I am expecting a large amount of money to enter the #fediverse probably starting next year. Driven by startups with #venturecapital.

Why? Because the investment opportunity of an open social network is simply too juicy to ignore. Most potential fediverse entrepreneurs may not know yet, but once #threads actually does #activitypub, it will become clear very quickly.

Love it or hate it, how are we going to prepare? Something I want to discuss at #fediforum. FediForum.org

@J12t my understanding is that it will be fairly limited #ActivityPub integration on #Threads.

Johannes Ernst

@trekman10 not an unreasonable guess. Or is there some hard data that you are referring to?

Trek

@J12t just a guess based on my own professional background in creative activities, of which R&D can sometimes be.

@J12t Hmmm, my gut says that the Fediverse is basically VC-uninvestable, because the core premise of all social-media businesses is that the users are locked in so you can stuff their inbox with ads and charge them for exposure.

[To be clear, I think this is a good thing.]

I see investment pitches all the time and I have yet to see anything Fedi-related. Maybe Iā€™m weird.

@timbray Agree the Fediverse investment proposition hasn't been articulated. I'm confident it will be šŸ™‚

Analogy: back in the 80's networks were proprietary. Then we got Ethernet as an open standard & arguably much more value was created (for investors & users) through the open network because anybody could connect & innovate, which they couldn't before.

But the basis of competition--networks vs adapters--changed dramatically. Same will happen here IMHO. Away from ads to captured audiences.

@timbray Clarification on the last sentence, I ran out of space:

I meant away from a captive audience that's being force-fed ads, to a variety of other models.

@J12t
As always with vc money they can spend the budget on marketing instead of technology.

@J12t
What sorts of revenue streams are they anticipating?

Johannes Ernst

@Cassandra Nobody is yet, there is no "they" yet. I'm merely having a strong hunch that by this time next year, all sorts of entrepreneurial people will have intriguing (albeit unproven) answers to those questions.

@J12t

my question remains the same, how do i get some?? :D

I mean, (all) my instance(s) would be run as non-profit(s), but I'm still interested in the cash. =)
