I was inspired by @nev to bring my @RosesAreRedBot to the fediverse (it's been dead/dormant on twitter for years)

@darius interesting! i definitely like that the sidebar can be hidden, but i'm not sure about the reflow, also not sure about putting even more items in it! in addition, you don't have log-in/sign-in buttons anymore in mobile view, which i think might be an issue @darius gosh, this is fantastic. Any advice for someone interested in spinning up a hometown for ~15-20 users? I actually really love the new filter system in Mastodon v4 ... the option to basically generate my own CWs is great. Instant oulipo Uh except for the word "Filtered" whoops Friend Camp is now running on Hometown v1.1.0 / Mastodon v4.0.2!!! Check out our sweet, statically-rendered About page:
[DATA EXPUNGED]
Good article, but the key issue of social structure is missing: democratic ownership, governance, operations. Nice to look at your guide again: https://runyourown.social/ This, too: https://files.frameshiftconsulting.com/books/cocguide.pdf The article didn't start off well at all, I at first thought. I almost didn't even get to the third paragraph before I stopped reading - just another misinformed journalist penning an article schilling the mastodon brand trying to get people to think there's even such a thing as a 'mastodon network' - there isn't. But then it began to open up and bloom. Really glad I didn't give up in that second paragraph. A little heavy on tech in the middle for lay persons, but a great article. ⛵ Okay, finally did the last task for the new #Hometown release: improving the mobile layout. It's not perfect, but I got rid of the giant logo header bar at the top, and moved the account and post buttons into the sidebar. I still don't love this layout, but I think it's an improvement. Before/after attached. Next up, I install it on Friend Camp and run it for a few days. Then... release!!! You can track the release here: https://github.com/orgs/hometown-fork/projects/2/views/1

@darius wait, you're gonna keep that sidebar? :-( My biggest hope was that you'd remove it for good @darius I know I’m a lone voice in the replies, but I like the 4.0.2 mobile layout as is. Any option to retain it? To be honest, these UI changes seem very opinionated, and unnecessary (or not minimal for a minimal fork), for those tuning in for big features like local only posts. Anyway, that’s just my opinion. I know you have to make calls like these.

Finally added a #Hometown feature I have wanted for a long time. Media in a timeline that lacks alt text now has a little warning icon in the lower left (shown here with mouseover text). This is a quick signal to help people (like me) who do not boost media without alt text. It also makes images that don't have alt text... slightly uglier heheheh :AngelDevil:

@darius I really, really like this. I was thinking along the same lines, so I could avoid boosting images without descriptions. Finally had time to sit down and bang out a bunch of the work for the new #Hometown release. As usual you can check out everything I am working on, related discussions, and the status of the work: @darius Looking forward to migrating my instance over to this! Thank you so much for all the work that you do to maintain Hometown. ♥️ This question has been shared enough that it seems to be answered with an implicit "no". I'm editing the post instead of deleting as a way to keep the original post up without also incurring a bunch more shares and weird replies, but I'll delete if I have to.

- Encyclopedia Britannica 13th Edition Volumes 23-24 Refec to Shutt The 9th edition of the Encyclopædia Britannica marks the scholarly apex of a cherished publication it is not unlike the 3rd edition of the Joy of Cooking which keeps to Rombauer original vision and ... wait why are you running?! If you're tired of the day's particular discourse, at least on the Mastodon web client (mobile or desktop), press the settings button in the upper right of your home timeline and turn off boosts globally. Turn it back on later when the discourse storm has passed. What I've learned from having boosts off is that most of discourse is passed on via boosts. The people I follow directly will post about it some, but usually not enough to take over the timeline. (Muting words is a good option too.)

