@PPP_Grifter @mmasnick but Twitter noticed them! They probably got three, maybe 4 new users today! @ebooksyearn Yeah Nostr feels like it's in its infancy. Including that but not Gab or Parler is pretty funny. @ebooksyearn I've been playing around with Nostr. It has maybe 500 users and is extremely barebones (I mentioned it here the other day). But Jack Dorsey is talking about it, so that's how it got included. Tribel got some buzz at the beginning of the Musk regime as a possible alternative (it sucks). @ebooksyearn @mmasnick So the Twitter terms are themselves in violation of the Twitter terms by promoting those services? @cupcakezealot @mmasnick he'll amend it to allow promoting other websites if you're a blue subscriber, to try and blackmail higher sub rates @mmasnick Your tweets aren't at Twitter, Mike! They're in Joan's house! And Mr. Postini's house! @mmasnick Would you say this will become an example of the Streisand effect? By which I mean would you, specifically, say that into a microphone so we can get a soundbite of it for posterity? @SocialCommentaryBot I don't get to decide these things. The Streisand Effect prevails on its own... @mmasnick serves as a stark reminder that if one is purchasing a social media site, what they are really purchasing is the list of registered users. And its not like we can't find people elsewhere without a link in a bird site profile? I can admit I WAS a Musk fanboy as recently as 2019, but I have the grace to admit I was wrong. I do think his rise to stratospheric wealth and power is contributing to his downfall. Nobody can tell him 'NO' anymore. @tundrafox907 @Popehat @mmasnick this is not a set of people known for their restraint @duckswithpants @Popehat @mmasnick no reaction from US. We need to respond to stuff like this with "are you still talking?" energy. @mmasnick I wonder whether aknowledging existence of other social media sites is also a permaban... @mmasnick link to source? Sorry, I've been seeing some believable but ultimately fake screen captures from the birdsite. @magnus919 @mmasnick @SummerBreeze @mmasnick I guess we've hit the "keyword filters don't work" stage in the moderation learning curve. ...I feel like we should maybe think of another name for that. When it comes to whatever the fuck it is Musk is doing at Twitter, any description with the word "learning" in it is clearly a misnomer. @mmasnick, not that I expect any consistency, of course, but what's the difference between linking to another social site and, um, linking to *anything* else separate from the site? I do raise this partially because it makes me wonder if that's next - throttling or prohibiting links to (disfavored) news sites. Really, it's time to break away from that place. @jodmentum @mmasnick Plus, it would help piss off the trust fund manbaby far-right grifting fake tech boy some more I imagine. @mmasnick Nothing says ‘these are the best numbers Twitter’s ever seen!’ quite like this. I can't wait to see how Musk's Renfields (David and Jason) try to spin this as some sort of top level business thinking. Like Jason is going to stupidly relate it to "Amazon will never let a Wal Mart link on their website!" While David will some how say it is breaking anti-trust laws and punishable by 50 years in federal prisons to force Twitter to host a link on its website that goes to a competitor. @ZenOfDesign @mmasnick @mmasnick A capitalist that is used to buying out his competition has no idea what to do when the free market happens is rich @mmasnick Looks like I’m getting banned after the fact for having Mastodon in my username. So glad I left that hellhole @marklemley @mmasnick So by prohibiting linktr.ee he's going to hurt most people with a network of professional sites? @mmasnick Anyone remember the grass mud horse and other censorship work-arounds? Comedy gold! @mmasnick Is the a real Twitter policy? Given Musk I don't doubt it but... golly. @mmasnick on the bird, I looked at profiles to see where they were going. Not that I had a big account, but this should fall within his new rules. Easy for them to search terms, but they can’t search images as easily, can they? Birds could write their new locations on their headers, couldn’t they? @mmasnick the 'paid promotion is okay' loophole in the new policy is interesting because it means they can't plausibly say this is a safety issue -- it's purely anticompetitive @mmasnick And then there's this when you click a Mastodon link that was created before this Free Speech extravaganza @mmasnick You knew it was going to happen. I’m out of there. The water over here is much nicer. @mmasnick Let's try if I can quote my own posts on mastodon: https://ruhr.social/@felix/109536146940367988 I want to burn my twitter user name. That's an excellent way to get my account banned without violating reasonable TOS on any other platform. Working on it now! @mmasnick @Standplaats_KRK yeah what does this have to mean for twitters user numbers @mmasnick I noticed this today as I was trying to add my Mastodon handle to my Twitter bio and it kept telling me I was linking to malware. 😂 RIP bird app. @mmasnick he bans linktree but not your own website, so I just gotta post up the link to my Mastodon on my website that's linked on Twitter @mmasnick @TabathaSouthey my server is very slow right now so I think people are fleeing @mmasnick lol I found out this from this tweet and just deleted it from my Twitter profile before I get banned. So dumb. @mmasnick @taylorlorenz I‘ve put my username into the location field. Let‘s see how long it will take to ban me. That said, to check this I had to log in again and was shocked by the number of ads delivered to me. Definitely more than ever before. @mmasnick this isn’t locking us in, this is pushing us out! We don’t have to stay if he’s making the place hostile. @mmasnick lately we forget how shitty meta is. The same is on Instagram with a lot of "forbidden" site. But unlike on Twitter you won't get a notice only your account gets shadow banned. @mmasnick wrong - Twitter user engagement is up - the world doesn’t revolve around 20 something Palo Alto left wing activists @mmasnick I just keep tweeting yesterday's wapo article about how to get started on mastodon. I'll continue to do that til my account is closed. @mmasnick I'm still waiting for Mark Zuckerberg to ban me from facebook for sharing my Mastadon links. Oh wait, he doesn't have to. It doesn't look like an outright block to *all* Mastodon links. Here's what I get from my 11/7/22 tweet directing my Twitter followers to my Mastodon account (by link). I was able to follow the link to my profile in the Twitter browser after this. Perhaps it's a prospective policy change that doesn't affect old tweets and activity? @mmasnick the obfuscation this will generate will be hilarious "I'm off to join the friends of John" |
@mmasnick Tribel and Nostr have to be pumped to be included, I've never heard of them
