Get Out Of Jail Free cards for friends and family of cops who are pulled over in #TrafficStops, but the same infraction could cost a #BlackAmerican their life!

#NYPD officer lands $175K settlement over ‘courtesy cards’ that help drivers get out of traffic stops

NEW YORK (AP) — "A New York City police officer has reached a $175,000 settlement with the city in a lawsuit that illuminated the use of the 'courtesy cards' that officers dole out to friends and relatives to get out of traffic stops and other minor infractions, according to an agreement filed in Manhattan federal court Monday.

"The deal brings an end to a lawsuit brought last year by Officer Mathew Bianchi that claimed he’d been punished by his superiors for failing to honor the cards, though the settlement itself makes no substantive changes to how the cards are used by NYPD officers.

"The laminated cards, which typically bear an image of an NYPD badge and the name of one of the city’s police unions, are not officially recognized by the police department but have long been treated as a perk of the job.

"The city’s #PoliceUnions issue them to members, who circulate them among those who want to signal their NYPD connections — often to get out of minor infractions such as speeding or failing to wear a seat belt."

@croyle @dave_andersen I think it’s worse than Coinbase taking your money.

This is like a company setting fire to your money when you handed it to them in the wrong way. You don’t have it and they don’t have it (and so they can’t give you a product or service in return).

However, as Bitcoin has a finite supply, this will never be recovered and comes with a slightly deflationary effect. One day all Bitcoins will be held by nobody.

It’s economically moronic.

what if sisyphus got a coin every time he rolled the boulder up the hill and then he could spend his coins in the shop to level up his pushing ability but each time he leveled up the boulder also got heavier so the challenge remains the same despite feeling like progression has been made. and what if he was able to unlock sisyphus minions that could roll the boulder up the hill while he was away. also every time he starts a new roll an ad plays. and also he can choose to watch an ad every time he drops the boulder to receive 2x coins for that round. and also you can buy fun skins for the boulder through microtransactions

Let’s be explicitly clear.

The Electoral College exists because enslavers wanted to count their enslaved in their vote total without freeing them, much less giving them voting rights. That is the one purpose the Electoral College ever served.

Pro Electoral College is pro white supremacy. Abolish it.

@QasimRashid also article 5.5 of the constitution, which disallows any change to the Senate via the amendment process.

John Alston Ii

@QasimRashid kind of reminds me of that line in the first Pirates of the Caribbean..

In a population-based election, cities would overpower the voter count of smaller towns..

" Well, that doesn't give me much incentive to fight fair."

It's weird because you flip it around and you get gerrymandering for other political roles, but no, having all the people decide the vote is wrong because W Bush and Trump lost their first popular vote.

It has come to my attention that there are younger folks who haven’t heard of Five Geek Social Fallacies.

It was written in 2003 and the social dynamics stay real. Once you read it, you’ll see them everywhere.

@ian GSF2 is RAMPANT on AO3. The comment culture there (unlike FFN, where comments are called "reviews") is such that any criticism, no matter how polite or constructive, is considered taboo, rude, and offensive unless the author explicitly invites it.

Anything less favourable than "omg i love this story this is the best thing ever omg" is met with (ironically, considering GSF1 is also quite prevalent there for the most part) uninhibited vitriol telling the critic to go fuck themselves and die and stop being so negative and they're probably an "anti" anyway.

And despite this violent form of GSF2, GSF1 dominates the site as well, because any attempt to discuss trolls, rampant racism and misogyny, etc. on the site is also met with accusations of being an "anti", wanting "censorship", and whatnot.

@exocomics when I first got my old cat, he has no concept that love bites are meant to be gentle, so his love is always harder to deal with than when he's being an intentional little shit. I never knew if I should bite back and get a mouthful of fur or something.

