Weโ€™ve made the hard decision to end our experiment with Mozilla.social and will shut down the Mastodon instance on December 17, 2024. Thank you for being part of the Mozilla.social community and providing feedback during our closed beta. You can continue to use Mozilla.social until December 17. Before that date, you can download your data here (mozilla.social/settings/export), and migrate your account to another instance following these instructions (support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/m).

@rail_
Mozilla is such a terrible company, really sucks that they are the only alternative to chromium based browsers, and they still suck as a company.

This is why we need a community maintained browser, something that is made by the community and for the community. Where those maintaining it aren't insulated from the community's wishes. Mozilla is insulated from them and that's a big problem for the future of Firefox, and anything else they make.

@alxlg @mozilla Very well. So well we decided to discontinue.

Spirit Of Star

@mozilla why,i am tired of mozilla shutting everything down without properly developing and marketing products, mozilla.social had potential and is going to Mozilla Graveyard to join many products with potential not unlike mozilla.social,i give up on mozilla

Raindrops and Roses

@echir Why do you think they're closing down mozilla.social?

@Lazarou @mozilla

sheislaurence

@raindrops_and_roses @echir @Lazarou @mozilla you would expect at a minimum some explanation with the announcement, a link to an article, the lessons of the experiment?

grauhausen

@mozilla need more resources for doing the exact opposite of what users want I guess

Tarkus

@mozilla You guys are doing a great job of limiting your market share! ๐Ÿ‘

chebra

@rooneymcnibnug @mozilla Shows how much mozilla cares about what people want.

Mr. Q The Pizza Demon

@mozilla I just hope the money you save by shutting down mozilla.social can be used to go towards your AI chatbot bullshit that none of your users actually fucking want.

Nathaniel Knudsen

@mozilla thatโ€™s unfortunate to hear. Where will the Mozilla accountโ€™s handle be moved to?

Nathaniel Knudsen

@hazelnot @mozilla maybe, though they donโ€™t have a handle there yet ๐Ÿคท๐Ÿผโ€โ™‚๏ธ

Deus

@mkljczk @mozilla Won't be surprised if Threads also defederates in the future. Once you're hooked by following accounts in Threads, they'll pull the plug forcing you to create an account in Threads - "...must have that Threads dopamine fix".

As for Mozilla, always doubted their intentions of joining the Fediverse. The 'experiment' lingo - meaning, "Look it's an experiment. We can abandon it anytime." They got good press for it too and managed to stay relevant.

And whatever happened to that something called Tumblr joining the Fediverse? lol

@stoicswe
They'll just be deleted after it shuts down, that's how fedi works.
You can manually migrate to any other fedi instance to keep your social graph (follows and followers) when you choose a different one.
If anyone you follow migrates, you'll automatically start following their new account.

Nathaniel Knudsen

@halotroop2288 that makes sense and is super cool you can keep the social graph, thatโ€™s something I was not aware of tbh that someone could do.

In this case, I was wondering more where the Mozilla Org handle itself (Mozillaโ€™s main account) where that will be migrated toโ€ฆ I wanted to keep following them on their new handle.

Caroline Bell :verified:

@stoicswe
Probably will just get deleted. Corporations really aren't welcome on fedi. Maybe they'll go to mastodon.social because they're extremely lax about gatekeeping.

Nathaniel Knudsen

@halotroop2288 ah ok, good to know. I am pretty new to mastodon (been on and off the platform over the last couple of years), thank you for the insight into the culture hereโ€ฆ appreciate it a lot ๐Ÿ™ƒ

Is there any cultural things a new-to-mastodon person like myself should know?

Stu

@mozilla Are your various (product) accounts staying on Mastodon?

"we've made the hard decision to avoid public forums where people can call us on our bullshit"

Draconic NEO

@letsbekind2
Mozilla trying to insulate themselves from their community because they know the community they've built doesn't approve of the things they want.
The people who only really support them or use their products, because it's well known that most of the world is chromium based, so they don't have swathes of normies to replace the people they alienate with these practices.

@mozilla

Miah Johnson

@Draconic_NEO @letsbekind2 @mozilla Exactly!

We Firefox users are literally <4% of the users on most of these sites. Who do they think they are going to win over? What is their overall plan? They're clearly high as fuck on some silicon valley bullshit.

