I'd like to remind all Mastodon users that you can add a language filter to any follow relationship on Mastodon.

If you follow me and you don't speak German, you can easily remove my German posts from your timeline by adjusting the language settings.

Go to my profile page, select the dot menu and click "Change subscribed languages". Then select the languages that you speak.

This really is a hidden gem 💎 on Mastodon and not many people seem to know this feature :awesome:

#mastodon

Screenshot shows profile page context menu next to the subscription bell. Click "Change subscribed languages". A dialog opens.
In the pop up dialog, select all languages that you want to subscribe to.

@thomas wow... didn't know this is possible.

Wonder why anyone would use this though over the translate function ;)

Comunidad bahá´í de Mexicali

@maxheadroom @thomas is there a translate function???? I d. love to see what my German friends are saying...

John Gordon

@Bahais_Mexicali @maxheadroom @thomas I think Mona.iOS client doesn’t expose the language filter. I can’t figure translate in Mona either.

Uckermark MacGyver :nonazi:

@Bahais_Mexicali @thomas the Mastodon software has settings to connect to DeepL and then offer user to translate posts. Dunno if your home server supports this. Some mobile clients also use their OSs built-in translation engine.

Mark Ohe

@Bahais_Mexicali @maxheadroom @thomas

Click the post open
Click the 3 tiny dots in the upper right corner
Scroll to see if “Translate German” is listed
Click that

@maxheadroom @thomas
I don't think all instances have the translate feature. I don't have it (as far as I know).

Uckermark MacGyver :nonazi:

@Sarahw @thomas this needs to be explicitly configured. Maybe not all admins have done this as it requires a commercial license with DeepL for larger servers likely.

calsnoboarder

@maxheadroom @thomas I don’t think it works automatically. And a few extra buttons isn’t going to ruin my day but it certainly makes it easier to just not have those posts in my feed.

Angie

@thomas Cool feature, but I just scroll past posts I can't read. I don't mind seeing other languages on here, and it's a great reminder that this platform is international.

John Gordon

@ang6666 @thomas I’d love an option to see translation. Including where I paid per token for the translation. For now, doing this. Thank you.

kechpaja

@thomas How do I give people the option to do this for me? Viewing my account from another instance, I only see "English" in the equivalent menu — despite occasionally using other languages (so it's not just keeping track of which language tags the user has used).

Tom Tailor :damnified:

@kechpaja hmm maybe it also depends on your own language selection in your Mastodon settings (viewer perspective). 🤔 Not sure ...

kechpaja

@thomas I just figured it out and it's sillier than that: the languages listed in the "changed subscribed languages" menu are the ones used in some post _that has been loaded by the frontend_. I was only seeing English at first because all recent posts were in English; when I scrolled down far enough to see one in Finnish (necessitating the fetching of a couple more pages of history), Finnish suddenly appeared in the list.

I suppose I can live with that, but I would have done it differently.

kechpaja

@thomas (I'm using the web interface. I'm not sure how this translates into various apps.)

Maurice

@thomas @kechpaja If I remember right, there is a global setting for languages you want to see. I think this setting will influence the one on the user level. I guess most people set this when creating an account and forget about it.

kechpaja

@mauricerenck @thomas Yeah, that's probably true. I personally don't have a setting set there (I am a polyglot and like seeing various language on my feed, even if I don't understand everything a particular person says), but if you created your account and just set English or English + home language then yes.

Maurice

@thomas I like the idea to remind people that this is possible. I’ll probably create a note on my website and pin the info to my profile here. I already have the language info in my bio, but a short description on how to filter might be nice for new followers.

低端人口对北京人说给猪一个好名字

@thomas there should be automatic translation feature in mastodon rather than filtering… There should be no border in internet

synlogic

@civetkikyou @thomas agreed. their existing "controls" do not work. and wouldnt scale even if they were to work in an indiv case in isolation

preference option to allow endusers to autotranslate or translate-on-demand is the correct long term feature

ps. I'll gladly volunteer to jump in and implement it Fedi-wide *IF* professional pay budget avail for me to do the work (remotely)

🇵🇸 Álvaro González

@civetkikyou @thomas Some apps have such feature, but it relies on the language set by author when posting something. In your toot, for example, I'm offered to get a translation from Chinese.

Onur

@thomas This is actually one of the first things that made me “I’m not going anywhere!” when I first joined. It’s such a great feature.

Mirek Długosz 🕸️:python:🐛

@thomas

That's cool, thanks!

But doesn't seem to work if you follow someone who primarily writes in language you do not understand. For one person I follow, it shows only one language. So I can either select that language (which I do not know) and get posts in that language, or I can leave it unchecked and... get posts in that language 🙃 (because everything unchecked = subscribe to all).

synlogic

@thomas nope

doesnt work

I just checked and confirmed

and you're not first to think that and say it, haha. I get "deja vu" each time this point comes up in Fediverse

I cant block your German posts and even if I could make it work just for you uniquely it wouldnt work for others: current design does not scale

also

specifically, I configured my own Mastodon app and Fedi account with the preference that I ONLY want to see English posts. I did that many months ago. on my end

NEVER WORKS

Thijs van Ulden

@synlogic @thomas I tried this and found out the sender needs to tag the language, nothing is detected. senders do not tag (with the right language)

Angua :spinny_fox_disability:

@thomas@metalhead.club

Cool feature.

