Honestly, if you’re in the US, please vote. Don’t let a fascist take control. Don’t think that it can’t possibly happen there. This might be your last chance to vote. Don’t waste it. Sitting it out won’t help your cause but it will definitely endanger a lot of lives. That’s my take on it.

@Gargron Whether it's Trump or Harris, a fascist is going to win the U.S. presidential election. Those of us opposed to fascism can vote for Jill Stein. Even though it's clear she's not going to win, we have the opportunity to build an anti-fascist alternative in American politics.

Dag Ågren ↙︎↙︎↙︎

@gwm Come on. It's 2024. At this point you need to be able bring yourself to admit that Jill Stein is Putin's puppet. She is supported by one of the biggest fascists in power today.

It would be lovely to have a viable green party in the US. But *you don't have that*. You have a Russian op. Jill Stein is not what you want.

Harris is far from perfect, but is also nowhere near is a fascist. Trump and Jill Stein, however, literally are.

George Maschke

@WAHa_06x36 I have seen no credible evidence that Jill Stein is in any sense "Putin's puppet."

As for Kamala Harris being a fascist, she's in the pocket of moneyed interests and supports a militaristic foreign policy, including full throated support for Israel's ongoing genocide of the Palestinian people.

baconandcoconut

@gwm @WAHa_06x36 There's a lot of space between "intermittently beholden to some corporate interests" and "we won't have elections anymore and will violently round up our political adversaries." Neither is ideal but one is clearly better.

George Maschke

@baconandcoconut @WAHa_06x36 For me, support for genocide is a red line I am unwilling to cross.

Dag Ågren ↙︎↙︎↙︎

@gwm @baconandcoconut Understood, and it sucks that you do not get a good choice on that, but, that's it: You don't get a good choice on that.

Trump is *much worse* on that than Harris, and a vote for Jill Stein helps only Trump.

George Maschke

@WAHa_06x36 @baconandcoconut My vote for Jill Stein will not help Donald Trump in any way.

Dag Ågren ↙︎↙︎↙︎

@gwm @baconandcoconut I struggle to believe you are actually so naïve that you believe this.

George Maschke

@WAHa_06x36 @baconandcoconut A vote for Jill Stein does not add to any other candidate's vote tally.

DELETED replied to Dag Ågren ↙︎↙︎↙︎

@WAHa_06x36 @gwm @baconandcoconut if you look at his profile... I mean he likely is that stupid.

And quite conservative.

George Maschke replied to Dag Ågren ↙︎↙︎↙︎

@WAHa_06x36 @baconandcoconut You seem to believe that I had an ethical duty to vote for Kamala Harris. That was never going to happen. She disqualified herself by supporting genocide.

Dag Ågren ↙︎↙︎↙︎ replied to George

@gwm I don't think you had a "duty" to do anything. I think you wanted to do something - prevent genocide - and you made a choice that ended up hurting that goal. That has nothing to do with "duty", and everything to do with how things work in practice.

George Maschke replied to Dag Ågren ↙︎↙︎↙︎

@WAHa_06x36 I don't see how voting for a candidate who supports a genocide will help to end it.

Dag Ågren ↙︎↙︎↙︎ replied to George

@gwm Because that one candidate can have her mind changed, and the other can not, and risks ending democracy as a whole.

Brian Stafford replied to George

@gwm @WAHa_06x36 @baconandcoconut considering both Putin and Netanyahu are gambling on a Trump victory, it's fair to say a vote for Trump is a vote for genocide. Sometimes you need to hold your nose and vote strategically, not because you think Harris will be bad, but because electing Trump would be catastrophic. That is the eventuality to prevent.

DELETED

@gwm that's not how any of this works.

@gwm @WAHa_06x36 @baconandcoconut This is observably, demonstrably, incorrect in every context minus ONE. (the only one you're choosing to recognize)

You aren't CHOOSING to help Donald Trump, but your choice does help him when you take into account every other variable that is both obvious and historically repeated and documented.

Splitting the vote in close races is the same as, or worse, as supporting the worse option. This is a literal thing used and abused for decades now.

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spoiler_

This is not new. You are not going to disprove it by simply stamping your feet and crying like a petulant child.

Voting against Harris, as detestable as you believe it to be, is voting for Trump in effect. The degree of that effect varies depending on what state you are in.

Voting for Jill Stein, who has 0% chance of winning the election, is a vote for Trump by proxy.

@gwm @WAHa_06x36 American activists will not be able to continue advocating for an end to the atrocities in Palestine under a US dictatorship. The power to stop US support won't be about public opinion, it will be about the whim of one angry, all-powerful person who is willing to put activists in jail whenever he feels like it.

DELETED

@baconandcoconut @gwm @WAHa_06x36 counterpoint, they won't need to. If Trump wins there will be no Palestinians left to support.

@WAHa_06x36 Jill Stein attended a media event in Moscow in 2015. She was a speaker there and attended at her own expense. Vladimir Putin sat at her table for about fifteen minutes and pleasantries were exchanged. It takes strongly motivated reasoning to leap from this to the conclusion that Jill Stein is a "Russian asset."

Dag Ågren ↙︎↙︎↙︎

@gwm How many "media events" did Harris attend with Putin?

