What's the relative message volume on #social media vs #messaging apps. Meaning Facebook / Instagram / Twitter / Mastodon etc vs iMessage / Telegram / Matrix etc.

How has that changed over time?

I am not sure I have ever seen numbers on this. Anybody know?

Thesis: the rise of small smartphone screens as the predominant way the world accesses information has had negative effects on the presentation and understanding (and toleration!) of complex, well-evidenced content.

It hasn't helped either that one can so easily stare at them 5sec at a time before swiping to the next thing in the middle of other activities.

I wonder what a thing like #VisionPro -- if ever cheap enough for most people -- with its promise of an "infinite canvas" will do.

@J12t this exact thought passed my mind last night. i am dumbfounded.

that said, doesn’t the misinformation problem get worse once you start literally augmenting reality?

"... activist organizations

individuals and potentially even foreign governments with ties to legacy media companies --
have embarked on a scare campaign to drive away advertisers from the X platform."

Scare campaign, huh. Masquerading! Unknown organizations! Even foreign governments, maybe! And oh no, legacy media companies!

Oh protect me, Saint #Elon!

Saint-Seans, Debussy, Bizet, (and I think a bit of Schubert) in one piece. Not something I ever expected to see. The marvel of recommender systems.

“Russia has transferred 4.8 million Ukrainians, including over 700,000 children, to the Russian Federation since the beginning of the war”

Let that sink in. Four point eight million. And this came from the mouth of a Russian official. Ukraine only had 36 point something million people before the war.

Why does lemmy.world have load issues at night? Is it a backup that runs, or ...? #lemmy

@J12t apparently they are facing issues again.

Take a master class from the worlds richest man who has created more memorable brands than most:

“‘X’ removed after being installed atop company headquarters following Twitter’s rebrand”

In other news, web forms are just about the least usable thing on the web. They have never been usable, and it's been 30 years, and they haven't changed a bit.

I just had to edit the DOM to hide an element that didn't let me get at the critical textarea control.

And never mind having some functionality by which I can take a long time editing a long web form without having to be constantly afraid that "something" might make my answers so far vanish.

Mr. Completely

@J12t fwiw making accessible web forms isn't really all that hard if you have the right tool set for it. This is my area of professional expertise. Far from disagreeing with you, I agree most web forms are dreadfully inaccessible; my point is that this is inexcusable, because making accessible forms just requires making that a priority and investing resources in developing the tools and expertise. So when people don't do that, it's a clear signal of their priorities.

Why does "delete this folder" often warn me that "it will delete all contained files" even if there are no contained files? It throws me off because then I have to re-check I'm actually deleting the right folder. Darn computers, darn #UX.

"To me, it feels a bit like the relationship between the industry and FLOSS communities has switched from being somewhat productive and occasionally abusive to being outright looting"

Good article by @baldur on changes in open-source. One nitpick: Sun's incredibly successful entry into the workstation market was based on an "open systems" proposition, long before there was the web. It was its secret sauce at the time where everything else was indeed closed.

@J12t @baldur This is a really interesting read, especially because I just finished "The Open Source Licensing War is Over" by Matt Asay, in which they argue that the terms of licensing and "open source" don't matter nearly as much as developer ease of access.

However, I suspect that will soon change. IMO the "war" is not over, but rather in an uneasy cease-fire. Open source software made the modern web possible.

@J12t @baldur Thanks for sharing this. Timely, and in light of an upcoming episode, relevant. Looking forward to giving it a full read soon.

I am expecting a large amount of money to enter the #fediverse probably starting next year. Driven by startups with #venturecapital.

Why? Because the investment opportunity of an open social network is simply too juicy to ignore. Most potential fediverse entrepreneurs may not know yet, but once #threads actually does #activitypub, it will become clear very quickly.

Love it or hate it, how are we going to prepare? Something I want to discuss at #fediforum. FediForum.org

As always with vc money they can spend the budget on marketing instead of technology.

@J12t
What sorts of revenue streams are they anticipating?

Internet Rando

@J12t

my question remains the same, how do i get some?? :D

I mean, (all) my instance(s) would be run as non-profit(s), but I'm still interested in the cash. =)

I'm so looking forward towards the EU's messaging #interoperability. Right now I'm using, on a daily basis: Signal, Telegram, Discord, Matrix, FB Messenger, iMessage, Mastodon direct messages and that's only what I remember. More on a more occasional basis. This is impossible.

Johannes Ernst

Reasonable piece on the fediverse from CBC: lemmy.world/post/2387987 with quotes and a nice big picture of a guy with a big mustache :-) /cc @evan

@J12t here comes the enshitification of the fediverse🤑

vagabond

@J12t these guys are fantasists, is that in real money or made up tokens?

Interesting to see the use of the word fedi and notice they only use nosta not the actual Fediverse.

More composting.

Johannes Ernst

How is it possible that CNN has a piece about all those social networking platforms, including BlueSky, but does not mention the #fediverse or #mastodon?

cnn.com/2023/07/30/media/threa

Mike

@J12t Omg and they mention Truth social in there 🤦‍♂️

Thomas Guyot-Sionnest

@J12t OMG... Truth.... Could've been ok if published by The Onion, but CNN, really???

Johannes Ernst

#Firefish, née #Calckey, has issues, unfortunately. Most times I try to use my account now on firefish.social there is something that goes wrong, or is too slow to be useable. Like right now. Refreshing the home timeline produces just internal errors.

It could be such a nice piece of software!

Johannes Ernst

Today it was cool enough in the closet that the #3D #print actually worked and didn't come off the plate, as it had done three times before.

Now I have a better webcam cover.

Found an old writeup of mine titled "The Open Revenue Model" that was trying to combine advantages of proprietary and open-source software models into something new. File last modified: May 2001.

I've been thinking about these issues for a long time.

Fenn Martyn

@J12t Might I inquire about your thoughts on the Commons Clause and other such licenses/clauses/addendums?

Thomas Guyot-Sionnest

@J12t it also depends on the targeted audience... MySQL (under Monty) and MariaDB are IMHO very good examples of a successful model, but it can't apply as easily to end-user software, and I think a end-user server application like Mastodon adds yet another level of complexity.

I've suggested before that social networking mbe provided by ISPs as standard service offering. That wouldn't prevent anyone from using a third party but could cover the majority of users and moderation work...
