I also made an easy-to-share PDF, Fediverse for Publishers. It gives a quick overview of what the fediverse is, why it matters for publishers and journalists, and an easy overview of the different ways to get started. Check it out, and feel free to share and use it.

Check it out here!

On Sep 12 the Applied Social Media Lab (where I work) is hosting “Beyond Discourse Dumpster Fires: Strategies and Tools for Better Online Civil Space" to explore new ideas for healthier and more satisfying online communication.

I'm particularly excited to hear from @zephoria!

RSVP here, online via Zoom or (limited) in-person tickets in Cambridge MA: brk.mn/discourse

There will also be a recording available afterwards, so those who do not use Zoom can still watch!

And Then Satan Said:

We are going to separate into breakout groups of five people, after 8 min. each group will present what they discussed in the main group.

@futurebird This has in my experience never produced any useful results. Not once. Ever.

@futurebird If I believed in Hell, it would include this. I enjoy the breakouts; it is the need to come back that stings.

trending on mastodon: sperm whales sleep vertically, which we didn’t have proof of until recently

@seachanger both are interesting, but i think i would rather think about whales napping

Robo-Bunny Jane

@seachanger do you have a link to the whales thing?

For @eggplantshow, we just published Part 3 of our deep dive miniseries about SLICE & DICE. We ask the game's designer, tann, exactly six (6) questions.

Thanks again @darius for joining us as series guest co-host!

oh wow they found place cells in zebrafish thetransmitter.org/spatial-cog

fish brains don't have any obvious _structural_ analogue of the mammalian hippocampus, but this suggests that the _functional_ analogue evolved very, very early in vertebrates; maybe even earlier than vertebrates (we know octopuses have excellent spatial memory, after all)

also they had to invent a robotic microscope that chases the fish larvae around, that's nifty in itself

Update on Superopinionated today, a repost of something I wrote for my old newsletter in late 2016...also if you're a newsletter subscriber, sorry for wandering away from that, I'm just back to blogging again I think.

As people come out of #xoxofest with, inevitably, some positive tests, I would like to reiterate as one of your Original Pandemic Aunties that *this is not your fault*.

Individuals in busted systems can only do so much for so long. Trying matters and/but so does giving yourself grace.

(Also there is a thread in the Slack for noting positive tests so folks can do light contact tracing, just fyi.)

Darius Kazemi

By the way, I recently made a big podcast series about sex testing, which I did not post on here at all oops. If you want to learn about the loooooooong history of policing women in sports (and how it's still happening today) listen to Tested! tested-podcast.com

I don’t want to brag, but I think I just made the most absolute dogshit cake that has ever been created. Pretty much everything that could go wrong did go wrong, from the cake sticking to the pan, to it breaking into pieces, to the “frosting” failing to ever get past liquid stage.

PS If you’re thinking “looks horrible but probably tastes good,” hold off on that, since to try and get the frosting thicker, I just kept adding more and more powdered sugar.

Don’t come to the castle, Mario!

Just saw this story and still processing it...

reuters.com/world/europe/teleg

> the investigation was focused on a lack of moderators on Telegram, and that police considered that this situation allowed criminal activity to go on undeterred on the messaging app.

Felicia Davin

@darius There's definitely a lot to process. Feels like our (global) laws are really lagging behind tech. I feel woefully underinformed about this stuff.

Misty

@darius I wonder how much of this has to do with non-encrypted content? Groups aren't encrypted at all, and you have to opt into end-to-end encryption. Does this come down to Telegram being unresponsive to law enforcement including when they're asking about content where Telegram holds the unencrypted text?

Darius Kazemi

Does anybody else feel like they're relearning web development? Once you decide you wanna get off the The Frontend Treadmill, you realize you need to completely reorient your process for building web sites and applications. I think all of the tools and practices that you reach for need to change pretty significantly. It feels like starting over.

Marco Rogers

Just as an example, I find that I can't even get started in the same way. For a long time now, setting up a new project meant installing a build chain. Webpack, create-react-app, esbuild, vite. Whatever thing is in fashion at the time. But the first thing you do is make a bunch of assumptions about your development environment.

But what we're realizing is that those assumptions lock us into a particular path. And we're realizing that we may want to have other paths available to us.

FirElf

@polotek 💯 yes!
I too have been at this since the early days of writing HTML without an IDE but after 6 years in QA, I am not confident I could pass the coding interview for a FE job today.

Good morning fellow #xoxofest attendees! If you woke up with a sore throat, feeling run down, etc etc and are assuming it's con drop or from talking non-stop, might I interest you in also taking a Covid test for the next 3-5 days?

Not trying to be a doomer, just trying to keep us all informed and safe. Hope we can all get some rest and recover!

Out of curiosity (and a little bit of fomo) I just searched Twitter, Mastodon and Bluesky for the #xoxofest tag.

It seems like the main activity happens here in Mastodon. There is only couple of posts on Twitter, and some activity on Bluesky but a good part of the Bluesky posts are from Mastodon accounts bridges.

Not sure what it means but I feel like it’s a good sign.

Ahmet Alphan Sabancı

Also I forgot how much fun it can be to follow events through people live blogging it. #xoxofest