And that is far from the only reason, it is just the most blatantly visible one. Did you look at who else attended?

As for other reason, there are many: thirdway.org/memo/jill-stein-a

@gwm The problem with Jill Stein is that she's a Russian puppet that seemingly does nothing besides asking for money every general election. It's nice to see a growing movement for a third party to break the two-party 'rule' the US had for decades, if not centuries, but I'd still recommend voting for Harris, if you even want to have a chance at a third party.

Trump/Vance would certainly worsen things for everyone, heck he might go full-on hard-right or fascist. I don't think this is the time for a third party vote, when the stakes seem so high.

Also, how in the hell is Kamala a 'fascist'? What are you smoking?

Nina Felwitch :v_trans:

@alextecplayz @gwm people like George here are indirectly promoting a vote for Trump. The way the US voting system works is that every vote for a third party will indirectly support whoever has the most votes.

Splitting leftist votes between multiple candidates will lead to Trump winning. There is no denying that fact. The US system doesn't allow for coalitions like Germany, where multiple parties can band together to form the government, even though individually they have fewer votes than another party.

Everyone who wants to prevent another Trump presidency will have to vote Harris.

@Gargron@mastodon.social @gwm@mastodon.social These people should really read some political strategy... Preventing a fascist bigot from being president (again) is much more important than voting for someone who is guaranteed to not win. Learn to compromise.

@gwm every vote that is not going to Harris and instead to a third party with no chance of winning will indirectly go to Trump. By not voting for Harris you're voting for Trump.
Maybe do some research about the US voting system.

@gwm Opposing fascism by voting against the antifascist coalition with a throwaway candidate that's not even on the ballot in most states is not being antifascist.

@Gargron Name one 'fascist' on the ballot. 🙄

@realdanny@mastodon.online Trump, or if you'd consider the Green Party on the ballot as well somehow, Jill Stein.

@Gargron Man, stating one's opposition to fascism sure does bring out some stellar reply guys, huh?

Douglas Edwards

@Gargron Indeed. Voted early for Harris-Walz. And stretching the meaning of the word #fascist to claim that both candidates are fascist doesn't change the reality. The USA has always had fascistic elements. But only #Trump will set up an overt fascist dictatorship. And if he wins, any and ALL approaches to making a better world will become 1000 times harder. I cast Green Party protest votes in 2016 and 2020, when Trump would not have been able to realize his fascist dream. Not this time.

@Gargron Even if you take the replies at face value, too many people seem to think the POTUS is a ceremonial position, and so voting or not on principle without regard to the actual outcome is a meaningful thing.

Results matter. They have consequences. A vote which increases the chances of Trump winning ONLY means a higher chance of Trump winning.

RedCentrist

@Gargron Calling your opponents fascist is puerile, and may well deter people from voting for your candidate. Are you trying to get Trump over the line?

@Gargron Thank you for this important reminder, Eugen. Many of us can feel the weight of this election and the consequences it may bring. Every vote is a chance to protect the values we hold dear and to support leaders who respect democracy and human rights. Thank you for using your platform to encourage participation!

Meanwhile, can you make a way to have a filter that can take out 'US' without filtering the word 'us'?

I'm european and am pretty annoyed by the huge overload of usual 'merica!!' crying posts on my timeline about 'harris yeaaayy' and 'trump booo' and what not.

There's tons of european posts which I'd like to see since I'm in EUROPE.

Get it fixed please, thanks.

@Gargron I agree. @Gargron And just so we're clear, Jill Stein is not who to vote for. Jill Stein will not win. Even if you despise Harris, pinch your nose and vote for her, because if you vote Harris you'll be able to vote again in 2028, and on all the issues that matter her stance is closer to correct than Trump's. If you vote Trump you won't necessarily. If you vote Stein...well, in 2016, Russia meddled in favor of Stein, which should tell you enough to know not to vote for her (nbcnews.com/politics/national-).

Raccoon at TechHub for Harris

@Gargron
I am highly concerned, as a moderator on this platform, that if Trump wins, there is a certainty that he will let Elon Musk call the shots at the #FCC and #FEC as a kickback for his full support for the campaign, which will directly threaten the North #American #Fediverse #servers. I need to post the full endorsement here, but I am definitely telling people on this network that they need to VOTE FOR KAMALA HARRIS, if for no other reason than to keep our comms open.

Steve Popovich

@Gargron I voted early...I understand the assignment.

Raccoon at TechHub for Harris

@Gargron
As Server Staff and people who are trying to grow the Fediverse, we need to come out and be clear about this: a Trump presidency will not only be disastrous for the country, but for the Fediverse itself, and democratic and pro-free-speech movements in general.

It has been made clear that Trump WILL give Elon Musk, the very person many people came here to get away from, direct influence over the FCC and FEC, regulatory agencies which are not only critical to the operation of a free and fair internet, but which have the ability to directly threaten our American servers and staff members.

If the US citizens here do not get out and VOTE FOR KAMALA HARRIS, we are going to see a LOT of problems for the network.

And if y'all have friends who may be on the fence, go talk to them, offer to go to the polls with them, do whatever it takes to get as many of our fellow US Citizens to get out and VOTE FOR KAMALA HARRIS as possible!