@darius @thelaughingmuse Excellent advice. One thing I love about Mona is I can long-press a single word in a post and be given the option of muting that word without having to go through my settings page. Hella convenient. 👍

Sometimes my approach to a technical problem is "do stuff and see if it works" and other times it's "think about the problem for 1 to 3 years before making any moves" and I wish I knew how to articulate when to do which one. Usually the "think for 3 years" thing is what I end up doing when it's a socio-technical feature with a strong possibility of causing harm if I get it wrong

@darius I am so often a champion of “you can’t learn if you don’t ship” and “build safety, then experiment constantly” approaches, which really start to fall apart when your product is basically a giant psychometric challenge trial (with no IRB, of course) on the global population. But I still feel like “stop moving because moving might break something” is just as bad when the stakes are high as when they’re not. Constantly wondering how to resolve this tension. If there's a big cost if it goes wrong - wait! If the time has come to get cracking on something, then dive in! Really useful legal guide from the folks at the EFF for people running fediverse servers: https://www.eff.org/deeplinks/2022/12/user-generated-content-and-fediverse-legal-primer (disclosure: I advised them on this work a bit)

@darius @ultrasaurus I found this very helpful thread: https://nitter.net/rahaeli/status/1593819064161665024 Which led me to this CC-licensed DMCA Policy: https://www.dreamwidth.org/legal/dmca Which I then adapted for my Mastodon instance quakers.social. I made a subdomain for meta stuff like this, and hosted my policy at https://meta.quakers.social/dmca-policy. (And I signed up as a DMCA Registered Agent.) You can sell things on the fediverse if you want. I buy stuff I learn about here all the time, usually directly from creators. If you sell things in a way that is annoying to the users of this server, as an admin it's my duty to block you on behalf of the users on this server. If your server is full of people selling things in a way that is annoying, I'll block the whole server on behalf of mine.

@darius What qualifies as "annoying" in your book? I know some folks who are allergic to any kind of self-promotion in their social spaces. I don't get it, but some folks are like that. But I'd (naively) expect that "just don't follow those accounts" ought to mostly cover it. Without widely-used reflectors, someone pulling a Canter and Siegel here seems...improbable. @darius IANAL IANYL ATINLA; the approach some friends decided upon for their policy was “[X] is not intended to be a marketplace; Certain transactions as prohibited by applicable US & [local] law are forbidden & will result in account permanent suspension”. That way they could claim to be agnostic of any sales happening while avoiding liability under various US laws covering narcotics, alcohol, tobacco, firearms, finance instruments, etc Adding this from something I wrote in a reply elsewhere: We are fine with self promotion here on Friend Camp. There are a lot of indie artists here who promote their wares to live. Our tolerance for promotion is actually very high, especially *self* promotion! "Annoying" is whatever the 60 of us agree is annoying. That's what's nice about a small server: we can get reasonable consensus on a case by case basis without having to codify everything. Fourteen years, nine months. End of an era. Apparently you can't delete straight-up, you have to deactivate and wait 30 days and then it is deleted. And yes, I am deleting my account. Best of luck to whatever impersonator or spammer takes over the tinysubversions name. I refuse to dignify Twitter as a canonical namespace.

@darius I'm not sure I'm really tracking. I prefer to stay within my own server so I can more easily interact with their posts, and then click over to their server if I need to scroll back to see their earlier stuff. What we have now mostly works for me. Especially in the advanced web interface, where it loads in the third column. I have a working follow button and I can reply directly. Also: Do you have a rough idea of when HT will go to Mv4? @darius DARIUUUUUUUU 🥰🥰🥰 I saw a screenshot of someone sharing some of my work on here the other week and decided to finally migrate lol |
@darius https://github.com/hometown-fork/hometown invite people to join #mastodon at libera.chat as IRC/Matrix room. Is there an official room for hometown?
@darius Thank you! I've been waiting for this update to switch to Hometown. So excited!
@darius hello, I just discovered hometown, is a fantastic project imo, it fixes 99% of mastodon shortcomings. (1% is share with comment...) I would like to convert my regular instance to hometown, could you assist me? Is the process reversible? Many thanks ;-)
