As many of you know by now I've been working on the #Fedipage project the past few days.

fedipage.com

One thing I dont like however is right now it locks you into Vercel as your deployment. However our dependence on it is rather minimal as we use it only to cover the serverless functions needed as well as some simple routing.

My fear is many may not be able to afford vercel or may not like them as an option. Does anyone know of a cheaper more FLOSS/privavcy oriented option that makes it easy to deploy typescript/java based serverless functions?

If I can find a good alternative I'd love to adapt the project to support Vercel alternatives.

So its done! I finally released a fairly easy to install (from scratch) Hugo based Static Site generator with full ActivityPub support.

It has step-by-step instructions on how to set it up for your own blog or static website.

One of the coolest features for me, other than having your static site blog posts show up as posts in the Fediverse is the support for interacting with those posts. Any replies you leave, likes, or boosts will show up in the "comments" section of the website on the page associated with the post. How cool is that!

#COVID tip: If you stop wearing under arm deodorant you will instantly know when you start showing symptoms of an infection as you will realize you can no longer smell your own BO.

This also has the added benefit of ensuring people keep the mandatory distance from you when in public.

just a friendly reminder typing " at " instead of "@" when putting your email down does **absolutely nothing** to protect your email. bots will recognize it just as easily and scrape it. The only thing youve accomplished to add more steps and waste the time of legitimate people trying to email you.

Dear Dr. Freemo: I utilize "at" so I can preserve someone's Mastodon Instance Address because when I send a toot, after the toot is sent, the entire address is no longer visible in my reply toot, also I believe that I am paying respect to the Mastodon Instance Administrator and Moderators who maintain the operations of the server that I am sending the toot to. I never change original email address information, only add the original Mastodon Instance Email Address omitting "@," so I can remember just which account and corresponding server that I am communicating with.

So people may consider what I doing as being strange, but writing out the entire email address as a salutation saves me time and helps me to again find the person on the correct server without having to utilize search.

Plus Salutation to me is more respectful to the person that I am communicating with.

Example: Now I am able to remember who you are and what server you are on.

Dear Dr. Freemo at QOTO ORG:

Sincerely, Monica Andrews, Editor-in-chief, #FreePeoplesFreePress News

So i spent a few hours guaranteeing 20 instances, and adding about 25 or 30 endorsements/censors/hesitations.

I love the idea and I think it has a LOT of potential.

Regardless I want to list it all here so the effected instances can be aware and if they wish respond/react. You can read my reason for endorsement of any of the below servers in the links provided.

I suppose this can also double as my #FollowFriday #FF !

Also please consider if you are an admin signing up and endorsing these and other instances as well.

So I found this cool new tool that looks like a very new take on the idea of a blocklist, not really sure I can even call it a block list.

gui.fediseer.com/instances/det

As I understand it it does a few things:

1) Only system administrators can get accounts, but users can view the data

2) a chain of trust which in and of itself only proves you arent a spammer. Anyone in the chain of trust can add other instances. Once an instance is in the chain then their admin can get an account and contribute

3) an instance in the chain of trust can add up to 20 other instances to the chain of trust. Should the instance loose their trust from their parent then the entire chain breaks including instances it trusted.

4) You can add endorsements.. this is stronger than adding someone to the chain of trust. It is a way of you saying "this is a good server" and explaining what features make them a server you endorce

5) You can censure instances too, these are instances you block and give reasons why.

6) there are also lesser categories like hesitations where you can list concerns but not suggesting blocking.

7) All this can be automatically populated from your instances black/white list if you wish. Or you can add entries manually

8) you get a little badge you can put on your servers about me that shows the number of endorsements you have live.

I do highly encourage everyone to check it out.

@freemo
It is the most stupid idea I heard in a while.

Your site is blocked for hundred of instances and STILL you recommend a stronger blocker.

There's a reason why our species still has trouble with COVID...

Alexey Skobkin

@freemo
It really looks cool.
We've finally got guarantee and I've spent some time spreading our guarantees and some endorsements too.

Also I've just wrote a feature request for it which I think could be useful for instances with more flexible moderation policies than usual:

Three facts:

1) I havent seen the barbie move

2) My feed is filled with people claiming white middle age men are outraged by the movie

3) I havent seen a single white middle aged man in my feed mention the movie even once.

Now I’m outraged about the lack of outrage. I’m also middle-aged and white, so there’s that.

Decided my keyboard needed cleaning so I went ahead and bought some keycaps for it while I was at it.

It cost me 300$ when I bought it since it is a custom made keyboard with all cherry mx green switches (you rarely find all keys in green). I personally love it and even more so with the new key caps.

How to pick a political stance.

Extermist Republican: 49% of people will hate you

Extremist Democrat: 49% of people will hate you

Moderate: 99% of people will hate you.

Just a reminder, Johnny Depp was canceled from every major movie franchise just on the accusation of rape with no evidence... Now that it was proven the rape accusations were lies how is Amber Heard's career doing? She is still scheduled to be in Aquaman and the Losr Kingdom. Double standards anyone?

πŸŽ“ Dr. Freemo :jpf: πŸ‡³πŸ‡±

Yes #QOTO has been emailed many times by people with money asking to buy influence. Im sure most large instance admins have dealt with it many times... i usually just ignore the emails, nothing new, move along.

I just want to say two important things..

First the recent school shooting is a tragedy and we should all be sad about the death of any children, especially as a victim of muder.

Second, we have to realize, for the sake ofperspective, how unfathomably rare it is for a child to die in a school shooting in america. It seems common because america is huge and the news makes this stuff public. But the numbers are more telling.

To put some numbers to it the chance of a child dyingin a school shooting in a public shool on any given day is 1 in 614 million. For comparison the chance of a person getting struck by lightening on any given day is **less** than 1 in 370 million.

In other words a child is more than **twice** as likely in the USA to get struck by lightening as they are to die in a school shooting.

Should we still mourne and be outraged by it... sure.. does that mean it is a problem that is common enough to be a huge concern... not really. We should probably put more effort into addressing the "lightening problem" than we should be about addressing school shootings.

@freemo what about the chance of a child being traumatized by a school shooting? Surely that's far higher.

SpaceLifeForm

@freemo

No. A child in a school is not likely to be killed by lightning because they are indoors.

Most fatal lightning strikes occur outdoors near trees.

Peter Drake, he/him, LFHCfS πŸ”₯

@freemo @trinsec A child is very unlikely to die specifically in a *school shooting*, but firearms (yes, including suicide) are the leading cause of death among US children and adolescents.

Thats like saying "fewer vaccines means fewer vaccine death", while technically true its also very poor logic. Sadly no, banning guns generally means more homicides overall.

Also who said anything about Canada. Sadly the body of the american data on this clearly disagrees with the assesment.

Andy Lowry

@freemo @protecttruth
I did not know that about banning guns = more homicide. What country or countries were studied for that result? Thanks!
