 The internet can be homophobic. The internet can be racist. Most fediverse developers have privilege. We have a responsibility to use that privilege to build a better, more inclusive online space.  @Judeet88@universeodon.com @dansup@mastodon.social  I've seen a Black-identified account recently mention a high level of racist posts in their timeline, but I couldn't see it. Recently I started using the option on some posts to message only the account mentioned (when it's something sensitive like "hey, you might want to use alt-text"). I only just realized that's what's happening: bad actors are using this feature for various types of harassment. Something you folks might want to think about. @Gargron @jawarajabbi @Gargron Yeah that is concerning, we at @pixelfed are working on Comment Controls, and I know that is something Mastodon is working on too. As developers, we can't ignore threats like these, and while I understand some projects may not have the resources to implement this as fast as the community would like, it's crucial to understand the constraints in the protocol that can prevent implementations like this, unless all software is on board. I'm organizing a task force!

I'm not sure that would he the most constructive reply if that was all you said. It would have the effect of shutting down the conversation, meanwhile the person would still be getting bigoted replies and might feel silenced. Those from the USA need to stop using America as the name of the country. It's quite annoying and racist. It has about the same glow as using the N-word, it is that bad!. Because America has around 50 sovereign countries, not just one @johnmastodone @dansup I was mocked lots of times for saying that America is a continent, or for asking what country of America they talk about, or for using Usonian as a demonym. So I 100% agree with you.   @dansup LGBT friendly cities can be transphobic. Safe spaces can be gatekeepy. Safe spaces can be judgemental against wearing masks indoors. Protect the vunerables in our society.   @dansup The only phobia I have is covid phobia. Gender preferences shouldn't scare anyone. On the pickleball court yesterday a man asked if another gentleman could join the gay trio and people got all pissy about it. People are evil. It's childish. |