Turned out immediately walk off and ignore him worked really well

Jonathan T

@exocomics #Alt4You: A four panel cartoon of a wide-eyed cat and its owner's arm. Panel 1: "I bite." the cat's teeth are visible as it bites the hand, and its claws are out grabbing the hand and arm. Panel 2: "I sorry." The cat's tongue is out, licking the hand, and the claws are retracted. Panel 3: "I bite again". Similar to 1 but the cat looks angrier. Panel 4: In brackets, "Kicking interlude". Same as 3, but with added back feet furiously kicking against the owner's arm.

When we say "no war but class war", we mean that we'll never raise a rifle against "the evil hordes" of the other side, since we know those "hordes" are made of people just like us, proles. When we say "no war but class war" we understand that our rulers are as evil as the tyrant on the other side. That the crimes of one mirror the crimes of the other, that the elites, in their need to rule the world, know no boundaries to their cruelty. And that makes them equal.

In 2020, Montreal closed 2 km of road to cars for a 2 month trial to encourage pedestrians.

Business owners were outraged, convinced it would destry their sales.

Instead, the street filled with crowds and sales went up. Now Montreal has 10 km of roads they close seasonally.

AI is \*not\* just a tool. It is a pea and thimble game in which a few, very rich people steal our entire cultural and intellectual history, and use it in a way that forever depletes it. It is a way of enclosing the commons. And it's taking us all, the demos, too long to get our collective heads around it because, like the climate, it is so strange to think of it being steal-able that the idea doesn't stick, it doesn't have language to describe and discuss it. 1/3 #AI

@lindawoodrow yes, AI could be the biggest land grab in history.

Big tech is like a data-hungry Pacman. Nom nom nom nom...

But it's OK, you can rent your knowledge back from them.

@lindawoodrow your post has helped me see that it has the same dynamics as this metaphor 👉 mastodon.social/@urlyman/11310

What Ted Chiang last year characterised as the “blurry JPEG of the web” problem is just a subset of the *ever-thinning gruel for dinner* problem 😞

GreenerFutures

@lindawoodrow I strongly agree. There are various analyses of this in the literature. The one which resonates most strongly for me is ‘technofeudelism’ (Yanis Varafoukis), worth a read.

Just watched a video of Hugh Jackman on stage talking about his younger life and his brother telling him doing dance classes would make him a "sissy", then doing a nice little tap medley which was anything but "sissy"... the person posting said that it was maybe one of the coolest things they had seen ... maybe I was not the target audience but it really wasn't a patch on Tom Holland's Lip Sync Battle, which shows unashamedly that male dancing, *even* in a corset, fishnets and wig, is unbelievably kick ass, and one could indeed say, anything but "sissy"!

For those who have not seen it, this was massive on Twitter a few years ago, and you were bound by law to RT it every time it came up in your timeline, and... I'm going to post it here now, where it has occasionally done the rounds but I've not seen it for some time!

After years of study, it's rare that an article substantially shifts my perspective on climate, but this year, this one did.

Why? Because it offers the understanding of how to improve the local climate that affects our lives. Meaningful, life-changing local action, rather than lobbying global governance or drop in the ocean emissions reductions.

Hence your #HabitatRestoration makes so much sense even if/as global change accelerates ✊

About now in Phayakkhaphum Phisai, #Thailand (unnamed road, Maha Sarakham Province, Thailand) there will be a #Heatwave with a wet-bulb temperature of

34°C

This will be a margin of 3 degrees below body temperature which will make activity impossible 💀🛌 #UnlivableWetbulb

The actual temperature will be 34°C

It will feel like 41°C

The humidity will be 99%

There will be overcast clouds

@ricmac @lene @jay Well done on the #eleventy, but did you have to trigger my "I was so drunk I shagged someone whose name I didn't remember, so I had to take her to Starbucks where she had to tell the Barista her name" PTSD from that event?

You can see the hangover in Messina and Beale. Five hundred bucks for that "unconference" was pretty fucked up, though, so I drank to forget.
