I have a few friends that can speak and write Cree and I've been pitching to them an idea of recording short videos about different Cree words and phrases to help teach future generations, on @pixelfed ofc

I know a few words, but they can have full on discussions in it, and the language is dying, I'd love to do my part to help spread it around

@dansup @pixelfed Does Pixelfed handle video well? (Not hating. I don't know!)

Related: is there support for CDNs like CloudFlare Stream?

Toran Shaw

@dansup @pixelfed that's a good idea, especially for indigenous languages.

On Tiktok, for example, I follow an account where she does a Scots (language) word of the day.

EarthMomma

@dansup

I hold a smattering of the original Chumash language and carry a whole bunch of their songs. Which of course means nothing.

dansup

I'm eligible to apply for an Indian Status card due to my first nation heritage, but tbh there is a whole stigma around that and also "I'm not native looking enough"

I rarely mention this or my sexuality because I know I have a lot of privilege and while these labels don't define me, I struggle to balance them in the context of using them as status symbols.

I'm not ashamed of who I am anymore, I don't need a card to validate it, and I will learn to be comfortable sharing more about my culture

@dansup

I am part indigenous, too — from my father's mother's side of the family.

I also don't look it.

@dansup
Honestly, you are my favourite thing about pixelfed.

It has been inspiring to read the parts of your story that you have shared and to see this small part of your expression of all of that in pixelfed. Thank you for that.

I know there are lots of reasons for and against the status card.

All I want to say is your Nation needs your voice and as one who stands on the settler side of Treaty, we need accountability.

Status is not the onlyway to achieve that.

look like @minds joined, I wonder if they are implementing ActivityPub support?

Cameron

@dansup @minds their twitter account has more red flags than the bunting at a UK royal coronation party.

gavi

@minds @dansup I hope not. They are populated by the worst of the worst kind of people.

This is news to me #pixelfed

(ps: this isn't true)

@dansup

Yes, wouldn't that be nice. But this is, and works quite well so commercial operations can include monetization for content creators in the #Fediverse - as it should be

The new home feed does border on the algorithmic side, but you will have full control over that, and we'll make it super transparent, the classic chronological feed will remain the default!

Cameron

@dansup the word "algorithm" has become a bit of a bogeyman on the fediverse. There's nothing wrong with helping users see content that may be relevant to them, as long as they have control over it and it doesn't involve shady data collection practices.

I see similar stuff with "AI", sure the modern incarnation of AI is legally and morally questionable, but basic content analysis (e.g. spam filters) that has been around for decades seems to be getting lumped in with it now.

</grumpyOldManRant>

Ultrasquid

@dansup maybe an unpopular opinion here but I really like this. Its really hard to find accounts to follow on the fediverse right now, cause unless you're really into politics there isn't much of a way to find others with similar interests.

Adrian Morales

@dansup I don't like how the Discover tab works in the android app. It's a never-ending column of thumbnails that you need to tap on before you get to view the actual image with all the icons and stuff. Why?

dansup

Refactoring the home timeline API to support hashtag follows, and reblogs in @pixelfed is nearly finished and will be rolling out later this week to our web UI and mobile apps!

We're also working on the ability to limit these new types of feed posts (per account) so you can better curate your experience 😎

SamSpudd

@dansup @pixelfed Nice, reblogs are definitely gonna be helpful on a smaller instance like mine. Are stories still being included in an upcoming mobile app update (iOS), or not in the near future?

dansup

I'm going to try and squeeze in #PubKit development when I can

This is a fundamental service for ActivityPub, and while I understand my focus is @pixelfed, there are few people who have the knowledge and skills to be able to build something like this

Sometimes you gotta sacrifice for the greater good, and @pixelfed is mature enough for me to be able to do that

Also I can't wait to setup this on my activitypub.io domain and finally put it to use!

dansup

@pixelfed Also you may notice I renamed one of the services

I was contacted by someone who is building a project that used that name, and they built their brand around it and were ready to rename it but I felt so bad about that and renamed my feature.

Their service is technically a competitor to #PubKit but that doesn't really mean much when you consider the context - open source ActivityPub dev tools.

Can't stress enough how competition isn't a word in our vocab, collab is, and it's so magic

dansup

I've decided to go with neither of the two app logo options I asked you to vote on in [1]

Y'all made several good points, and those two options will be available to use but I decided to go with an app icon that is simple and not similar to IG's icon as the default.

Thanks for all the feedback!

It's not an easy job as an open source developer, especially when your project grows to be so popular

We're human too, and sometimes we all can take for granted the bigger picture in how we treat each other.

