My daughter is trying to convince me that the phrase "social butterfly" implies the existence of a "social caterpiller", which justifies her wrapping herself in a quilt, her "social cocoon", and refusing to get up today.

I have to admit it's a pretty good argument. Solid wordplay, reasonable-sounding if ridiculous conclusions, ticks all the boxes. Kinda dad-proud right now, gotta say.

@mhoye This is just great, you are the second person I've seen boost this onto my tl, I love it.

@mhoye not to nitpick, but this would technically result in a social moth

When someone says that they just can't quit Twitter, what I hear is, "I am comfortable in a room full of nazis," and I will remember that about them.

@fraying And not even just being *comfortable* in the room with nazis, but comfortable with them having access to every fucking post and interaction they have on the platform.

Derek Powazek 🐐

Actually, Twitter isn't just a room full of nazis. It's a room full of nazis in a building owned by a nazi who is currently working to get a nazi dictator elected, where your participation helps the nazi cause.

So, yeah. Gonna remember that.

Ángela Stella Matutina

@fraying

Fun fact, people who don't understand English see about as many nazis on Twitter as anywhere else, i.e., small groups which are easily blocked.

The general public doesn’t adopt digital technologies. It adopts products.

People don’t use TCP/IP and HTTP. They browse websites on the web with a browser.

They don’t use SMTP and IMAP. They send and receive emails.

One of the toughest challenges of our time is to develop appealing products and open standards simultaneously.

Those are primarily not technical but social and political problems.

@thibaultamartin It’s amazing how hard this message is to spread. It’s as if the people who make things don’t interact with potential customers! 😏

wordsmith ⁂

@thibaultamartin "there's no demand for IPv6". Of course not. Only 0.001% of folk *should* care about IP protocol types. What people and organisations want is that their apps and services work, which means upgrading the legacy Internet to something that works with the quantities we face today, at the qualities demanded.

@thibaultamartin Or they are computer literacy issues.

Not knowing what httpS is means you can't figure out if the site you're connecting to has any assurance of identity.

I've often said that a problem with "Linux desktop" type movements is that they try to sell users on a non-committal soup of UIs, so that only users who understand formats & protocols will be able to find what they need in the OS. But there is a balance that has to be struck somewhere; users can't navigate computing in general unless they gain a level of understanding of formats & protocols.

Me: "#Frankenstein ... wow, what a monster."
Them: "That's a popular misconception, Frankenstein was the scientist."
Me: "That's a popular misconception. Frankenstein was the classic #techbro who didn't give a damn about the consequences of what he did and ignored all common ethical considerations. By all reasonable modern-day measures he was indeed the damn monster."

I decided to bite the bullet last night: try to learn how to take photos of the #Aurora
I use lots of settings on my camera, but mostly choosing focus points and adjusting light sensitivity and amount of light- but it's more like choose the effect and camera does the actual settings of aperture and shutter speed! (more in replies)
So- not great quality, but they give some idea. The camera sees much stronger colours than the eye- I toned them down but still not quite true #photography #Alberta

cohan

So I had to finally learn how to make real manual settings (Aperture should be this-okay, how do I set aperture? shutterspeed should be--okay, how do I set that? lol)...lol.. in the end I still have more to learn (about the camera and also tripod use!) . The photos I got are not 'good'- I'd like them sharper- a balance between slow shutter speeds that let in more light, and faster to catch the movement. I also need to work in the colour balance-- whenever I get a chance to try again! #Aurora

Today on International Day of the Girl I’m thinking of the hundreds of girls who remain in limbo with their families in Australia, seeking asylum, many born here, forced to grow up in homes where their parents are often not allowed to work, have no Medicare or a safety net.

Do you live in #Danmark? Doyou have an old oil or wood heating system that you want to replace with something less harmful for the planet? This is your moment to request a subsidy to switch to a #heatpump. sparenergi.dk/privat/soeg-tils
We did this a few years ago and while the red tape was quite stressful, a heat pump really pays off in the long term - also for how easy it is to use.

@tefferbear There's a flashing neon sign in my head that says Laika Studios.

When she's older, finances permitting, she may want to consider the Emily Carr University of Art + Design here in Vancouver, or Sheridan College in Brampton, ON. I can guarantee they'd let her in if these were in her portfolio.

Or, if it turns out there's something else she's interested in studying, or doesn't want to study at all, stop-motion can be something she does just for enjoyment. ☺️

@tefferbear this is lovely, please tell them I really enjoyed this! 😍

#TIL by putting sheep wool around your plants in the garden you can protect them against both slugs and droughts!
Slugs simply can't move through or over it (also useful for raised beds in your garden!) and the wool prevents the soil from drying up as quick. And it's fully bio-degradable, of course!

So useful!
