Kent Sinclair

@CliffWade Both for me. I have a personal/non-work iPhone and a Pixel 7 with my work sim in it right now.

Cliffy Claus πŸŽ…

@Kents Very nice! Out of curiosity, do you prefer one over the other?

While I work for a large Android app, I much prefer iOS in most cases.

Kent Sinclair

@CliffWade it depends. Notifications on Android are better than iOS as expected. Pretty much all of the recent changes on iOS have been terrible. Widgets, App Library, Focus modes all junk which make me want to use Android as my personal daily again.

Matt

@CliffWade I have always switched between iOS and Android but was using iOS more (and almost non-stop for the last 6 years).
Switched to Android last year and pretty much liking it. I would not say either is better or worse, they are just different (and sometimes similar). I like it more now because it feels kind of new as iOS (and also iPhone) feels the same... The last iPhone that got me excited was the X so it was about time to try something different. At least for now.

Cliffy Claus πŸŽ…

@m12k That makes total sense and is a great mindset that a lot of people sadly don't have or can't have for various reasons. They have tunnel vision about one OS or the other.

I use both, extensively and while I prefer iOS over Android in a lot of cases, I prefer Android over iOS in other cases.

I know it's odd for me to say those things above, since I work for a very large Android app and have for going on 8 years. I have use cases for both, but more for iOS than Android.

Matt

@CliffWade some folks just don't understand that these are just phones and operating systems. Use what you like and be happy. No reason to start annoying fanboy wars... That was not even cool 10 years ago.

Cliffy Claus πŸŽ…

@m12k I totally agree. The fanboy thing has never been cool to me in any way.

Jcrabapple

@CliffWade @m12k I'm not a fanboy and Android has a lot of problems, but I can't stand using iOS. Feels like I'm renting a device from Apple that was designed by Fisher Price. I just can't do it. Plus, if you're a FOSS enthusiast, Android is the place to be.

Cliffy Claus πŸŽ…

@jcrabapple @m12k I personally disagree with the design aspect of iPhone's. I feel they are solid devices that are very comfortable.

I do agree that if you are more on the FOSS side of things, then Android is certainly the place to be over iOS.

Matt

@CliffWade @jcrabapple iPhones are designed very well (and so are Android flagships and even mid-rangers). What I personally like about the devices (software aside for a moment) is more choice (aka Foldables).

I also don't have a problem with the ecosystem as I use Google services anyway (also on iPhone). The only thing that stays is my MacBook Pro.

Yaisiel (Yai) Torres

@jcrabapple @CliffWade @m12k "Renting," for me, is more like an "opinionated device and experience". At this moment, I don't mind subscribing to that.

Jcrabapple

@yaitorr @CliffWade @m12k If you just want a device to use, iPhone works great!

Kyle Reddoch

@cliffwade I have used all the devices in the past. Currently, and probably for the unforeseeable future, I use iOS because we are heavily invested in the Apple ecosystem.

Cliffy Claus πŸŽ…

@kylewritescode You see, that's the thing for me right there. The app ecosystem within iOS is hands down far superior than that of the Android app ecosystem.

I feel once you give iOS a fair shot, and really start doing your daily things with it, you can quickly discover that the ecosystem just pulls you in and makes life so simple and easy and looks so much better.

Kyle Reddoch

@cliffwade Exactly. All of our devices are Apple, we use Apple Home, it all just works together.

Alex Hart

@CliffWade my primary device is also my test device :-) we take dogfooding very seriously so I'm pretty well stuck with Android!

Cliffy Claus πŸŽ…

@exallium Dogfooding is a very important thing in so many ways!

Yami no senshi

@CliffWade I was a long time Android user, around the Sony Xperia Z series era and a bit later I’ve had a bunch of phones from Sony, Motorola and on from ZTE but the experience of my last Android phones Xperia Z5 overheating and throttle issues and Bending of the smartphone and the horrid Battery Management of the ZTE phone, killing Apps in the background and even Bluetooth connections constantly without being able to change this without root drove me to iOS and iPadOS

Cliffy Claus πŸŽ…

@Yami_no_senshi Those things can certainly be frustrating when you experience them. Luckily, I don't have those issues on Android. I just prefer the app ecosystem on iOS as it just works so well.

Yami no senshi

@CliffWade it depends on the Android manufacturer and thier Android implementation the Chinese brands with their massive Customization / Skins on top of stock Android are often quite bad I liked Sony because they near stock Android with minimal changes and of course now the Pixels my mom got a Pixel 4a on my recommendation after her Honor got outdated and she likes it. It’s just bad the update support of the 4a ends this year

Kevin :maryland_badge:

@CliffWade I use IOS/IPhone for my mobile device. I find it better for my work flow. I use a mixture of foss apps on the platform. I also like to tinker but only on my laptop/desktop, and I find it humorous no matter what you choose both communities have a group of cult like fanboy mindset. πŸ€¦πŸΎβ€β™‚οΈ

Cliffy Claus πŸŽ…

@kevinyoung There are some folks that have that fanboy mentality, but I honestly feel and see it as being a lot less than what it used to be back in the earlier days.

