Okay, finally did the last task for the new #Hometown release: improving the mobile layout. It's not perfect, but I got rid of the giant logo header bar at the top, and moved the account and post buttons into the sidebar.

I still don't love this layout, but I think it's an improvement. Before/after attached.

Next up, I install it on Friend Camp and run it for a few days. Then... release!!!

You can track the release here: github.com/orgs/hometown-fork/

Screenshot of the Hometown home timeline on mobile, before improvements. The top ~8% of the screen is taken up by a logo and then a couple of buttons off to the side.
Screenshot of the Hometown home timeline on mobile after improvements. There is no longer a header taking up the top 8% of the mobile screen. All of the vertical space on the phone is used for content.

Oh right, also decided to turn the "hashtag" icon into a "search" icon... because that is where search lives.

The Mastodon sidebar but with the hashtag icon switched for a magnifying glass search icon.

@darius Great decision. I don’t understand why Mastodon went against that broadly accepted practice.

@darius how many of these are toggles that the admin can turn on or off vs things that are baked into the template as soon as you install Hometown?

@darius you love to see it. that hashtag-for-search-(because-really-you’re-searching-hashtags-not-text) icon is a great example of overthought ui

Darius Kazemi

@ja2ke that is a really good point. I hadn't even considered that because on many servers including my own you have full text search of a subset of posts, so it extra doesn't make sense

Ok I ended up with unexpected free time today so I went ahead and made the #Hometown mobile menu expand/retract with a button push.

Works in tablet layout too, though not quite so useful.

@darius the menu collapsing thing is such an improvement!

Nick

@darius Very glad for the menu collapse, thank you! Gonna check the thread for other features in a bit when I have some time.

@darius this is my number one pet peeve with the masto web ui, and now I wish @mastohost supported hometown

@darius wait, you're gonna keep that sidebar? :-( My biggest hope was that you'd remove it for good

Darius Kazemi

@bouncepaw I plan to but it is a lot of work and I can't get it in for this release

@darius I know I’m a lone voice in the replies, but I like the 4.0.2 mobile layout as is. Any option to retain it?

To be honest, these UI changes seem very opinionated, and unnecessary (or not minimal for a minimal fork), for those tuning in for big features like local only posts.

Anyway, that’s just my opinion. I know you have to make calls like these.

Mark

@darius Well I don’t mind the top banner the way it is. I like the vanilla UI on mobile. To be honest I’d probably make minimal UI changes in order to support main features. But I know you have calls you have to make on these things and you’re never going to please everyone. 😊
