Okay, #Hometown v1.1.1 is now released!

Massive release notes here:

github.com/hometown-fork/homet

Admins, please let me know if you run into trouble on the upgrade. This is a tricky one, mostly due to Mastodon v3 -> v4 stuff. You'll get a lot of mileage searching the Mastodon issues repo for production errors you run into on the upgrade.

I'll repeat what I said on the release notes: if your installation is customized in any way (sidekiq setup, etc) you NEED to be careful.

@darius On a whim I decided to migrate from mastodon 4.0.2 to hometown. Worked without a hitch! Great work! ⭐

@darius this looks fantastic, thank you so much! I'm thrilled we're getting blocklist import/export early.

@darius congrats on the release.

Would you recommend people that I could contract to move a glitch (v3 something) this shinny version of hometown?

PlasticJohnny

@darius What exactly is Hometown? I can't seem to find a summary page, merely updates!

@darius Would I need to keep anything particular in mind when I wanted to migrate from Mastodon 4.0.2 to this new Hometown release?

Darius Kazemi

@galaxis there is a migration guide here, and no it should not be tricky at all if you are currently on v4!

@darius Ah, great, thanks!

Have to admit I didn't check if the migration guide has already been updated before asking...

Now that #Hometown's new version is out, I want to promote this amazing guide by @mart0 that walks you through the process of creating a Hometown server from scratch.

The level of detail here is astounding. It only covers Hometown v1.0.8 but I see no reason you couldn't easily upgrade to v1.1.0 following the normal upgrade instructions at the end.

> This guide is meant for people who have little past experience with system administration or setting up their own web services. I tried to assume as little prior knowledge as possible.

It is truly useful if you are technically minded but not a sysadmin. Basically if you have messed around on the terminal a bit, the level of detail here should be enough to get going. You can check the "Who are you" section of the article for more.

@gabboman check this out. It might give you sone insights about mastodon's architecture for the thing you are building

iluXan 🤣

@darius @mart0 can confirm! worked well for me, despite 0 sysadmin experience in last 10+ years

@darius @mart0 I used this guide to set up a Mastodon+Hometown instance for friends and family and decrease centralization of the Fediverse!

Lutin Discret

@darius github.com/hometown-fork/homet invite people to join #mastodon at libera.chat as IRC/Matrix room. Is there an official room for hometown?

Anders Borch

@darius Thank you! I've been waiting for this update to switch to Hometown. So excited!

@darius hello, I just discovered hometown, is a fantastic project imo, it fixes 99% of mastodon shortcomings. (1% is share with comment...) I would like to convert my regular instance to hometown, could you assist me? Is the process reversible? Many thanks ;-)
