First of Lothian’s fully electric double deck buses hit the road - #LothianBuses
lothianbuses.com/news/2024/09/

Next level Ev's... 😉

Zei er nog iemand 'waterstof' als het om publiek transport gaat? 😇

While awaiting delivery of the buses, extensive works have been underway (...). Once plugged in, it will take just 3-4 hours to fully charge the batteries powering each bus.

There are not enough New Zealand posts about trains and railways on Mastodon. Please do something about this.

@billbennett There are not enough New Zealand ✂️ trains and railways ✂️. Please do something about this.

(Fixed it for you)

@billbennett My grandparents lived opposite the railway station at Wingatui from about 1954 to 1990. We spent many happy days playing at the station. Nowadays it's closed as an actual railway station. Trains still pass through of course, like this one back in 2015.

I've wanted to make this visual #dadjoke for some time, today I found the required raw material in a local opshop

On the road on the road on the road

Future Sprog, XP

Thanks. That’s a good article.

Those remote recognition things also bring up the already existing problem of right of access to and correction of information.

In the past someone would have to look me in the eye and tell me I’m a bad person but now the computer does it automatically and in the most shoddy way possible, and even after trying to get it fixed (because it’s their mistake) I still have problems. Automatic problems. No human intervention required.

Check out our talk “Eradicating Hepatitis C with Bio-Terrorism” at DEFCON 32. It shows the entire MicroLab stack and software suite and explains why we do what we do.

And with that I've completed #20books20days - it's been really fun to think over my life and the books that have been impactful. There are a few books from authors that have turned out to be deeply problematic that I haven't included, which is sad, but I think appropriate, even though some say you can separate the art from the artist....

At the end of the 19th century, economists were arguing that poverty was caused by there being too many people for the surrounding land to support. Evidence for this was that one saw almost no poverty in frontier towns, and plenty of poverty in large cities. Limited resources could only be stretched so thin.

Henry George, in his book "Progress and Poverty", called BS on this. Due to specialisation of labour, he argued each additional person meant there'd be *more* to go around, not less.

🧵

Paul Fenwick

In a frontier town, yes, everyone can cut their own wood, mend their own shoes, and gather their own food.

But in a new frontier town, everyone *has* to do these things, because there is no woodcutter, no cobbler, no grocer.

George argued that frontier towns didn't have abject poverty because they *also* didn't support grandiose wealth. The conditions of the frontier were leveling.

We've all heard 'You can't beat Wellington on a good day', but how do you know when it's a good day?

I've built a website that checks the weather in Wellington, compares it against a predefined set of rules to determine if it is a Good Day or not (according to me).

I was thinking of releasing it on a URL like 'canyoubeatwellington.co.nz'

Is it worth the 30 bucks or so for the domain and hosting, or do I just keep it as a fun little private project?

@Pat Great concept! It reminds me of this one about snow in Ōtepoti, which is obviously less complex and often just says yes or no 😆 isitsnowingindunedin.co.nz/

@Pat I love it. And I don't even live in Wellington any more.

Sub.club is here to help the fediverse make money.

From @theverge: "The idea is that this will let users on ActivityPub-based platforms like Mastodon easily offer paid subscriptions and premium content while taking a 6 percent cut in addition to payment processing fees. It could solve a big problem with the fediverse right now: it’s not easy to make a living on it unless you direct your followers back to existing platforms like Patreon."

Some people say a man is made outta mud
A poor man's made outta muscle and blood
Muscle and blood and skin and bones
A mind that's a-weak and a back that's strong
You load 16 tons, what do you get?
Another day older and deeper in debt
St. Peter, don't you call me 'cause I can't go
I owe my soul to the company store
I was born one mornin' when the sun didn't shine
I picked up my shovel and I walked to the mine
I loaded 16 tons of number nine coal
And the straw boss said, "Well, a-bless my soul"
You load 16 tons, what do you get?
Another day older and deeper in debt
St. Peter, don't you call me 'cause I can't go
I owe my soul to the company store
I was born one mornin', it was drizzlin' rain
Fightin' and trouble are my middle name
I was raised in the canebrake by an ol' mama lion
Can't no high toned woman make me walk the line
You load 16 tons, what do you get?
Another day older and deeper in debt
St. Peter, don't you call me 'cause I can't go
I owe my soul to the company store
If you see me comin', better step aside
A lotta men didn't, a lotta men died
One fist of iron, the other of steel
If the right one don't get you
Then the left one will
You load 16 tons, what do you get?
Another day older and deeper in debt
St. Peter, don't you call me 'cause I can't go
I owe my soul to the company store

@paulisci Who keeps telling us about this predicted shortened work week length? Moreover, why hasn't these prognostications come to pass if they were so evident?

On the #Brazil ban: I'm kind of surprised the joinmastodon website doesn't have a section welcoming Brazilian users, showing them the best servers. If you filter on 'South America', you get one (yes, 1) server suggestion. I've seen lists showing many more.

Also, where is Eugen in the media? Bluesky boasts 1 million sign ups in the last three days. Where is Mastodon in the headlines? Surely *now* is the time to introduce people to this network? After all, *now* is the time tens of millions of people are looking for a new home.

I've said it before and I'll say it again: establishing a network effect (that is, people being on a platform that you want to follow) is the single most determinant for people bothering to join a social media network and staying there. Moments like these come by rarely and should be snatched up as if they were candy.

Fr fr. We need to run local mastodon meetups and as many forms of evangelism as possible.

ohmrun

@collectifission It would be interesting to know how many calls Eugen has had from the media on this matter.
I'd say in the region of the square root of fuck all.

jwz

@collectifission @cstross So, I agree with you about the missed opportunity, but I feel the "where's Eugen" dig is very unfair. Mastodon gGmbH is like 4 people and they're all coders, not marketing. The fediverse is an intentionally decentralized collective, not organized like a startup running user-acquisition campaigns.

Nobody executed the highly skilled labor you (and I) wish would have happened because there is literally no one being paid to do that, because Mastodon is not a company,.

Today, the Klamath River is flowing freely for the first time in more than 100 years.

The dams have been removed. The ecosystems are being nurtured. And sovereignty has been restored to the Shasta Indian Nation over another 2800 acres. Good things are happening. Great things are possible. lostcoastoutpost.com/2024/aug/