Cliffy Claus πŸŽ…

@kevinyoung No! I don't do Reddit, at all.

I work for @novalauncher and the Nova Reddit there is a disaster. Simply because we don't own it, run it or have anything to do with it for the most part as our community is on Discord.

Reddit is a shit place for a lot of things and I don't need that toxicity/negativity in my life. πŸ€ͺ

Kevin :maryland_badge:

@CliffWade @novalauncher

Oh really I remember when you guys first came out. I had it install on my moto x. Wow small/big world. It was light years a had of the stock android launcher.

I follow two threads unixporn and earthporn. One for GUI design and other for wallpaper.

Cliffy Claus πŸŽ…

@kevinyoung Thank you for using the app and supporting us. I truly appreciate hearing that from anyone and everyone!

EarthPorn is amazing. I used to use it within Muzei Wallpapers as there is some absolutely amazing stuff there.

Kevin :maryland_badge:

@CliffWade no problem I used it until I left android platform. If my memory serves me well. My last android is phone was galaxy S5 or 6. I’ve been on IOS since IPhone 6plus. It was a good run and glad to you all are still around.

Yes, I agree earthporn thread is for sure amazing.

Cliffy Claus πŸŽ…

@kevinyoung That is awesome and again, thank you for the support! We're still here and we're still kicking and still number one in the Play Store.

I started using iOS around the iPhone 6 and have used it since. I still use both obviously but I much prefer iOS.

Kevin :maryland_badge:

@CliffWade I maybe back and that is going to depend on the pixel tablet.

Cliffy Claus πŸŽ…

@kevinyoung The Pixel Tablet will be quite interesting to see how it is and if Google really sticks with it and keeps improving.

Kevin :maryland_badge:

@CliffWade I honest enjoy both platforms. I’m what you call a fan of technology.

Cliffy Claus πŸŽ…

@kevinyoung Same! Hence my Mastodon instance name, AllThingsTech.social πŸ€ͺ

Kevin :maryland_badge:

@CliffWade fair play, fair play! You have to use a burner account over there for your safety.

Cliffy Claus πŸŽ…

@PeterLinton1 What's old? Your device? The version of Android your device has installed?

Patience

@CliffWade ~ The device. It's an LG6, coming up to 5 years now. LG has also discontinued making phones AFAIK.

Cliffy Claus πŸŽ…

@PeterLinton1 Oh gotcha. Time to get you something new. LG indeed has quit making mobile phones.

Patience

@CliffWade ~ As long as it takes calls & texts, I'm unlikely to upgrade. Your poll presumes a desire to use a mobile for SM (incl Mastadon). Not me. Maybe I shouldn't have replied.

Cliffy Claus πŸŽ…

@PeterLinton1 My poll doesn't assume anything actually. It's simply asking, do you use iOS or Android or something different.

We all use our devices in different ways. I rarely use social media on my mobile devices to be honest as I have more important things to do if I'm on mobile.

Scott Jenson

@CliffWade I use Android mostly because I worked on it so I'm clearly biased. However, I'm also a big web advocate and Apple's crippling of web browsers on iOS (forcing all browsers to use WebKit) is absolutely keeping me from wanting to switch.

Stez :kare_mac:

@CliffWade both, mainly iOS for personal use but also Android for work and keeping up with design patterns

Cliffy Claus πŸŽ…

@stez That's awesome that you use both. I love hearing when people use both and why they do it.

nix

@CliffWade "other" but it's an AOSP derivative, so also kind of android? I'm using grapehene on a pixel 6a and loving it. I currently see no reason to go back to a phone full of google.

Chris Snazell

@CliffWade I use & dislike both. Windows Phone 8.x was the last mobile OS I enjoyed using.

Cliffy Claus πŸŽ…

@chrissn Just curious, what is it you don't like about both and what was it you liked about Windows Phone?

Chris Snazell

@CliffWade
Windows Phone was super lightweight, got out of the way & wasn't obsessed with capturing my attention the way modern iOS & Android are.

My Lumia 930 was peak smartphone.

I don't want my OS to try and push me into platform vendor ecosystems. Most of the "clever" stuff in the OSes is of no use to me so I opt out where I can. Easier on Android than iOS.

Once there's a decent halfway attractive Linux alternative I'll switch to that.

David - Forking Mad

@CliffWade

I can predict it will be iOS. Even although I am Android.

The mastodon demographic based on many of your polls, and others I see, seems to be that the majority are:

American Male, techie, mid-50s, Gamer, Apple devices and echo-system.

