Okay, #Hometown v1.1.0 is coming out tomorrow! There are so many changes (and I will explain them all in the release notes) but I think I am most happy with the tweaks to the Mastodon v4 mobile layout.

* Removed giant header
* Retractable right hand menu (click the top right hamburger icon)
* Reduced margins overall for a more compact layout

Attached pics: before, after, and after with retracted menu. Note you see a whole extra post in the 'after' screenshot due to all the removed elements.

The Mastodon v4 mobile interface, running a pastel Hometown theme.
Screenshot of the same content as the previous picture, but more information fits on the screen due to lack of extraneous UI stuff and whitespace.
The same screenshot of the new Hometown interface but the right-hand menu is retracted and there is room for the content of the posts to take up the entire width of the phone.

Also this means that everyone on a brand new post-Nov-1 server that runs Mastodon 4.0.2 has the option to move to Hometown for their software and get that sweet local-only posting and more :)

Or, uh, at least bug their admin or web host about it

@darius :da_la: I can't wait!! I had plans to migrate to Hometown back in October, but the Twitter situation then the release of Mastodon v4.0 put the kibosh on that. X)

Thank you *so much* for all your hard work! :da_cuddle:

lol I just did a word count on the release notes for Hometown v1.1.0 and it's 1,300 words long

Annika Backstrom

@darius so much for "bug fixes and performance improvements"

solipsistnation

@darius This is pretty tempting-- as an admin of a smaller host, having local-only messages is pretty appealing. (The world doesn't need to know when I'm working on the disk cache or whatever, right?)

Will you be updating the migration docs and so on as well? It looks pretty straightforward at least.

Darius Kazemi

@solipsistnation yup I will! It should be pretty simple to migrate. And it's designed for small servers of friends like yours, you have the exact right idea

jasmin

@darius nice, I’m really excited to install it tomorrow, can’t wait for all the nice changes! Thanks for your hard work! :blobheart:

Ru (Personal)

@darius Excite! Not many updates that are personally beneficial to me (last I checked 1+ week ago), but great to see those kind of features being pushed out. :loved_cat:

DELETED

@darius very much looking forward to seeing the updates, and thank you as well for this clearly worded post!

adam waldron-blain

@darius this might be reason enough to start a server, mastodon’s default paragraph spacing (and that in Metatext which I’m using rn) is a choice only open-source developers could love

Mark

@darius This may be a stupid question, but this is not the default colour scheme, right? (As in, you’re doing something custom in css for friend camp, right?)

Mark

@darius Is it possible to stick with the vanilla mastodon 4.0.2 theme?

Darius Kazemi

@mark yeah it has the normal 3 mastodon themes, plus two extra

Clairement crevée

@darius interesting! i definitely like that the sidebar can be hidden, but i'm not sure about the reflow, also not sure about putting even more items in it!

in addition, you don't have log-in/sign-in buttons anymore in mobile view, which i think might be an issue

Darius Kazemi

@Claire if users go to the about page they get those buttons in mobile but you're right I should make it clearer how to get there when signed out

Darius Kazemi

@Claire thanks for this, fixed on logged-out views now

@darius gosh, this is fantastic. Any advice for someone interested in spinning up a hometown for ~15-20 users?

Darius Kazemi

@nicoles Yes, on the technical end I recommend checking out this extremely comprehensive guide: n00q.net/articles/guide-mastod

On the "how do I maintain a small community" side there is always my runyourown.social

Nicole Aptekar

@darius Oh yeah! I apologize, totally spaced on your site. Super appreciate the tech link also :)
