I want to write about Web 3 being a total misdirection but it feels like such a chore explaining why.

@tomharris As always, there's non-technical people on the sidelines who could be duped by the web 3 marketing, and there's definitely value in distancing the Mastodon brand from that nonsense explicitly, so it's not entirely pointless to do it. It's just so hard to find the energy to reiterate points you implicitly understand from years of experience. @Gargron I guess it would be worthwhile making the case for "non blockchain decentralization" since decentralization is the key sell of mastodon, but that involves getting into the weeds about the nature of authority and ownership, which can get dry and doesn't have the buzz around it that wow blockchain web3 stuff does. I don't envy you that task @Gargron @tomharris maybe it could be a collaborative effort from us AP devs to spread the burden around. Present a sort of united alternative like, "hey look at all these apps that already do all the stuff web3 vaporware promises, and you also don't have to burn down a tree every time you click" @Gargron Stephen Diehl has been doing good writing on that topic eg https://www.stephendiehl.com/blog/disconnect.html tl;dr: block(chain)heads are trying to hijack the concept of the next iteration of web into their ongoing grift. @Gargron I remember seeing activitypub video where they were referring to the fediverse as either web 3 or 4.
@Gargron Ah well... at least you made me google it. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Web3 I agree, bad idea. Decentralized yes. @Gargron Yeah, the next web is going to be a war between blockchains and decentralized and open source.

@Gargron seems like it would fall on deaf ears tbh, it's a fandom at this point. you're not going to persuade true believers out of it
