Welcome back! This is our fourth design critique thread. Today, we're taking a #ThrowbackThursday look at iPhoto for iOS, launched in 2012. Despite its short lifespan, it delivered visual design craftsmanship in spades. To properly understand this app, we have to set the stage: 1. The iPad was brand new when iPhoto for iOS came out — March 2012. Less than two years after it launched. Apple was still producing tons of glossy iPad apps to position the iPad as a capable — but more personal — computing device. So in this time, we saw iPad versions of their most popular apps. @lickability, in your research for this – once again – great thread, did you come across WWDC 2012 Session 243 “iPhoto for iOS – UI Progression and Animation Design”? (Could be where you have the graphics from.) Of the countless dub-dub videos I've seen, both live and on video, this stands out as one of the very best. Mind-blowing work! https://archive.org/details/wwdc-2012-sessions/%5B2012%5D+%5BSession+243%5D+iPhoto+for+iOS+-+UI+Progression+and+Animation+Design.mov of all the big tech companies, amazon has far and away the worst and most hostile UX. constant upsells, dark patterns, total roach motel trying to delete your account or unsubscribe from prime, the app is clunky, recommendations are awful, visual design is cluttered. YOUR AMAZON PRIME MEMBERSHIP WILL END ON MAY 24, 2024 shit, guess the tiktok forced-divestment bill just got signed into law. they've got nine months to figure it out before it gets banned. https://www.nytimes.com/2024/04/24/us/politics/biden-ukraine-israel-aid.html @samhenrigold HAHAHA, love it. I started watching the video he made that Gruber linked to. His voice makes me think of Snow Leopard :) lots of weird oversights while looking for a family member in the holocaust victim database. two highlights: 1. I, personally, would not design a system that assigns ID numbers to jewish people. 2. Who the fuck added Disqus in the record detail view. Who is expected to smash that thumbs up button on the death record for my great uncle

@samhenrigold sorry for necroposting but oh my god? this is so bad? why would you design a website like this and not hire any consultants for cultural sensitivity??? finally got around to watching zone of interest now that it's on HBO Max and good god it's phenomenal. it prob sucked for whoever was in charge of making phones at Bell Labs. @samhenrigold The Musical Instrumentation Laboratory of the Liberty Bell Company of Levittown, PA didn’t last very long I think the best possible outcome for the Apple antitrust stuff is if they have to sell a 500 foot spool of braided power cable so I can terminate my own MagSafe cables A couple people have PM’d me asking how I did the screen recordings on iOS 6. Strap in. 🧵 Preamble: QuickTime recording was added in iOS 8, on-device capture in iOS 11. Prior to that, there was no official way to screen record. My iPod is jailbroken, so I first looked at tweaks. They ranged from lost media, paid but the payment server was broken, or produced terrible quality. I tried a VNC server but I got roughly two frames/second. Then I tried Reflector, which acts as an AirPlay receiver so I could mirror the iPod to my Mac and record *that*. No dice on new versions of Reflector, but I *DID* manage to get it working on Reflector 1.0 from 2014. But it was wireless mirroring from a 2013 device, so the quality was quite poor. “microsoft mona lisa” yeah yeah whatever we hit the PEAK mona lisa AI nearly four years ago https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=324wf-o8Z_g Google Reorg Puts Android, Chrome, Photos and More Under Leadership of Devices Team this was a fun thread to write. btw, if you wanna screen record on iOS 6 at a remotely acceptable quality, it involves $100 of equipment, editing host files, and a Windows computer. i hope you find it was worth it:
[DATA EXPUNGED]
made something for my #nyc people https://www.icloud.com/shortcuts/25beea9406724382be7c047174824605 I could probably rip out the LLM usage in my endpoint, the only real work it’s doing is formatting those bin descriptions into something more palatable. Hm… |