(edited: Added 'American')

Cliffy Claus πŸŽ…

@daj I tend to agree. It's funny how one sided polls can be at times.

David - Forking Mad

@CliffWade

It would be great to see a more diverse bunch, but that will come in time.

Cliffy Claus πŸŽ…

@daj I think it will change as well in due time. For now, all the technical type folks have adopted this platform and eventually as other platforms fail or whatever, more diverse people will come here.

Brian Dear

@CliffWade Unclear how it's beneficial from a security standpoint to identify the operating system of one of my devices, for the benefit of a big public poll.

Cliffy Claus πŸŽ…

@brianstorms This has nothing to do with security in any way. Announcing that publicly isn't going to do anything, as people would need way more information than that to do anything to you or your device.

If you're not comfortable announcing it, then simply keep scrolling and don't announce it. That's my opinion at least.

Curtiss Grymala (he/him/his)

@CliffWade I simply don't like the iOS design. I was a diehard Windows Phone fan until it went away (the interface was much closer to what I want out of a mobile OS); I don't like Android nearly as much as I liked Windows Phone, but I still find it much easier to use than iOS.

Ben 🌹 :NERevs:

@CliffWade I use a Mac for work and also generally for fun, so iOS has made sense. I've also been in the Mac/i* ecosystem for like 15 years, so there's a lot of inertia there.

I also, just personally, not an attack, have generally not been thrilled by the Android UIs I’ve used. Responses have never felt as "snappy” from the hardware; I don't like Material Design; and I like that there is a more cohesive set of design patterns across *most* iOS apps

Sara Joy :happy_pepper:

@CliffWade Android, originally because the hardware was much more affordable, and I didn't already use a Mac or iPad.

By the time the first iPhones were coming out, I'd already been using smartphones with Windows Mobile for a few years I think? I'm fuzzy on the timeline...

πŸ—‘οΈπŸΌ

@CliffWade I like using both. Each have their own pros and cons, in my opinion. I used to be an avid fanboy on both sides of the aisle many years ago, but eventually realized it doesn’t matter how people use their products and that it doesn’t affect me in any way. I’m just glad that there are options for everyone (that is until Windows Phone died off which was, I think, equally fantastic.)

Bluedepth

@CliffWade iOS, and not a day goes by when I don’t scream at it and regret it. Every day I hope it doesn’t work. But it does. To spite me. ;) But yes, I hate this and so much more worthless rotten technology. And I’m in IT. The Lord of the Flies.

Eric A. Meyer

@CliffWade iOS, for two reasons. One, I’m a Mac user, so that makes iOS more consistent. But two, Apple does security patching and device support a fairly long way back through their product line, and I value that.

Bart Van de Poel

@CliffWade 57% iPhone. People spend way too much money on phones.

Cliffy Claus πŸŽ…

@bartvdpoel I don't know about others, buy I get the new iPhone each year and I only spend $200 - $300 each year doing so.

So to just assume that iPhone's make you spend more money is really tunnel vision at its finest.

I actually often spend more on my Android devices than I do on my iPhone devices.

v

@CliffWade I initially switched from Android because iOS had massively better support for hearing aids, but two other things I appreciate are length of software support and the understanding that I'm a customer as opposed to primarily an ad target

Sabrina Web :privacypride:

@CliffWade at the moment my mobile phone is a basic nokia phone running symbian. I don't know how long I could keep on using a basic phone, so I'm planning to install LineageOS (which counts as android, I guess)

Jonathan Arnold

@CliffWade my daughters made me move from Android to iOS for the family chat

Marty Ballard :verified:

@CliffWade I'm currently using Android but that's about to change for the following reasons:
My son is a teenager and going into high school and my wife is a high school teacher. According to her the vast majority of students are on iOS so it will be a better experience for my son if he's on iOS.

I've used Android now for over a decade and have been just beat down by always feeling like I'm a beta tester.

Marty Ballard :verified:

@CliffWade Messaging has been atrocious and forever changing - it's just annoying at this point. My breaking point was trying to video call my wife from the grocery store last week, what had Google done? Disabled Duo and made it forced switch to Google Meet and wouldn't allow the video call. I'm just done.

Cliffy Claus πŸŽ…

@headpunk These basic things here are what drives me to use iOS way more than I use Android.

Aaron :apple_inc: :isles:

@headpunk @CliffWade You are πŸ’― correct. I wrote about this last year because Google S-U-C-K-S when it comes to treating their users right.

Here's the juicy part of it:

β€œGoogle kept killing apps, releasing new ones, extolling how it was THE way to go, then killing it shortly thereafter. It's pretty hard to convince someone to jump onto a new messaging platform only to convince someone to do the same time and again. There's a reason WhatsApp and Facebook Messenger have staying power: they've stayed. ”

Luke

@CliffWade I use CalyxOS, so I voted Android, but should give it a shout-out since it's a user-friendly, privacy-oriented, degoogled Android.

