Bluesky Discord is in chaos as apparently anyone can tag everyone and nobody who can change it is online I'm terribly sorry for today's downtime. We are now back. Post-mortem: Yesterday my hosting provider, Hetzner, received an abuse report for our entire IP due to a user account that apparently was used as a botnet controller. I suspended the account immediately, but forgot to submit a statement to Hetzner. After 24 hours, the IP to mastodon.social was locked by Hetzner. I've reached out to them as soon as I learned of this.

We're talking about an account that was created through normal means, that is not really distinguishable from just any random account, but contains something like "hello 1.2.3.4|" in its bio. The way they seem to be used is that some botnet software checks the profile to get its commands that way. It is not a Mastodon vulnerability and I don't think its specific to Mastodon either. @Gargron Bluesky was announced in December 2019. It is now December 2021. The community Discord server is still arguing about what identity is.

@Gargron Kinda weird that they didn't just decide to adopt ActivityPub (which IIRC Jack Dorsey explicitly mentioned as an option when Bluesky was announced!) after *two years* of working on the topic. Assuming, of course, they're serious about the idea in the first place... I want to write about Web 3 being a total misdirection but it feels like such a chore explaining why.

@Gargron I remember seeing activitypub video where they were referring to the fediverse as either web 3 or 4.
@Gargron Ah well... at least you made me google it. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Web3 I agree, bad idea. Decentralized yes. @Gargron Yeah, the next web is going to be a war between blockchains and decentralized and open source.
Tolkien estate blocks JRR Token crypto-currency https://www.bbc.com/news/technology-59373968 @Gargron I seem to remember reading it, but it was a few eons ago. I may have to re-read it, and the other 6 in the series. 1. Foundation @Gargron Not to spoil things, but I found the first episode to be the highlight of the season.

@Gargron https://scp-wiki.wikidot.com/scp-3008 for when you wish to start fearing the IKEA store. There are some really amazing designs for the iPad version of our official app in the pipeline, but I'm afraid some scheduling conflicts in engineering mean they won't be implemented for the next few weeks. While the app is iPad-ready in a general sense, since the iPad version requires separate App Store screenshots it makes sense in my view to wait until all the screens are implemented properly to avoid having to re-do the screenshots. @Gargron Getting good screenshots is like the third hardest part of iOS development, I swear.

@Gargron I've been using a cast iron pan for 2 or 3 years, and have found it to be a better "non-stick" pan, given time to season, than the ones claiming to be that. No bits of non-stick stuff coming off either.

@Gargron well thanks for forever transforming my girlfriend's life by introducing her to djent @Gargron I have known this band for many years because of mutual friends and acquaintances... Just found their CD demo about a week ago and put it on repeat! Had to add a new custom emoji to express how I feel about all this #NFT nonsense :hurb:

@Gargron are you this bothered by all types of NFTs, or just the "jpeg" type? I'm wondering if you don't see any value in an decentralized, permissionless naming system (e.g, https://ens.domains/, https://unstoppabledomains.com/) which could be beneficial for the Fediverse. For instance, it would solve identity and account portability.
[DATA EXPUNGED]
I will need to do some database maintenance in, let's say, 15 minutes from now. There will be some downtime but I'll try to keep it as short as possible. I don't have a problem with most emoji short codes, but: 😄 smile bothers me a lot.

@Gargron ‘slightly smiling face’ may or may not be the weirdest description of an emoji, but it is the weirdest description of one that I see on a regular basis, typically in any toast notification I get with the description rather than the actual image. |
@Gargron Gargron that sounds pretty serious.
@Gargron Had to put the server on mute. There were too many spam messages at once on different channels.
First thing I do when I join a discord "server" is to turn off those broadcast mentions.