Emotions make us human but so does compassion, humility, and learning how to admit your wrong.

I'm not saying to disregard them, but maybe collectively we can work towards a more humane and understanding federated future by encouraging a more open dialogue between devs and users

wdyt?

dansup

I still remember when I first joined Masto in 2016 (and the IRC chan)

I kept accidentally spelling it Mastadon and when I discovered the domain was available I rushed to private message Gargron and suggest he register it

Two years later, I rediscovered Mastodon and it was much bigger, and I'll never forget how supportive he was of @pixelfed from day 1 and to this day

mastodon.social/@Gargron/10130

He really made an impact on me and I'm still his and Mastodons biggest fan ❤️

dansup

I've said it countless times before, if you're working on an #activityPub project and would like more visibility, DM me!

I know how lucky I was, and how hard it is to get noticed now, we all started from nothing and I get that

People over profits is what makes the #fediverse so special ❤️

@dansup I've built fediseer (fediseer.com/) and explained what it is here: dbzer0.com/blog/overseer-a-fed

Could use some more people knowing about and integrating with it. I even built a python SDK for it github.com/db0/pythonseer

Would research, promotion, and/or public initiatives count?

@dansup Until the people own the infrastructure and the revenue from the platforms the people will always remain the product.

I don't even know if my toots are getting out and rarely visit Mastodon because I don't understand the interface.

If advertisers had the user SELECT adverts via OPT-IN parameters so they get adverts they NEED instead of what the advertiser is trying to sell it would be better. A second feature that would be great is if advertisers were to have their adverts rated and if they rating goes negative the advert is no longer shown to anyone. All of a sudden adverts would have CONTENT that people upvote and are prepared to see. Sort of like what YT does with their DIY videos except with adverts and the PEOPLE earn the advertising revenue.

I hope someone with the power to speak to the correct people sees this.

My view on Threads, IG and Meta joining the fediverse has evolved as I started to realize that the animosity between IG and @pixelfed may just be in my head.

My past actions of overly dramaticized posts about IG blocking our hashtag and the filter renaming thing were due to my own interpretation of intimidation, when really there could be technical/logical explanations that prove otherwise.

I will give them the benefit of the doubt, if not for me, for the fediverse, and Pixelfed users/admins.

@pixelfed Obviously everyone can make their own judgements, but I say this as the Pixelfed developer.

I will continue working on user-level blocks so users can opt to block threads if their admin doesn't!

Please don't use my opinion over your own judgement or your users, my job is to empower admins and users with tools to make the choice themselves!

Danie van der Merwe

@dansup @pixelfed I would not like to see instance owners just deciding on behalf of their users. Some users may want to connect with friends and family there, and others not. Each should be able to decide and exercise that choice - a bit like a democracy. If I don't follow any Threads accounts, how do they harm, my feed? What I post is public as we don't have walled pay-gardens, and I'm sure they can access it already if they wish.

Erlend Sogge Heggen

@dansup @pixelfed in light of this, maybe ‘Login with Instagram’ merits another look? It makes the onboarding experience for IG converts considerably easier.

Like it's taken me years to get good at frontend dev, backend dev, project management, marketing, user support and also realizing how I can use my growing following to benefit other people and projects

And now it's all coming together and I couldn't be happier 😁

Building @pixelfed and everything else is a dream I've had for so many years and now I'm just in awe of the fact I'm actually doing this.

Never stop believing in yourself ❤️

Sneak peek at the upcoming blog post 👀

Gosh I'm having so much fun with this, I love marketing Pixelfed and spent years reading HN and it's wild that I'm now writing blog posts that I used to find so interesting (still do, but I rarely browse HN now)

Tueddelmors :ubuntu:

@dansup I love all the good vibes you are spreading with your work. It takes its time, but things are growing steadily! If I had one question it would be: Why the IG references in the looks and UI? Of course there is no need to invent the wheel for everything, but diffenrent colour schemes for example would be simple one and it would bring more identity. Keep up the good work!

@dansup This is great and what you're doing is going to help people embrace the Fediverse easier. I wonder if @Gargron is taking cues from this for Mastodon.

dansup

I had a blast with that last blog post, so I'm writing another one that will be up shortly 😎

dansup

Naive bayes isn't exactly exciting, I had to make it dramatic to make it interesting, this comment isn't wrong though!

dansup

I posted the blog post to HN, I wonder what they will think 😅

dansup

I had a lot of fun explaining Autospam, and how sometimes the "old, boring, resilient" methods and technology can endure the test of time and remain a good option 😎
