#PeerTube is a type of Fediverse server for hosting video and audio. It's free open source software, so anyone can set up their own server (just like Mastodon).
Because anyone can start their own server, it's extra-important that there are safe ways to discover and search nice videos on PeerTube.
I've tried to create a safe PeerTube search/discovery service at:

If you're tagged in a conversation you don't want to take part in, you can mute the conversation's notifications:
1. Go to one of your posts in the thread you want to mute 2. Click ⋯ and select Mute conversation 3. @feditips One nice thing about PixelFed (at least when I first made an account there) is that many of the accounts it suggests on the main instance are Mastodon accounts, which is a nice display of compatibility
A good way to discover interesting posts on here is to follow hashtags. When you do this, posts with the tags will start showing up in your timeline even from accounts you don't follow.
To follow a hashtag, just search for that hashtag, then click the "Follow" button at the top of the page of results for that tag.
To check what you're following, go to your profile and select "followed hashtags" or #

@feditips@mike Worth noting that you still need to follow people because hashtags alone won’t get anything. As I understand it, they are retrieved from the instances of the people you follow.
If you want to let people know about your account on here, it's important to include your full account address (also known as a "Fediverse address").
If you paste a full Fediverse account address into the search box on any server, it will always make the account profile appear, even if previous searches drew a blank.
You can exchange account addresses with others just like you might exchange email addresses or phone numbers.

@feditips Im pretty sure I've heard "webfinger ID" come up more since I think this is the first time I've heard "fediverse address". YMMV, and my brain is toast from this morning.
For safety reasons, Pixelfed will block DMs from people you don't follow. However, this is just a default option, you can change it if you prefer.
If you use Pixelfed and want to receive DMs from anyone:
1. Log into your account on your Pixelfed server's website 2. Go to Account Settings 3. Go to Privacy 4. Tick the box marked "Receive Direct Messages from anyone" 5. Click the "Submit" button below

Someone's asked me to remind people to set the image focus / crop centre tool when uploading images on Mastodon.
Although the Mastodon default web interface no longer crops images, some other apps and interfaces do, and images may be difficult to see on some timelines if the focus hasn't been set.
To set focus on Mastodon web interface: 1. Attach image 2. Click Edit 3. Choose focus point 4. Click Apply
Apps will have various interfaces for setting focus.
Request time! 🎉

Mastodon 4.2.0 brings a number of new options for searching. You can add special operators to filter what you search for:
has:media or poll or embed language:fr or other language codes (usually 2 letters) is:reply or sensitive from:user or me (me is for your own posts) in:all or library (library means posts you've interacted with) before:date (YYYY-MM-DD) during:date after:date
Make sure there's no space after :
For example, to show results with polls include phrase has:poll in your search.

@feditips Could you describe if these features depend on instance settings? Could an instance prohibit the new global search serverside or will it just work for everyone everywhere?
A much-requested feature added to Mastodon 4.2.0 is the ability to follow accounts in Lists while hiding them from your Home timeline.
To do this:
1. Log into your server's website 2. Click on Lists (on mobile it's an icon with three dots and three lines) 3. Click on the list whose contents you want to hide on Home 4. Click the slider icon in the top right corner 5. Activate the option labelled "Hide these posts from home"
(Note that this hides the chosen list's entire contents from Home.)

If you're creating custom emoji, remember to fill in the section marked "Shortcode" with a short text description of the emoji. Blind people's screen reader software will be able to read the shortcode aloud so that they can hear what the emoji is.
If the emoji's shortcode includes multiple words, split them up with underscores like_this or CamelCase, so that screen readers will be able to read each word correctly.
@feditips I often see the descriptive text instead of the emojis used by Styx, so I assume the custom made ones can only be seen on their instance of origin. Is that correct?
I'd like it if I could mute conversations I haven't been mentioned in too. Those are the ones I find more irritating. Esp'ly when they involve one of the super boosters whose content I often want to see but is currently boosting a whole thread of stuff I don't want to see ...
RFF's Mastodon account is now totally out of action, due to a major hosting problem which also affected their backups. This is not the fault of #RadioFreeFedi, but it has made it impossible for them to stay in touch with their followers.

@feditips Maybe someone can explain to me how this works? I thought if you publicly shared music on the internet, you had to have a license for the works being played? Unless RFF is just playing songs that are in the public domain?
A number of people have asked recently if there is livestreaming on the Fediverse.
Yes, there is!
The Fediverse has a dedicated livestreaming platform called @owncast. You can follow #OwnCast accounts from Mastodon etc and you will see posts from the accounts in your timeline when they start streaming.
Owncast has a built-in Twitch-style chat system which you can use either anonymously without logging in, or with an account from Mastodon etc.
If you want to run your own livestream you will need to set up your own server, because OwnCast doesn't currently allow servers to offer signups to outsiders. You'll need to be slightly techy to do this, but as installations go it is relatively painless. More info at https://owncast.online
