NEW YORK (AP) — "A New York City police officer has reached a $175,000 settlement with the city in a lawsuit that illuminated the use of the 'courtesy cards' that officers dole out to friends and relatives to get out of traffic stops and other minor infractions, according to an agreement filed in Manhattan federal court Monday.
"The deal brings an end to a lawsuit brought last year by Officer Mathew Bianchi that claimed he’d been punished by his superiors for failing to honor the cards, though the settlement itself makes no substantive changes to how the cards are used by NYPD officers.
"The laminated cards, which typically bear an image of an NYPD badge and the name of one of the city’s police unions, are not officially recognized by the police department but have long been treated as a perk of the job.
"The city’s #PoliceUnions issue them to members, who circulate them among those who want to signal their NYPD connections — often to get out of minor infractions such as speeding or failing to wear a seat belt."

@ian GSF2 is RAMPANT on AO3. The comment culture there (unlike FFN, where comments are called "reviews") is such that any criticism, no matter how polite or constructive, is considered taboo, rude, and offensive unless the author explicitly invites it.
Anything less favourable than "omg i love this story this is the best thing ever omg" is met with (ironically, considering GSF1 is also quite prevalent there for the most part) uninhibited vitriol telling the critic to go fuck themselves and die and stop being so negative and they're probably an "anti" anyway.
And despite this violent form of GSF2, GSF1 dominates the site as well, because any attempt to discuss trolls, rampant racism and misogyny, etc. on the site is also met with accusations of being an "anti", wanting "censorship", and whatnot.

@exocomics when I first got my old cat, he has no concept that love bites are meant to be gentle, so his love is always harder to deal with than when he's being an intentional little shit. I never knew if I should bite back and get a mouthful of fur or something.

@lindawoodrow I strongly agree. There are various analyses of this in the literature. The one which resonates most strongly for me is ‘technofeudelism’ (Yanis Varafoukis), worth a read.
Just watched a video of Hugh Jackman on stage talking about his younger life and his brother telling him doing dance classes would make him a "sissy", then doing a nice little tap medley which was anything but "sissy"... the person posting said that it was maybe one of the coolest things they had seen ... maybe I was not the target audience but it really wasn't a patch on Tom Holland's Lip Sync Battle, which shows unashamedly that male dancing, *even* in a corset, fishnets and wig, is unbelievably kick ass, and one could indeed say, anything but "sissy"!

Why? Because it offers the understanding of how to improve the local climate that affects our lives. Meaningful, life-changing local action, rather than lobbying global governance or drop in the ocean emissions reductions.
