JFC. There is no way that I am sending my kid to a college campus that uses anything even remotely like this. https://edtechmagazine.com/higher/article/2024/04/how-robotic-dogs-could-protect-college-campuses @donni I'm am not entirely convinced about this. I suspect @the_etrain would be a good candidate for in depth research on this hypothesis. Oh man, this news story. Former MLA from Manitoba asks Meta's own "ask AI" chatbot if a phone number he found on Google is really Meta support. It tells him yes. It isn't, and he's scammed out of $500 and control of his accounts. https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/manitoba/facebook-customer-support-scam-1.7219581

@misty From the account in the article, it seems like Gaudreau was being careful and was trying to verify a telephone number from what he reasonably expected would be an authoritative source. This is absolutely Meta's fault. @Gargron Ah, my old stomping ground, my family used to go up there pretty often when I was a kid in the 70's, grew up in Santa Cruz.

To be honest, I still haven't seen any legitimate use cases for generative AI. All they have done with it so far is ruin search engines and make it much easier to spread misinformation and disinformation. AI is much more useful when trained to do one very specific thing really well. To me this all just feels like Web3 hype all over again. @harrymccracken I once asked Bing Bot for a list of books on a given subject. I then have it back the list, asking which ones exist. One of them it said it didn’t exist, with, as references to support its answer, the Amazon and GoodReads pages for the book in question. @harrymccracken I know it's not your fault, but I had trouble reading through the article with that uncloseable and un pauseable auto-playing video that remains at the bottom of the screen. It can be made smaller but it continues to play which to me is very distracting.

@neven yuuuuup. It feels to me that they don’t value the relationship we have enough to actually write an email (and request information atop that!). I have a friend, a ‘tech guy’ who had a virtual assistant for years. When he told me to shoot him an email to figure put when we should meet, that triggered the virtual assistant pipeline who basically took over the entire dialogue and interaction. I didn’t talk to my friend, I was relegated to a bot. Okay I knew Opera browser was bad but I had no idea how crazy the situation was until reading this.

I would have never used Opera due to it not being FOSS but it's always nice to have more reasons. @GossiTheDog Opera Mini for java phones will randomly redirect you to full-screen ads instead of whatever link you clicked on. I'd like to remind all Mastodon users that you can add a language filter to any follow relationship on Mastodon. If you follow me and you don't speak German, you can easily remove my German posts from your timeline by adjusting the language settings. Go to my profile page, select the dot menu and click "Change subscribed languages". Then select the languages that you speak. This really is a hidden gem 💎 on Mastodon and not many people seem to know this feature :awesome:

@gulovsen So none of them have seen Black Mirror METALHEAD ?
@gulovsen What the almighty fuck IS this bullshit? Are our kids unsafe EVERYWHERE? Why send your kids to a distant college if they're gonna risk getting shot by mistake? Keep them right nearby, you might get to see them before they die. This is so fucking FUCKED.
