@gargron This really reminds me of #AlteredCarbon, a bladerunner like show in the nearish future where the ultra rich basically live forever through expensive medical science while everyone else just tries to get by while aging and eventually dying. Great show, by the way, even if the future it depicts isn't... @Gargron I wish Apple made the translate function that's available when you select text also available through Swift so you could build a button for it. But in its absence, I wonder if it makes sense to add something like DeepL into our iOS app...

@Gargron not sure if it's the same thing, but their developer forum said it might be available thru this api. https://developer.apple.com/documentation/vision/locating_and_displaying_recognized_text @Gargron I also wish you could get programmatic access to the image description engine that the advanced voiceover mode uses, so you could use it to automatically label images you post, since it is quite amazing. Filed an issue about that, which somebody working on accessibility at Apple suggested, even though filing issues with Apple is the most frustrating experience ever. But supposedly, they do take filed issues into account when prioritising which features to make public APIs for. 3 separate e-mail addresses of mine, one personal, one for mastodon.online, one for mastodon.social, received identical e-mails from different people claiming to live in different places that are not California, asking about my process of responding to CCPA requests. New type of spam?

According to Elastic, Elasticsearch is not affected by the #log4j vulnerability. That would've been Mastodon's only exposure to log4j. @Gargron I have doubts. This repo https://github.com/YfryTchsGD/Log4jAttackSurface lists ElasticSearch as affected and seems to show evidence. However it's not very detailed. Thankfully Smithereen is also not affected in any way. I use slf4j for logging and most of my dependencies do as well. The #log4j exploit is just wild. I do not understand why that behavior needed to be a thing.

Have you seen a Mastodon post make rounds outside of Mastodon? If so, let me know which post it was, and where you saw it. If I get like, 5 of them, I'll add them to our blog.

@Gargron I made a post a couple months back about how Gmail scans copies of your emails and keeps records of your purchase history based on receipts and such that you have sent to your inbox. It was mentioned in an episode of "Surveillance Report" on YouTube and is still getting boosts and retoots when people watch their video. I compiled highlights of the year for #Mastodon in 2021. https://blog.joinmastodon.org/2021/12/mastodon-recap-2021/ If you ask me, too much top content is still self-referential.

@Gargron I had the opportunity of listening to Devin Townsend's #Snuggles album on good speakers while falling asleep and let me tell you that was a magical experience I was invited on the Look Both Ways podcast, episode "Community Memory & The Decentralized Web" https://lookbothways.kinandcarta.com/community-memory-the-decentralized-web/

this was great. I guess I'm glad you guys didn't dwell on instance blocking cause that would be off putting to potential new users, but am I the only one who thinks we're evolving on that front in a good way? Theoretically, I think someone could make a #MastodonWrapped, but I don't think anyone has...

@Gargron I did for Pixelfed last year and users loved it! #Foundation joins the long list of TV shows where the opening sequence is much better than the actual show

glad to se that the yogscast is still alive and kicking well New version of Mastodon for iOS is waiting for Apple review right now. It does *not* contain iPad support, which is not ready as I mentioned earlier, but we're bringing out multi-account support, loading character limits &co from the server and other small improvements.
