Why did I decide to start working on something at 5am 😩

Laura Ritchie 🌸

@Gargron me too...

It's great to get stuff done! ...but hoping for a nap later....

"A Japanese research team said it developed a vaccine to remove so-called zombie cells that accumulate with age and damage nearby cells, causing aging-related diseases including arterial stiffening."

@Gargron
I wonder what David Sinclair thinks about this (gotta tell him)

@gargron This really reminds me of #AlteredCarbon, a bladerunner like show in the nearish future where the ultra rich basically live forever through expensive medical science while everyone else just tries to get by while aging and eventually dying. Great show, by the way, even if the future it depicts isn't...

@Gargron
TMAO has been shown to induce neuronal senescence(these zombie cells). I'm a firm believer that diet and lifestyle choices could wipe out 90% of our current medical problems. Wouldn't want to be the first in line for this.

I wish Apple made the translate function that's available when you select text also available through Swift so you could build a button for it. But in its absence, I wonder if it makes sense to add something like DeepL into our iOS app...

@Gargron I also wish you could get programmatic access to the image description engine that the advanced voiceover mode uses, so you could use it to automatically label images you post, since it is quite amazing.

Filed an issue about that, which somebody working on accessibility at Apple suggested, even though filing issues with Apple is the most frustrating experience ever. But supposedly, they do take filed issues into account when prioritising which features to make public APIs for.

3 separate e-mail addresses of mine, one personal, one for mastodon.online, one for mastodon.social, received identical e-mails from different people claiming to live in different places that are not California, asking about my process of responding to CCPA requests. New type of spam?

I've removed those who haven't logged in for 6 months from my followers.

@Gargron whats your thoughts/policy for those that havent logged in to their accounts for a long time?

Eugen Rochko

According to Elastic, Elasticsearch is not affected by the #log4j vulnerability. That would've been Mastodon's only exposure to log4j.

marian

@Gargron I have doubts. This repo github.com/YfryTchsGD/Log4jAtt lists ElasticSearch as affected and seems to show evidence. However it's not very detailed.

Π“Ρ€ΠΈΠ³ΠΎΡ€ΠΈΠΉ Клюшников

Thankfully Smithereen is also not affected in any way. I use slf4j for logging and most of my dependencies do as well.

Deadly Headshot

@Gargron I misread that as "Elastomania is not affected by the #log4j vulnerability", which I would hope to be the case anyway!

Eugen Rochko

The #log4j exploit is just wild. I do not understand why that behavior needed to be a thing.

@Gargron another incentive to stop using java, well, easier said than done.

@Gargron I bet some super smart person with access to the sources needed to do something and they decided to do it the way way.

@Gargron generally, developers design things to work - not to be secure. See this a lot across the board. The internet itself wasn’t designed to be secure.

Eugen Rochko

Have you seen a Mastodon post make rounds outside of Mastodon? If so, let me know which post it was, and where you saw it. If I get like, 5 of them, I'll add them to our blog.

@Gargron I made a post a couple months back about how Gmail scans copies of your emails and keeps records of your purchase history based on receipts and such that you have sent to your inbox. It was mentioned in an episode of "Surveillance Report" on YouTube and is still getting boosts and retoots when people watch their video.

I compiled highlights of the year for #Mastodon in 2021.

@Gargron
Mind sharing the code or method to aggregate yearly data?
It will be great to have such recaps across the fediverse!

I had the opportunity of listening to Devin Townsend's #Snuggles album on good speakers while falling asleep and let me tell you that was a magical experience

@Gargron Just got a chance to listen, good job!

@Gargron

this was great. I guess I'm glad you guys didn't dwell on instance blocking cause that would be off putting to potential new users, but am I the only one who thinks we're evolving on that front in a good way?

Eugen Rochko

Theoretically, I think someone could make a #MastodonWrapped, but I don't think anyone has...

@Gargron it would just be a look at all your old and possibly regrettable posts, add a little bit of light hearted sarcasm to roast the user and you have a really good concept!

@Gargron Lost In Space on Netflix is pretty good if you are looking for a another Scifi show to watch.

lunik1

@Gargron Is the original Cowboy Bebop on that list?

Eugen Rochko

New version of Mastodon for iOS is waiting for Apple review right now. It does *not* contain iPad support, which is not ready as I mentioned earlier, but we're bringing out multi-account support, loading character limits &co from the server and other small improvements.

@Gargron Are the new trending links implemented? :blobhappy:

(also, after the first ever batch of links, there are no new ones showing up in the mod panel.. like ever πŸ€” )

Eugen Rochko

Wait, new Devin Townsend album is out?

Nate Cull

@Gargron

is this one called Telepath and if you listen to it you are literally physically transported to the Moon

Eugen Rochko

My bad, two new Devin Townsend albums are out

@Gargron I think it's best to stick to progressive web apps.

@Gargron
When implementing cloud messaging, please consider using @unifiedpush - that way your users on Google can have their FCM, while those on F-Droid can pick the distributor of their choice (well, those on Play can, too). Thanks!

@Gargron why not collaborate with existing android apps such as @Tusky