Not something that exists on Misskey.
But there's an option to translate on the dropdown so no worries.

Then again a lot of Misskey users are multilingual so this is essential as not everyone posts in multiple languages.

Jorge

@thomas oh nice. Does this work for boosts from the account too?

David

@thomas Thanks for the info. I'll keep the posts I can't read, however, because lots of them have pictures of birds, or trains, or both, so I can still enjoy them.

toybox [fr]

@thomas Haaaaaaaan
If only I had known before!

morgunkorn

@thomas very cool feature indeed! Thank you for the tip. I wish people overall paid more attention to the language they are writing in and the one selected for their post

ahimsa

@thomas Thank you! Very cool feature!

I was confused at first because the menu item only appears after you follow someone - which makes sense, I just wasn't thinking at first and wondered where the option was!

John Ulrik

@ivory This is not possible through the Ivory app, is it?

Ivory by Tapbots :emoji_wink:

@ujay68 this is something you would do from the website for now. Not sure if this is a new mastodon feature or not, but first time seeing it. 🙂

Desert Doggo

@ivory @ujay68 But Ivory has the sweet “translate” feature. So in this case, I can expand my world. Very useful.

Dr. Flowers

@ivory It’s been there all along. I have the filters turned on from the web, but it would be great to be able to do it from Ivory since I don’t use the web. Hint, hint. @ujay68

Thibault Molleman🇧🇪 🌈🐝

@thomas while this is cool, I feel like it's excluding content so i never use it. It'd much prefer to have automatic translations on any posts in languages i don't speak. But Mastodon doesn't have that yet...

Noodlemaz

@thibaultmol @thomas exactly. Or per old birdsite, at least a translate button so you can toggle.

I want foreign language posts in my feed, it helps me learn. I don't think having people opt out of the toot existing for them, vs scrolling or reading somehow, is positive!

Thibault Molleman🇧🇪 🌈🐝

@noodlemaz some of the Mastodon apps do have translate buttons. Like Fedilab for example.

And elk.zone (webapp) also has a translate button.

but none of them seamlessly translate it automatically @thomas

Alex Akers

@thomas As Lady Gaga once said "I don't speak German, but I can if you like" (aber ich spreche doch Deutsch 🤣)

baskin :kafeneio: 🐊

@thomas Of course users posting should honor the language setting of the post... A lot of them are not doing it.

Maarten Aertsen

@thomas I agree this is a gem! Would you happen to know if there is a way to extend this setting to boosts?

Daniel Lyons

@thomas That’s a super cool feature but I hope it becomes less and less necessary as on-device translation slowly improves. I’m not a fan of segregating the internet.

Velux ΘΔ

@thomas @Melody is that something that is automatically detected, or do you have to label the language of each post?

Gramshelper 🇨🇦😷🌻🏳️‍🌈🏳️‍⚧️

@thomas I prefer to just use the translate function. I am interested in hearing from people who speak other languages than mine.

Tom

@thomas I've tried this, but I've found it exceedingly rare that people tag individual posts with language. Usually they just tag their account.

DELETED

@thomas
The language function can also be found under
preferences > other.
Select the languages you want to see.

It doesn't happen to work for me though.

Joe

@thomas Unfortunately that only works if the poster who posts in two different languages correctly sets the language each time. Often it is set wrong and Mastodon offers to translate a post from, say, German into English but it is already English. So setting the filter would drop those posts.

Jonathan Wright

@thomas

Hmm.

I still get some languages other than my setting of English only.

Is this setting overridden by following specific accounts or hashtags?

Chuck

@thomas Wow, nice. I wish I could do this for hashtags.

calsnoboarder

@thomas Maybe it doesn’t work on the mastodon App? I have my settings set to only display English yet I get German, Dutch, Portuguese, and other language posts in my feed pretty regularly.

Marion 🌈🌻

@thomas Seems, it doesn't work on every instance. mastodon.social at least does not offer this feature.
But good to know some do.

Bealtaine Healy-Rae-Nua ✅️

@thomas Every day is a schoolday! Never knew that, it's brilliant!

TallVenti

@thomas I didn’t know this. But tbh I like to see the wonderful script of other languages.

To my monoglot eye it’s abstract art.

I’m particularly fond of Thai and Farsi script. Arabic has a swirly beauty. But the symmetric paragraphs of some other languages are a joy.

Is it just me?

#language

yianiris

I'd like your opinion for the ridiculous 500 character limit as default for most servers who use as an excuse the inability to change (or change permanently) this limit.

@thomas
#characterlimit #500characters

#nastodon 500 char. limit to:

dvo dvo

@thomas

maybe you have something interesting to say in your own language...

why miss out on that?

Cristina 🏳️‍🌈🇵🇹🇪🇺

@thomas maybe we could have that super cool feature for hashtag follows too #mastodon @Gargron
