In other news, Discourse, the free forum platform, is now joining the Fediverse.

Yep, Discourse forums will become compatible with Mastodon!

@ploum I was wondering why hardly anyone was talking about XMPP when I discovered it the other week. Now I know. Google, man.

Eibriel

@ploum I remember when XMPP was slowly and painfully killed by Google, yep
I remember the feeling of frustration and uncertainty.

I just realize that I should have opened a Mastodon instance called #wayland when Elon Musk changed Twitter’s name.

So I could tell everyone : "Time to migrate from X to Wayland!"

I’m sure at least a dozen of people would have got the joke.

EDIT: actually, somebody did it: see @compositor ! Awesome ! Thanks @mo for the info.

The Pale Blue Dot

"Consider again that dot. That's here. That's home. That's us. On it everyone you love, everyone you know".

Carl Sagan lecturing about the Fediverse in 1994.

Bubbles of different size and colors, each representing different social networks. Facebook is the biggest (3 billion monthly active users), followed by Youtube (2.5 billions) and Instagram (2 billions).

The Fediverse is a very small blue dot (1.5 million)

Faithful representation: Facebook is a gas giant

DELETED

@ploum the only problem is the fedverse isn’t ready for billions of people. The prophecy as fold told will lead to unprecedented new problems the dev team failed to address. The criminal organization slowly spreading to the masses while smaller groups disappear. Actions of the mods and administrators will be tested, civil war inside the fediverse communities. When it’s all over the once great fediverse communities will become islands of other islands and one day a nation formed by the fediverse.

DELETED

@ploum pourrait-on parler de contamination passive pour l'entourage ?

Jazzwise

@ploum

@ploum really interesting idea.. wouldn’t be opposed to it myself

I really enjoyed this article - thanks.

I also sometimes feel like there's a different world out there that I want no part of.

Man, I run against this so often with technology. If it were up to me, I'd totally be picking and staying, but there's a bunch of sites I hate to use that I'm required to use for uni. Really frustrating. :P

Google is trying to put the web in a cage in the same way they put your devices in a cage (Android, ChromeOS).

There’s one really easy, simple and efficient way to fight them: uninstall Chrome/Chromium, use #firefox

Do it. Now.

– But I prefer Chrome because of

If you are not ready to sacrifice a little comfort (so little, Firefox is great) to save the web, then you don’t deserve a free web anyway. You are part of those killing it.

Remove Chrome. Install Firefox.

(with adblockers)

@ploum @solderpunk after 4 years I still cannot click on gemini links in pleroma to open them in lagrange :-/ I really thought this would happen faster.

Each new generation on the web needs to learn that there’s no such thing as a permanent web identity on a commercial web service.

The only long-term solution to maintain your identity is:
1. your own domain name
2. Your own website/blog
3. Several backups

Everything else is temporary. Your accounts on myspace, facebook, medium, twitter, google plus, youtube, tiktok, mastodon will one day disappear or become useless.

You don’t have a "community" on those websites. Only ephemeral discussions.

100 Mastodon myths:

1. Mastodon is hard.

FALSE. It’s a "soft"ware. Not hardware.

2. You have to use Linux to post on Mastodon.

FALSE. FreeBSD and OpenBSD are also supported.

3. You need to learn to use the Vim editor before posting on Mastodon.

FALSE. There’s also an emacs plugin.

4. Mastodon is only for computer nerds.

FALSE. As you can see, we sometimes try to make jokes that everyone could understand.

@ploum I heard the Tribal Migrators from Mastodon made the western roman empire destabilize as they fled the Huns

@ploum ok but this business about having to choose a server is disconcerting and annoying.

Hi @mntmn , I’m very excited by the MNT Pocket (see ploum.net/the-computer-built-t to understand why).

Did you ever thought about an e-ink version similar to an Astrohaus Freewrite ? (which has the worst software one could imagine, see gemini://rawtext.club/~ploum/2
)

Keep up the good work