Biorreactivo

@mozilla just another greedy corporation. So dissapointing.

Blisterexe

@precariousmind @mozilla explain how you got from "we have decided to stop operating our own instance that has paid mods" to "greedy corpo grr"

Nishcott

@Blisterexe I'm pretty sure that comment isn't limited to the topic of this thread.

Caroline Bell :verified:

@Blisterexe
Probably already believed that. Just seeing this as one more bad decision to throw on the pile.

Personally, I didn't know Mozilla had a fediverse instance. I'm glad they rarely come across my timeline. The fediverse is for humans, not corporations. It has no advertising by design.

Pumpkin Spice Cat

@mozilla I remember when Mozilla was led by people who understood the assignment

Distante

@mozilla I hope you will migrate your accounts to mastodon.social

Hisham

@mozilla "Ever since we shutdown mozilla.social and disengaged from Mastodon, the sentiment analysis on our social media posts regarding our AI initiatives shows positive reactions went up a staggering 857%! I guess everyone on X seems to like them! A great win for our shareholโ€”I mean, our sponsors!"

Blisterexe

@hisham_hm @mozilla theyre atill going to be on mastodon, just not on their own instance

Leroy

@hisham_hm @mozilla feels a little like this:

Iโ€™m not even sure why they canโ€™t maintain an account which simply posts all the stuff they normally would on other platforms. Surely they are using a service that manages cross-platform posting.

Simpsons meme โ€œweโ€™ve tried nothing, and weโ€™re all out of ideasโ€
Wyatt (๐Ÿณ๏ธโ€โšง๏ธโ™€?)

@hisham_hm @mozilla them using telemetry to justify every decision knowing damn well that people who care turn it off

Dinger

@mozilla I ended my experiment with Mozilla last year. However, it was an easy decision for me.

Drew

@mozilla Can you be honest with us about what is going on with your company? How can we help you get back on track? -Sincerely, a concerned, supportive user.

TCD ๐ŸŽฎโ€‹

@mozilla We didn't provide the 'Yay, AI!' attitude that you were looking for I assume. Well, don't let the door hit you on the bum bum on your way out.

octoturt

@mozilla come on guys, it's just a bog-standard mastodon instance. it costs you pennies to run and gives a clear official channel for mozilla communications in the fediverse. surely you can stand to spend a few dollars of the hundreds of millions you get from google for search to keep it open?

octoturt

@mozilla i want to love you guys but i can't help but recognize that the money side of things is preventing the mozilla foundation from living up to its own goals of defending user privacy and supporting the open web. do better.

Blisterexe

@octoturt @mozilla mozilla.social was super strictly moderated (by paid mods), thats expensive

DELETED

@mozilla millions of dollars vs small admin, why is it so hard. Why didnโ€™t you give it to someone else instead.

Chris Warwick

@mozilla In my list-of-companies-I'd-like-to-be-able-to-repect this is another nail in the coffin of mozilla.
It's amazingly hard to find a browser that's both functional and respectful. That's capitalism I suppose ๐Ÿ˜ž

Kierkrampusgaanks regretfully

@mozilla Too many user responses to decisions that couldnโ€™t be purged from data sets so that execs get what they asked for?

lebout2canap โš

@mozilla You don't have to imitate Google either in their habit of shutting down every service they launch.

Troed Sรฅngberg

@mozilla What result from the experiment is behind the decision? Cost / maintenance hours / community fit etc.

I can't imagine there being another social network with a higher ratio of Firefox users than here.

@mozilla I love you but please turn off ur phone or give me a dall. I cannot support hate. Please stop this. I know this isnโ€™t your heart.

@mozilla yeah, we get it, Mozilla is AI and asocialโ€ฆ

Liberterian Fox

@mozilla

I have a feeling that by the end of the year, Mozilla will be completely enshittificated.

Glad I finally switched to LibreWolf after Firefox got ChatGPT integration and ad-measurement spyware pre-enabled.

Fuck you, Mozilla. You are becoming the very thing you were supposed to be fighting - another greedy corporation.

Caroline Bell :verified:

@fox84
Enshitify, enshittifying, enshittified, enshitification.

