@gamingonlinux Wonder why they don't work with Valve and actually use SteamOS? Maybe SteamOS isn't ready for other devices, or they'd need to fund the porting (which is probably done by 3rd party contractors anyway)?

@gamingonlinux Nice to see some competition in form of a lower powered device with a cheaper price than the steam deck show up. I have a few friends who really only want to play indies on the go, but would like the modifiability and flexibility and pricing of a PC game with that, so I think this is a perfect device for that purpose!

Also super unrelated, but I wonder if some kind of "comment by Fediverse" on GamingOnLinux would be a possibility at some point. :)

@gamingonlinux I would love to see them optimize and fix the Linux version once the game is in full release.

Edit: Decided to relaunch the game today using the Linux native version and it worked great! I'm so stoked to play this now!

Update to the article on the S.T.A.L.K.E.R. game engine OpenXRay getting a DMCA on GitHub - it has been restored since GSC actually gave it their blessing gamingonlinux.com/2024/01/stal

@gamingonlinux I didn’t hear about this project until you posted about it being taken down. I love the S.T.A.L.K.E.R. series so I’m really excited this is back up!

Good reminder to mirror a repo to your local git instance if you run one :)

@gamingonlinux This suck, but understandable the reason, even I don't agree with all concept of intellectual property.

The one example I remember that have a good turn around was the game "Fighting Herds" that originally was a MLP fighting game that receive a "Cease and Deceased" from Hasbro.

I can't remember now if was the creator of show, Lauren Faust, that offer help the creator to make new characters because the game was good and would be a wasted throw everything away.

Ray Of Sunlight

@gamingonlinux Honestly, why not make something like in the spirit of Freedoom? But knowing the people that are TOO USED to TF2, they won't even try it because "the characters are different and the weapons are different" Blah blah blah, basically that.

Volume 2 slipped under the radar for me, but Bitwave did a great job on volume 1 if I remember correctly. Looking forward to this!

The article on the AYANEO NEXT LITE handheld with SteamOS Linux was updated, as AYANEO supplied a statement. They're using HoloISO - so this is not official with Valve gamingonlinux.com/2024/01/ayan

@gamingonlinux Calling it "SteamOS" likely infringes Valve's trademarks.

Also, no-one really trusts Aya to not screw up modifying HoloISO or to build their own AyaNeoOS they were previously working on.
Plus they're fast at dropping device support.

Saw the news about Valve doing a DMCA on Team Fortress: Source 2.

I'll say the same thing I always say: stop putting thousands of hours into making things with someone else's IP. At some point they will nuke it, like Nintendo do all the time.

Be original, be creative.

@gamingonlinux There's plenty of creativity to be found in exploring things that already exist in sometimes slightly, and somtimes wildly different ways. True "originality" doesn't exist.
I find this mentality of berating people for doing something they enjoy in the "wrong way" to be quite close minded. I understand why the laws are there, and I'm sure the developers here did too.
But when someone gets that spark to decide that something should exist, who are you to stop them?

@gamingonlinux Having to retroactively make original IP for a game sometimes even launches the largest gaming IPs in history.

Nintendo couldn't get rights to Popeye for a game and came up with a guy with a mustache that jumps to defeat a big ape… Mario & Donkey Kong.

Later, they had a character inspired by Peter Pan with music of Ravel's Bolero. They changed the lead and wrote original music… Link & Legend of Zelda.

@gamingonlinux when you say "malarky" i can't help it but remember joe biden on shreebington's channel xD

@gamingonlinux thanks, I actually use it to keep up with some news since I spent most of my day on WhatsApp either talking with vendors or friends

@gamingonlinux The F***, the embed's in Dutch. Probably getting figured out on the server-side, so it makes sense.

@gamingonlinux Oh yeah, I thought I remembered they had announced previously that they were working on their own custom Linux OS for their handhelds. SteamOS seems like the far more obvious choice if it's open source and it works for their hardware. Unless they want to eventually cram their own store in there or something.

Timothy Green

@gamingonlinux Well, THIS is interesting...! Surely, it won't replace the Steam Deck? 🤔

@gamingonlinux Sad news for Linux gaming. I just started playing League again because of Arena. I guess I have to waste my time with some other game.

My guess is that they would rather support Mac over Linux because Mac has more whales. (This is just a theory, according to some comment in reddit Linux had more players than Mac)

rzeczyspisane

@gamingonlinux great. Kernel level anticheat will solve everything guys trust me is safer. Wine is huge security issue

Danil

@gamingonlinux league become unplayable very long time ago many years ago, for some time there were some "hack" to still keep it working by patching wine and recompiling it - lots of fun.
But ye - no one care about 0.5%, corporations rush for profit and target only majority.

Liam @ GamingOnLinux 🐧🎮

Stop. Recommending. Tiny. Random. Linux. Distros.

Please. It's a never ending source of support issues. Especially for newer users. Get them onto something easy like Ubuntu.

@gamingonlinux Dying on the Fedora hill from this day forth. But I completely agree with the sentiment. Started with Ubuntu, tried Mint, Pop etc. Settled with Fedora and am happy, and it's easy to use.

The Tech 🐻

@gamingonlinux Someone recommended I start with Gentoo.

After the initial install things were fine for a month until they weren't again.

Learned a lot of new words that day.

ToxinVX

@gamingonlinux I made the mistake of putting a friend on Arch... He's willing to retry Linux because he's afraid of digital surveillance, and this time I'm just going to put him on Fedora KDE

Cassio Pereira

@gamingonlinux I love the fact that "Palworld" in portuguese sounds like "Dick World". This game will be an infinite source of dick jokes

Atleast they are making boundaries about AI generated content, it's like there boundaries about NFT games

Timothy Green

@gamingonlinux Not bad rules, actually. Very basic and not too restrictive. Basically, don't use AI to do anything illegal or disruptive. That's how it should be.

Eibriel

@gamingonlinux the announcement feels a bit lazy. They don't even say what AI stands for, let alone define what are they calling Artificial Intelligence (if it's that what they are talking about).

Shadows of Doubt should now be labeled as an "AI game" since it uses AI techniques to live-generate content?
