I have thought about switching to Linux again and again...

But looking from the outside it seems like Linux users have Linux as a hobby...

But I don't have the time or energy to dive into another hobby...

Especially one that would (at least initially?) impair my other hobbies that are dependent on certain software... And my actual work (because I need my computer for my teaching job).

So, yeah. What you write is highly appreciated.

And it shows again: Just because someone is good at something, they aren't necessarily a good teacher for it.

I didn't think of this earlier but a comment mentioned you could also move the .cache or at least the .cache/kwin/qmlcache into a tmpfs, I have not extensively tested this so I can't say if there are any unintended side effects

@BrodieOnLinux I don't think it would be possible to cheaply prove that there are undesirable side effects. If one big application is using the .cache directory to store data the user really needs across reboots, then you personally might not use that application and be hurt by its data loss, but somebody else could lose one computer boot's worth of data that way - which could be quite a lot.

заметка себе на будущее

если диск с luks не расшифровывается ничем, выдавая разные ошибки в разных прогах, нужно использовать такую замечательную команду: # cryptsetup repair /dev/раздел

надеюсь, никому кроме меня не понадобится её использовать

Why would you want to do this?

Enabling Tor federation means that there are more instances available to federate when creating an instance anonymously through the darknet. This makes the fediverse significantly more accessible, especially for those in countries with more restrictive local laws regarding speech.

@eevee I wanted to give the ol' "let's see if the Linux desktop experience is viable for me" another try on the weekend and immediately failed at "every window is flickering" among other issues, precisely because the nvidia driver is apparently very broken with Wayland and the only workaround is going back to X, which... Plasma 6 dropped. Oh well, maybe in another year.

Your experience here isn't that much worse than the last few times I've (deliberately) tried it, yet KDE has the 2nd best support for it after GNOME last I checked

(and before anyone jumps in, yes, some attempts were on nvidia, but most recently was with an amd card, and I've even tried with integrated graphics on an entirely different machine - all have had their problems)

Like, graphics stuff is hard, let alone redesigning a new protocol from ground up and trying to manage migration, backwards compat via xwayland, proprietary driver blobs...I get that

Still, makes me wonder where on earth all the claims it's basically ready to be pushed as default everywhere keep coming from - I've never had any hardware combination that's played nice with it and even if you get it stable, there's then plenty of software that even if they have wayland support or can be run in xwayland still have major UX issues