SkipfordJ

@fox84 @mozilla Doesn't LibreWolf's existence depend entirely on Firefox? Like, if Mozilla shuts down, so does LibreWolf?

I'm trying to understand the structure, because after the AI horseshit, I'm trying to find the right path for both browser and email software.

Liberterian Fox

@SkipfordJ LibreWolf is based on Firefox. Firefox is open source. If Mozilla gets shut down, Firefox will be forked and continue to be developed by the community.

Miah Johnson

@mozilla when you hire a bunch of ex-google people, ex-Chrome devs, and are sniffing the farts of ai while your userbase diminishes due to multiple incomprehensible changes you should reflect on that instead of closing down this experiment.

Linh Pham

@mozilla Mozilla graveyard is starting to get full and you're jump into ads and AI is *not* what we want. We want an open source, non-data collecting and independent web browser and mail client via Firefox and Thunderbird, in order to avoid the Chromium monoculture.

knova

@mozilla booooooooooo

booooooooooo

stop paying your CEO so much

stop the AI bullshit

Spooky Guy

@mozilla Mozilla is so damn lazy. That must be why they want AI to do all their work for them. Company quickly cratering.

Franรงois

@mozilla can we at least get some sort of explaination or takeaway

Ozzy

@mozilla@mozilla.social that is a shame, will miss your 2 posts a month.

Sebastian Laube

@mozilla Yet another totally stupid decision. Sniffing to much LLM farts recently?

Jenkins

@mozilla How much did it actually cost to run that instance? I canโ€™t imagine it would have been an outrageous amount of money.

Doctor Popular

@mozilla this is such a bummer. I thought Mozilla's experiments with the social web were truly some of the most exciting (and sustainable) things Mozilla has worked on in years. Really sad that it's getting shut down so early.

Blisterexe

@docpop @mozilla their accounts are still going to be on mastodon, just on mastodon.social

Doctor Popular

@Blisterexe @mozilla I was assuming they'd continue to have a presence on the fediverse, but the part I was referring to is on running their instance and encouraging users to sign up there blog.mozilla.org/en/mozilla/mo

Danny Colin

@docpop @Blisterexe @mozilla Some team-specific accounts have moved to other instances but I wouldn't hold my breath on the main account to be very active in the future.

Chrisโ€‹โ€Œโ€‹โ€ฌ Hayesโ€Œโ€‹โ€‹โ€‹

@docpop @Blisterexe @mozilla the most worrying aspect for me is that Firefox never used Mastodon, they post on threads, but they do not use the Fediverse integration.

Dragon-sided D

@mozilla Suggestion: make #Librewolf redundant by making a free noncommercial open source browser.

@mozilla so glad I switched my browser to Vivaldi.

Scotty Trees

@cozymel yeah thatโ€™s literally just supporting Google mate, bless your heart.

๐Ÿ‰

@scottytrees condescending much? And what are you even talking about?

Caroline Bell :verified:

@cozymel
Condescension was intended.
Vivaldi is just a Chromium fork. Which is maintained by Google.
You support Google when you use Chromium forks the same way you support Mozilla when you use Firefox or Gecko forks.
Since the W3 standard is so complex, you have to support one of them for the time being, as there are no other major web browser engines.

OhWeh ๐Ÿค #RIPNatenom ๐Ÿ’”

@mozilla

I see. You focus on the reputable channels. Like Twitter, LinkedIn or TikTOK.

What a move๐Ÿฅณ

CadeJohnson

@mozilla inadequate engagement-monitoring tools on Mastodon, I'm guessing? Couldn't document your "reach"? Leaving this platform conveys lack of vision, imho

Sarvo

@mozilla@mozilla.social oh no why are you leaving :(

It could be great training data for your AI BULLSHIT.

exitcode

@mozilla hey mozilla, not surprizing at all after you included ppa ad tracking into Firefox. Disgusting! :blobcatangery:

Quinn9282 ๐Ÿ–ฅ๏ธ๐ŸŒ™โœŒ๏ธ

@mozilla Are you gonna post a more elaborate statement about why you're closing mozilla.social and/or how well the experience went? Just vaguely saying it's shutting down isn't very helpful.