Your friendly 'net denizen

@CliffWade I never know how to answer these things. I've been using LineageOS (without Google services), which is Android sorta. I ran into compatibility issues recently over the move to VoLTE on T-mobile (nothing to do with LineageOS), so I'm currently rocking a KaiOS device because I'm tired of waste, both electronic and money.

I dislike all modern phones and try to limit my use of them, but I understand some people find them very valuable.

Cliffy Claus πŸŽ…

@cstanhope This is why I give the option of Other -> Comment below. So that users can do just that and it encourages conversations and encourages others to comment.

Your friendly 'net denizen

@CliffWade Yes you did! πŸ˜€

Sorry if my curmudgeonliness came across as complaining about your poll. You did provide an other. Many of the other polls I've seen are mostly iOS or Android only. πŸ˜†

Cliffy Claus πŸŽ…

@cstanhope LOL You didn't come across as complaining in any way and sorry if I came across as if you were complaining.

I try my best to always offer Other as an option, as I'd much rather have the comments and conversations over the votes themselves.

You know, ulterior motives and such. πŸ€ͺ

zbecker

@CliffWade

I only use #android because there isn't really a good mobile #linux phone at the moment.

IstvΓ‘n

@CliffWade /e/OS (murena) which is an amazing de-googled android variant compatible with all android apps I need (and a bunch more) and with optional cloud-storage

You can check out their mastodon account @murena

Alex 🐘

@CliffWade Android because iOS is too expensive for me. It is more open and has more alternatives to look for. I would really use a Linux phone but has less support nowadays.

Marcus "MajorLinux" Summers

@CliffWade I like using both because each platform has their advantages and disadvantages.

I do think people should weigh those options before making a decision and allow others to live their lives if they go with the opposing platform.

(This is not to say that you are doing the above :) )

MetropleX

@cliffwade in case you said Android as stock I said other for @GrapheneOS

traecer πŸ‚πŸ

@CliffWade I like FreeBSD in theory, but I always end up using Linux.

But QNX? No thank you. πŸ˜„

apgarcia

@CliffWade apple has made some steps in the right direction with regard to "right to repair", but their stance towards it still makes me wary of using their products. also, android is open source.

Dominic πŸ‡ͺπŸ‡Ί πŸ³οΈβ€πŸŒˆ πŸ‡ΊπŸ‡¦

@CliffWade I’m an Apple guy since the 80s, so I’ll admit I’m hardly objective, but iOS just fits me well. I like Linux well enough, but Android just doesn’t gel for me when I try it.

I also like the family management features now my kids are getting old enough to have their own devices. Android equivalents are weaker and less user-friendly.

Hippo πŸ‰

@CliffWade #KaiOS! There's a level of smartness beyond which I'd rather my phones not venture πŸ˜‰

Archit

@CliffWade Android anyday, though i love apple as a company, Android in general is open source and you have much more freedom.

Lau

@CliffWade I switched from Android to iOS a few years ago and still use my Android occasionally but iOS is perfect for me

Martina Pugliese

@CliffWade i use Android, primarily because once you start with one it's harder to switch. But I have to say I've never been an iPhone fan anyway

Star Aasved

@CliffWade I've been a iPhone user since the beginning.

vascorsd

@CliffWade I find it funny that right now it's almost 50/50 for iphone and android and I can only think this is such an american centric poll since iphone dominating like that doesn't happen at all on other places. Androids are used around here almost 10x more.

Jeri Dansky

@CliffWade I'm entirely in the Apple world, so of course I use an iPhone. I'm glad Apple still makes one small enough to fit into my women's jeans pockets.

poponion

@CliffWade

Android because is what is installed on the cheapest mass phones

Rogier

@CliffWade KaiOS on a Nokia 2720. I do have an iPad for the modern stuff.

Thual

@CliffWade Android, but not the Google one. I am on /e/ OS, a degoogled ROM created by Murena in France. The project is lead by the creator of Mandrake, and the foundation also developes an entire ecosystem based on nextckoud so the project is very cool.

djsumdog
Android, but actually Lineage without any Gapps/de-googled.
Jawsh Mizzle
@cliffwade Pinephone running Arch and Googleless Android as a backup device.
the_white_wolf

@CliffWade

Always android and since my Xperia Z3 time i'm using AOSP Custom Roms without Gapps.
Currently i have a Pixel 7 with GrapheneOS. It's a Custom Rom with focus on security and privacy and i like it very much. It is stable as stock and gets very fast updates.

Peter Schmidt 🦈

@cliffwade
Laut Statista mΓΌsste der Android Anteil bei 71% und iOS bei 27% zu liegen kommen.
