EDIT: It's back! https://fedidb.org/current-events/anti-meta-fedi-pact yes I'm re-adding #fediPact to https://fedidb.org i hope @vantablack will forgive me ๐ @dansup @vantablack Thanks - just what I've been looking for. Now I just have to find a new instance and transfer. Which will give me something to do over Christmas. Maybe avoid some washing up or something.๐ https://Pixelfed.social has blocked threads.net You can optionally unblock threads by navigating to Settings -> Privacy -> Blocked Domains

@dansup That seems like a great solution! ๐ฎ I personally don't want it blocked, obviously not because I like or trust meta (although I do think the e.e.e fears aren't realistic, the fediverse is well established and no matter how much they extend, few here will switch to meta if they cut the federation later), but because it might be a way to talk with some acquittances that only use their platform (which is literally everyone I have contact irl, nobody I know is in the fediverse). @dansup A very good Decision to block treads.net by default, in my humble Opinion at least. ๐ ๐ https://Pixelfed.art has blocked threads.net You can optionally unblock threads by navigating to Settings -> Privacy -> Blocked Domains @dansup I have no dog in this federation fight, but my thought is: the nomenclature on this feels awkward. Purely as UX. Just as a normal user, if I wanted to follow a Threads user, I'm not sure my initial thought would be to unblock. That's the inverse of following, which sounds counterintuitive. I mean I would know what to do here, but I also host my own servers. Would John Q. Public know how to follow his buddy on another service? ๐คทโโ๏ธ Maybe the question doesn't matter. deploying the www.threads.net user domain block on pixelfed.social You can unblock it by navigating to Settings -> Privacy -> Blocked Domains ๐ @dansup Can you explain how it works ? I totally messed up with how I handled the Threads federation with my pixelfed instances I'm sorry, and I appreciate all the negative feedback. You helped me realize I was wrong and I've been working hard to ship a solution that I think is in the best interests of pixelfed.social + .art users Pixelfed wouldn't exist without you people, and all your valid criticisms and feedback You have a huge impact, please remember that. Also remember to hold me accountable Keep it coming โค๏ธ

@dansup I think this is a good solution -- default to blocking Threads but let individual Pixelfed users decide if they want to allow it. @dansup this is pure gold, it shows that you are a humble and wise man that really care about this comunity and your apps users. Thank you, for all the effort that you put into the Fediverse. We really appreciate it. Respect.

@dansup Not happy. I will unblock it for my account as soon as that feature is available. Could you please point me at the PR so I can follow it? @dansup I donโt understand this. I see on Threads ordinary people doing ordinary things. Perhaps youโd like to explain what it is you are worried about? @dansup Thank you! You've made the right decision for the community. Opt-in is the way it should be from the start. โจ Pixelfed User Domain Blocks are 97% complete! We have almost everything implemented, except hashtag following and reblogs which I can finish later today We are discussing implementing partial Signed Fetch validation to enforce domain blocks at the AP level for accounts with domain blocks (nobody does this yet ๐ )

@dansup it looks great, there is one feedback if you don't mind. Had our annual property inspection and my partners christmas party this past weekend, didn't get much coding done besides User Domain Blocks. Hope to get that and the new mobile app build out tonight ๐ @dansup Any updated timeline for the iOS app to leave beta? I thought a while ago you were thinking you were close but Iโm assuming plans changed? Auto Alt-Text and Caption Translations are popular requests for the @pixelfed app The only way I'm comfortable implementing these are only if it can be on device, sending media or captions to an API is unacceptable for privacy reasons That being said, I am making progress on this, though its limited to a few languages now, I look forward to shipping and expanding support for other langs omg am i getting old > irc over discord don't laugh, it will happen to you if it hasn't already Preferring irc over discord is a matter of wisdom, this may correlate with age but not necessarily. I miss irc so much, just stumbled upon my old bot I used to run a few ircds, seems like a lifetime ago, maybe I should... /KLINE 5eva *@discord.com :moved2irc @dansup the thought is so damn tempting, esp. considering how hard Discord is pushing to upgrade people to a paid tier. But losing custom emojis, the gif picker, voice channels and all the other things that actually makes Discord great - urgh.. Cabal is the spiritual successor to irc , it is rock solid on the cmd line and ready to go, come say hi on default ๐

Ngl, a few days ago I was considering giving up on @pixelfed Seeing all the hate and negativity regarding my pf.soc Threads announcement really hit hard Now I'm more focused than ever on our mission, and building better privacy and safety tools to empower users Mountains of achievement rise from the valleys of hardship

@dansup @pixelfed I am new to fedi but was an instagram enjoyer until I realized how sick it made me. I am excited to see pixelfed take off and I think what can be different this time around is we can educate lay people about how to be technologically anticapitalist with FLOSS. if people don't see the "real-world value" of the infrastructure available to them, they aren't gonna know what they're missing. i think the info just needs to be condensed and spread. I'm working on a how to guide thing Well I love it. Thank you because this is what federation is all about. Everyone else can block the domain on a user level or find/make a Thread-less instance if they donโt like it. @dansup @pixelfed I think anyone whos been watching you here can tell you care immensely about this whole space and you make decisions and change them based on what you currently believe is the best path of action. I have seen some people post about their disappointment that you changed course about the fedipact, but I think this is mostly just about finding the right balance of communication. Also the division of pixelfed as a project and pixelfed.social can get a bit confusing at times. Ironically, the most complicated part of domain blocks is the Domain Block settings page where you can view, add, and remove blocks I spent a few hours building this in a way that is compatible with the MastoAPI and look forward to shipping this later this weekend โจ The ironic part is that you'd think it would be more complicated to handle the block logic across the backend, but that is simple The domain block settings page is more complex because of pagination, search and import/export functionality. I may skip import/export for now so I can ship basic domain block support sooner. Thanks for following along, and more importantly, thank you for helping me prioritize this essential safety feature. โจ Pixelfed + User Domain Blocks You will soon have the ability as a :pixelfed: member, to block specific domains, similar to Mastodon. This will block content and interactions from the domains you choose. Shipping soon ๐

@dansup It seems to me that you're making the right decision about federating with Threads: give them a chance, and give tools to Pixelfed's users to control interaction. Maybe your communication could have been better, but you certainly don't deserve any abuse for that. @dansup Hi I see no reason for you to apologise to anyone. You created Pixelfed and have run Pixelfed.social very well from my perspective. Itโs no doubt a controversial topic and people on both sides of the debate feel strongly in their position. Canโt argue against democracy (mostly!) but Iโm content with your decisions/explanations so far. If after a discussion those who dislike/cannot accept the decision of the community can choose to move to another instance. The beauty of the Fediverse! |
