthonii

@dansup I'm definitely curious to see how this will turn out.

Clayton Errington 🖥️

@dansup excited to see the outcome of this for the internets sake, but this is a bit much. If it needs what Instagram uses, it makes sense as you are sharing the same account, just a different medium. From a corporate perspective using instagram as your launch window is a good place to start over Facebook.

dansup

Android #pixelfedApp users on 1.0.0.24, what do you think of the improved read more feature and auto linker? Non Latin hashtags are now properly linkified, and the url link bug was fixed!

Stories and Video will be rolling out tonight on Android first, what a plot twist.

GMate8

@dansup you do an awesome job on Pixelfed, Dan, no worries.

dansup

An apple engineer reached out about my support inquiry, hoping the can get this fixed so I can ship new TestFlight builds for all the iOS users!

@dansup Patiently awaiting! And while I do, Vernissage is pretty good! Although I wish it had a classic tab bar instead of shoving it all in the navbar, oh well!

@dansup me, months after buying the domain, after typing 'git init', before abandoning the project for a few more months. At least.

@dansup I'm looking forward to it.
I use @pixelfed on the iPad (using testflight) and I can't wait to use it on the phone (waiting for it to get to the play store).

Karrbs

@dansup
Will this include stories for mobile android?

@dansup lemmy.world with just 25k ? I doubt.

@dansup I think people are really hungry for something like pixelfed. I can't wait

@dansup Broken Twitter really drives Japanese otaku to Misskey huh

dansup

I'm still waiting to hear back from Apple regarding the Pixelfed TestFlight 😅

@dansup user experience 101: sign up the user and immediately ban them

JohnW

@dansup No worries. They only got a couple teraflops of data on you for the 3 seconds you were there.

dansup

How are these options for sorting/filtering instances?

Any I should change, or add? Feedback appreciated!

Flo

@dansup Good options, and about just the right number of options. Any more and users might be overwhelmed. However, an option “the most popular one” might be what some (many?) users are looking for. Yes, that might not be what Fediverse advocates want to suggest, but, well, it’s about the users, isn’t it?

Ruth / anarchae

@dansup I'm aware of why you might not want to include "I want the biggest instance" as an option, but I think most naive users *think* that's what they want. Some clarity on what "smaller" means & a "none of the above" option may cover that, otherwise people will quit at that step. Is it also safe to assume "I am interested in a specific topic" is another page? I also would question the wording of "specific feature or limit" - what does that mean? Does it include moderation rules?

Paul Rohr

@dansup I love the idea of steering people towards the "perfect mastodon community" for them, but faceting on aspects like scale or longevity seems rather indirect + impersonal.

Shouldn't the goal instead be to match folks up with a home community (+ thus suitable moderation policies) based on however they happen to primarily identify?

2. interests
3. place-based
4. general

Finishing up the new fediverse.info onboarding microsite, will be publishing the source code and looking for translations in a bit 👀

@dansup I'm not sure "picking software" is right here, but I can't quite articulate why, beyond: I don't think most people care about software really, and there's also all the forks of projects & changes over time

Josh Holme

@dansup Accidentally left the test flight for pizelfed today 🤦🏻‍♂️ Anyway to get back in?

dansup

Ideally we could eliminate file size limit constraints by resizing to max dimensions (1920x1920) and converting to AVIF #pixeldev

Oblomov

@dansup I would rather have file size limit that resolution limits. Also I would love it if PixelFed relied on JPEG-XL as primary storage option, although I understand that this would be problematic given the limited support for the format —some way to transcode to a supported format on the fly would be necessary.

dansup

Testing a more performant media pipeline with mov, AVIF, HEIC and HEVC support!

We'll also be generating preview and thumbnail media in AVIF format (with option to preserve original file, without stripping color profiles)

This should improve UX, especially on the mobile app 🚀 #pixelfed

Григорий Клюшников

I tried AVIF in Smithereen once. It took actual time to save each image. Like, hundreds of milliseconds. Decided to stay on webp for now.

RayJW

@dansup have you considered looking into JPEG XL? With the Apple Ecosystem adding support this might be the way to go, also because it's the only format that doesn't limit me in my photography so far.

dansup

Working on a #fediverse growth bot, using data from @FediDB with more accurate data and graphs

dansup

I find it ironic that all those people who'd make jokes about Mastodon, and how heavy it is compared to fedi alternatives, would go on to use one of them, only to run into performance issues when they reached a certain scale.

Yeah Mastodon uses a lot more ram than pleroma, but that's because of redis.

Mastodon never stored raw AP objects, and never subjected admins to hours long migrations due to bad schema planning.

I'd like to see another project scale like Mastodon or Pixelfed does 😉

Bèr Kessels 🐝 🚐 🏄 🌱

@dansup there's different vectors in performance.

Mastodon performs well for large (and huge) communities. But it performs terrible for single person setups. E.g. #gotosocial is the reverse. It performs very well for a tiny community, but far worse for a (ten) thousand user instance.

I'm still convinced the fediverse should push for many small instances.