[*insert rant about mozilla here*]

Snow :debian: :matrix: :xmpp:

@mozilla

On the same day, I read first this matrix.org/blog/2024/09/whatsa and then this post. A myth has collapsed on me. Too bad, I'll have to look elsewhere.๐Ÿค”

@mozilla
I ask from you a more detailed reason.
You can have arguments.
But just that single post won't cut it.

If it's money related, may I see true figures ? Because from your last public business numbers, you were funding things that totally alienate both your users and contributors / devs.

If it's to prepare a new federated kind of software / plaforms, cudos to you, if you feel limited on mastodon, but really we need more answers from an org as big as you. You can't be fad chasing. That's breaking people's hope and donations into you.

@mozilla with this being an experiment and all, will you write sort of what you learned? What questions you wanted to answer with the experiment and what those answers were?

Ben Werdmuller

@tante @mozilla +1 to this also - I'm particularly interested in what would have made the experiment a success / something worth pursuing?

Scotty Trees

@mozilla you make it harder and harder and harder with each passing announcement to support you guysโ€ฆ

tunda

@mozilla I am not surprised that Mozilla is saying goodbye to the Fediverse. However, I am interested in the reasons and arguments that led to the closure of the own instance.

๐˜‹๐˜ช๐˜ณ๐˜ฌ

@mozilla And where will we get updates in a social media context from you from that point on?

@mozilla maybe people will migrate to librewolf.social then.

@mozilla Makes sense, since you lot get roasted on here whenever you post the sort of cringe you get away with on other platforms.

Emil Jacobs - Collectifission

@mozilla I guess AI, something nobody asked for, takes too much resources.

Zoidberg "you should feel bad" meme.
Lawrence Pritchard Waterhouse

@mozilla You really managed to properly tank a once stellar reputation, this is a truly appropriate capstone to that effort. Good job. Now fuck off.

Ojฤrs Kapteinis

@mozilla How much does this instance cost for you per year compared to all the money you burn outside of your core business?

Caroline Bell :verified:

RIP bozo.

I'd like to see the Mozzarilla Sticks join other instances, but not if they're backing the corporate side of Mozilla; the AI crap, Pocket, etc.

Darth ล ฤŒ! โœž

@mozilla as a single individual who is financing alone for the majority of expenses of my Mastodon gaming instance, I will only say that I have no plans to close it and I will continue setting aside a part of my free time to serve the gaming community which has placed their trust into me as their sysadmin and their player two.

Thank you, Mozilla, for participating in Fediverse. We shall meet again.

๐Ÿ”žLabrus๐Ÿณ๏ธโ€โšง๏ธ

@mozilla Users: Read the room. Why don't you just sell to Google, and get out the way for a new community lead project?

Mozilla: *fingers in ears* la la la, we're not listening, talk to the AI. ๐Ÿ˜œ

DELETED

@mozilla Well I made the hard decision to ditch you once you pivoted to be an advertising and AI company. You won't be missed.

AlexTECPlayz

@mozilla Deeply disappointed in what Mozilla has become lately. Closing Mozilla Social was to be expected at some point, I guess it shows how much you care about the Fediverse when your own instance lasted just a year and a half.

At least I'm hoping you'll publish what you've learned (if anything) out of this 'experiment' soon enough.

Evan Prodromou

@mozilla Thanks for the hard work. I wonder if you've considered releasing the login-with-Mozilla-account code for mozilla.social as Open Source software for others to use.

@mozilla So, you're tired of getting actual feedback from your users.

Seth ๐ŸŽ™๏ธ:jawn_sg:

@mozilla The beauty of the fediverse is that you can move your stuff.

Stein

@mozilla Judging by this comment section I wouldn't blame anyone for leaving this toxic shotshow.

Thank god there are nicer corners of the Fediverse out there. But if the crowd in this comment section is the kind of people who are drawn towards commenting on on Mozilla operated platforms, there's little doubt Mozilla is better off distancing themselves as much as possible.

Christ.

You insult our intelligence by lying to us, it was not a hard decision, you wanted to end this because you wanted more money to develop AI features that almost all of your real userbase hates.

All because AI is the next big trend, this isn't any different from what Brave did with Crypto, and we all know how that turned out. Chasing trends will just alienate your userbase, and destroy the trust and reputation you've earned. Don't think for one moment that trust is indestructible, once you've blown it you'll be hard pressed to earn it back.
