@thomas How do I give people the option to do this for me? Viewing my account from another instance, I only see "English" in the equivalent menu — despite occasionally using other languages (so it's not just keeping track of which language tags the user has used).

@kechpaja hmm maybe it also depends on your own language selection in your Mastodon settings (viewer perspective). 🤔 Not sure ...

@thomas I just figured it out and it's sillier than that: the languages listed in the "changed subscribed languages" menu are the ones used in some post _that has been loaded by the frontend_. I was only seeing English at first because all recent posts were in English; when I scrolled down far enough to see one in Finnish (necessitating the fetching of a couple more pages of history), Finnish suddenly appeared in the list.

I suppose I can live with that, but I would have done it differently.

@thomas (I'm using the web interface. I'm not sure how this translates into various apps.)

@thomas @kechpaja If I remember right, there is a global setting for languages you want to see. I think this setting will influence the one on the user level. I guess most people set this when creating an account and forget about it.

@mauricerenck @thomas Yeah, that's probably true. I personally don't have a setting set there (I am a polyglot and like seeing various language on my feed, even if I don't understand everything a particular person says), but if you created your account and just set English or English + home language then yes.
