updated the old bio, in case it wasn't clear I'm Canadian

I'm sorry I didn't make that clearer 💅

I love the #fediverse because I can call you weird without getting banned

In fact, I encourage you to be weird!

The fedi is a place for weirdos, misfits, and all sorts of interesting people who don't quite fit in anywhere else

It's people like you that make the fedi so magical, to a degree that Meta feels obligated to participate or be left behind

Makes you think, eh

@dansup To be honest, 'weird' is one label I don't mind being taken away from me 😁 (in the current-happenings context, at least).

But I get what you mean. It's nice to see all the unique things people are up to here, and I feel like this place is better about letting me stumble into them than most. I learned a lot since joining here and I think it's made me a happier person offline in some ways.

I'm listening

@dansup
We are all weird here.(Alice in the wonderland).

oldfartjmb says eh?

@dansup

Thank you. I needed to read that. Recently I've run into some very nasty vicious people who want to define acceptable to be only precisely what they think.

Why be racist, sexist, homophobic, or transphobic when you could just be quiet?

@dansup my headcannon it’s that they are just jealous: if they can’t have it, like petty children, no one can

meriksson

@dansup Insecurity does not work that way, sadly.

I know that there are a few people who dislike me for whatever reasons, and I'm okay with that

But when I enter another fedi project chat, I make it clear that I don't want to make anyone uncomfortable with my presence, and that we can chat via Issues if the maintainer prefers

Respect means a lot to me and it goes both ways!

I joined another fediverse projects chat and after introducing myself said the following:

"Also, do let me know if my presence here is disruptive and you'd rather interact via Github Issues, I don't want to make anyone uncomfortable and understand if that is what you prefer, in that case I'll head out and we can discuss via Issues!"

@dansup

Very nice that you take the high road!!!

Feyter

@dansup I don't really get why people don't like you on the level that it makes them uncomfortable to be in a chat group with you.

I feel like @Gargron also sometimes get some unjustified level of dislike.

I respect both of you for the things you do. I hope you don't take it too personal if some people dislike you. Maybe that is just unavoidable once you are interacting with a certain number of people. You can't make everyone happy.

@pixelfed Also do feel free to suggest more improvements or call me out on specific problems and I will do my best to prioritize and accommodate your feedback and requests granted they are reasonable and actionable!

As developers, it’s our responsibility to take a proactive approach to safety and moderation, and while I don’t have the resources that some other projects do, I have dropped the ball in this regard so I’m focused on improving this in Pixelfed and would love your feedback!

@dansup @pixelfed only two words: PUSH NOTIFICATIONS

Qazm

@dansup Do you have documentation on the details of comment control yet? Is it only automatic-allow for specific groups or does it support an interactive mode where e.g. the comment can be submitted, but interactive approval is required (according to some filter)?

Something that I think would help *a lot* with connections to less moderated huge instances would be to set a first-comment(s) approval mode for them: If someone comments/replies from such an instance, those comments are collected and can be allowed/rejected by moderators in a view that shows their overall comment history. Plus a button to approve the commenter in general.
This could also be combined with a word/phrase filter to require manual approval, with the same option to exempt accounts.

I'm aware this would need a lot of UI, also to communicate that a made comment is 'pending approval' or something like that, but it could fix the 'whack a mole' problem of purely reactive moderation when connecting to large instances as a small instance.

@dansup @pixelfed

Do take care of your own welfare. You deserve safety too.

If users have requests for improvements they can present them quietly and patiently.

@dansup @pixelfed Any plans on when the #pixelfed #ios #app should come to the #AppStore and not only beeing available through #Testflight?

dansup

Wrapping up a few essential new features and updates as part of the new @pixelfed Moderation Update

Let's get this shipped ASAP!

Pixelfed admin dashboard with two new settings:

Authorized Fetch Mode
Strictly enforce domain restrictions by enabling Authorized
Fetch mode.

@pixelfed Those features all look amazing! Can't wait!

@pixelfed this presentation looks quite cool! How was this called & how did you create it?

Pixelfed + Comment Controls

This isn’t a new feature, our current implementation is binary (enable/disable comments)

The new comment controls will be released in the next app build due out later today 🚀

Spam is much more noticeable on Pixelfed, as they say, a picture is worth a thousand words.

This is why @pixelfed has the best in-class detection and mitigation, and the tech we use isn't new or fancy!

If you are interested in collaborating on a fediverse related resource or service using one of these domains, and you would be willing to be a project manager, do get in touch!

We can make it a community affair, and encourage contributions from across the fediverse!

Le colonel

@dansup use activitypub.guide to show a documentation on how to use the activitypub protocol easily and implement it in various languages :)

dansup

I registered a bunch of domains for ActivityPub back in the day, and want to put them to good use one day.

activitypub.bio
activitypub.group
activitypub.guide
activitypub.info
activitypub.io
activitypub.network
activitypub.social

I'm not interested in selling, but may consider transferring to an established and trusted entity, otherwise I'm down for using them in various ways for community oriented resources, services and utilities. 😎

@dansup "activitypub (.)network" would be a great lemmy server!

Everyone deserves to feel safe and respected online.

That's why we're introducing new comment controls to Pixelfed next month.

This new safety feature puts you in charge of your interactions, creating a safer and more welcoming space for everyone.

@pixelfed where would i find the concept documented?

Or at least a pointer to the github issues?

Johannes Ernst

@pixelfed Does this also apply recursively to comments of comments, or ...?

dansup

The internet can be homophobic.

The internet can be racist.

Most fediverse developers have privilege.

We have a responsibility to use that privilege to build a better, more inclusive online space.

Let's start listening to marginalized voices, amplify their experiences, and work together to create a Fediverse where everyone feels safe and welcome.

@dansup The internet can be anything like people can… everything starts with education, knowledge and an ethical framework…

@dansup The only phobia I have is covid phobia. Gender preferences shouldn't scare anyone. On the pickleball court yesterday a man asked if another gentleman could join the gay trio and people got all pissy about it. People are evil. It's childish.

Working on some federation bug fixes for account migrations and groups, as well as a new mobile app build!

We’re writing a FEP for our federated Comment Controls feature too!

#pixelfed

Григорий Клюшников

Are your comment controls per-post or per-account?

Phillip Caño

@dansup Will this new mobile app build have the dark mode now?

dansup

ICYMI: Pixelfed supports server blocklist import/exporting, similar to Mastodon.

We even wrote a simple tool to convert Mastodon blocklists to Pixelfed format and vice versa!
