@paul I refuse to believe Musk’s Twitter would use Optima. I would believe Comic Sans. Or, for some reason, Zapf Chancery.

@paul I made that exact observation some 20 years ago when I nuked all the cron jobs on our pet email server at school by slipping a tiny amount on the keys

Tom Harris

@paul totally agree, I’ve been bitten by that one too

Jean-Pierre Deckers

@paul hence my alias crontab='crontab -i' in my .bashrc , asks for yes/no when accidentally fucking up

This is just painful to watch. What did that poor phone ever do to anyone?

Max Handelman

@paul with keywords such as x, and uh Twitter.

Andrew Moscardino

@paul you just know he’ll be complaining about being censored in those results. I give it until next week.

manolo

@paul apps with actual real names have trouble, this sure as shit wont work out well

Paul Haddad :tapbots_logo:

Threads website is sort of live? Clean, but somewhat bare. One positive thing is the domain name right after the username. Looks like the Fediverse connection isn't just talk.

threads.net/@zuck

David Harrison

@paul Looks like the web UI is just for sharing of threads, though - it specifically says you need the app to like or reply.

Paul Haddad :tapbots_logo:

I’ve seen a lot of doom and gloom about Threads and the fediverse. I don’t personally have a problem with it. More people on the network is IMO better. No algorithmic timeline means you are still following who you want to follow, gatekeeping seems silly.

I look over at Twitter API land every once in a while just to see what craziness is happening. This week? They decided to remove the API that returns the following/followers for users. No notice, no comments, nothing. API stopped working, documents remove any mentions about it.

Is it a bug, is it on purpose? No one who knows is talking.

Imagine paying $100/5000/42,000+ a month for this.

Tony Bark :pawified:

@paul At what point does it stop becoming an API?

Paul Haddad :tapbots_logo:

The ghost of TwitterDev updated their change log (today, even though the change is dated 3 days ago) stating that the Following/Followers methods have been deprecated. Again no notice, no reasoning, no replacement, nothing.

Shuga :verified_deltadel: :kyawoo:
@paul They also mass-suspended image posting bots a week-ish ago. And didn't even block the ability to re-create the app, so it did absolutely nothing but kill bots whose owners didn't know any better.

This PCIe card is so quirky. Dual NVMe + 10GbE + dual USB-C all in one. Pretty neat little combo.

@paul Just add a raid controller there, and I’ll be happy :)

@paul Their Echo 11 Thunderbolt 4 Dock is great. I suspect this will be as well, and for the price it's good value.

@paul Мультикарта современная, только не ISA, а PCI-E.

Reddit this week.

What they should do: Step back, ask for forgiveness and announce “free" API access but only for their Premium sub. Would end the strike, increase revenue and still kneecap 3rd party apps.

What they'll probably do: Nothing.

What they may do: Something that’s really stupid.

What I have the popcorn ready for: Mass takeover of subreddits, followed by announcement of a move towards AI based mods.

Jason Ziccardi

@paul AI is expensive! I think they’d only do that if they exhausted all options to extract free labor from human moderators.

Flynn

@paul I'm also hoping for the last option because it will all but kill Reddit's value as a user.

Paul Haddad :tapbots_logo:

Pretty crazy deal on a pretty crazy looking mini PC. Big Time Capsule vibes. Just don't get super excited the shipping is expensive ($60 to US).

We never had the chance to shutdown Tweetbot but I probably would've made the same choice in Apollo's situation. For all of Twitter's 1.0 fault they weren't ever actively trying to kill us off. Sometimes they discouraged us, sometimes they encouraged, sometimes they ignore us.

Reddit is actively trying to get rid of 3rd party clients. No other way to view what's going on. You might be able to continue to plod along, but who the hell would want to?

I need to temporarily disable sleep on a Mac, obviously the place to do this is, checks notes, Advanced section of the Displays tab…

@paul As others have noted, Amphetamine is probably the way to go if you just want to handle the sleep thing. But if you also want other stuff to turn or off just as quickly, OneSwitch might also be worth a try. fireball.studio/oneswitch

@paul See also: I need to refresh my IP address…. *ten clicks later*.

Thor

@paul use Amphetamine for MacOS. Works great.

Paul Haddad :tapbots_logo:

Man at those speeds its almost tempting to just self-host a bunch of stuff and downgrade our hosted server. Not going to, but it sure is tempting.

MrClon

@paul i pay like $7 for 500 mbit/s. There is plan with 900 mbit/s and $11 but i'm ok with 500.
AFAIK no restriction for public service hosting, host something public at home for last 15 years

Paul Haddad :tapbots_logo:

Also my brain turned this into buck teeth Tweetbot and I can't stop seeing it.

Paul Haddad :tapbots_logo:

Twitter finally announced their “Basic" API access. Completely useless as expected.

Things of note:
They totally disabled access to the V1.1 API (probably because they had no one that could implement these limits on it).
The V2 Tweet Cap went from free 2M Tweets per month, to 10K Tweets per month for $100.
The rate limits on a bunch of calls have been slashed significantly.
The sign up link for the Enterprise API, you know the thing that costs $42k/month, is just a Google Form doc…

derek the solarboi

@paul hilariously, whenever I have to try to purchase a part for a Tesla solar system that needs repair, that can only be "ordered" through a Google Form as well. 💀

And I never hear back from them ever

Harrison

@paul I honestly can’t believe what’s happened to Twitter, but I’m glad mastodon (and ivory) are here

Григорий Клюшников

At this point they could as well not offer an official API and people who really need it would reverse engineer their way through.

Paul Haddad :tapbots_logo:

Starting May 15th, only verified accounts will be able to not follow my @elonmusk account.

The is the only realistic way to address my waning popularity. It is otherwise a hopeless losing battle.

Replying to me will require verification for same reason.
