How Meta could kill the Fediverse, a look at historical precedents. https://ploum.net/2023-06-23-how-to-kill-decentralised-networks.html At the end of this post, you will find many translations: French, Spanish, German, Italian, Turkish, Russian I just realize that I should have opened a Mastodon instance called #wayland when Elon Musk changed Twitter’s name. So I could tell everyone : "Time to migrate from X to Wayland!" I’m sure at least a dozen of people would have got the joke. EDIT: actually, somebody did it: see @compositor ! Awesome ! Thanks @mo for the info.

@ploum let me introduce you wayland.social — the successor to x.com :blobcatbadumtss: The Pale Blue Dot "Consider again that dot. That's here. That's home. That's us. On it everyone you love, everyone you know". Carl Sagan lecturing about the Fediverse in 1994. (image found on Lemmy without any attribution)

@ploum the only problem is the fedverse isn’t ready for billions of people. The prophecy as fold told will lead to unprecedented new problems the dev team failed to address. The criminal organization slowly spreading to the masses while smaller groups disappear. Actions of the mods and administrators will be tested, civil war inside the fediverse communities. When it’s all over the once great fediverse communities will become islands of other islands and one day a nation formed by the fediverse. Are we splitting the Web? Maybe it’s time to choose your side.

@ploum I also sometimes feel like there's a different world out there that I want no part of. @ploum Google is trying to put the web in a cage in the same way they put your devices in a cage (Android, ChromeOS). There’s one really easy, simple and efficient way to fight them: uninstall Chrome/Chromium, use #firefox Do it. Now. – But I prefer Chrome because of… If you are not ready to sacrifice a little comfort (so little, Firefox is great) to save the web, then you don’t deserve a free web anyway. You are part of those killing it. Remove Chrome. Install Firefox. (with adblockers)

@ploum Firefox is jumping out of the frying pan into the fire; the Mozilla foundation is a scam. Vivaldi browser might be worth trying, but I haven't bothered yet.

Further read: why Gemini is essential: Gemini, le protocole du slow web (FR) : @ploum @solderpunk after 4 years I still cannot click on gemini links in pleroma to open them in lagrange :-/ I really thought this would happen faster.

@ploum Slightly marketting focused blog but https://howtomarketagame.com/2021/11/01/dont-build-your-castle-in-other-peoples-kingdoms/ conveys the same point. 100 Mastodon myths: 1. Mastodon is hard. FALSE. It’s a "soft"ware. Not hardware. 2. You have to use Linux to post on Mastodon. FALSE. FreeBSD and OpenBSD are also supported. 3. You need to learn to use the Vim editor before posting on Mastodon. FALSE. There’s also an emacs plugin. 4. Mastodon is only for computer nerds. FALSE. As you can see, we sometimes try to make jokes that everyone could understand.

@ploum ok but this business about having to choose a server is disconcerting and annoying. Hi @mntmn , I’m very excited by the MNT Pocket (see https://ploum.net/the-computer-built-to-last-50-years/ to understand why). Did you ever thought about an e-ink version similar to an Astrohaus Freewrite ? (which has the worst software one could imagine, see gemini://rawtext.club/~ploum/2021-10-07.gmi Keep up the good work 12

@ploum I was wondering why hardly anyone was talking about XMPP when I discovered it the other week. Now I know. Google, man.
@ploum I remember when XMPP was slowly and painfully killed by Google, yep
I remember the feeling of frustration and uncertainty.
