RIP mozilla.social? "Scaling back investment mozilla.social: With mozilla.social, we made a big bet in 2023 to build a safer, better social media experience, based on Mastodon and the Fediverse. Our initial approach was based on a belief that Mozilla needed to quickly reach large scale in order to effectively shape the future of social media. It was a noble idea but one we struggled to execute. While we resourced mozilla.social heavily to pursue this ambitious idea, in retrospect a (1/2) more modest approach would have enabled us to participate in the space with considerably greater agility. The actions we’re taking today will make this strategic correction, working through a much smaller team to participate in the Mastodon ecosystem and more rapidly bring smaller experiments to people that choose to live on the mozilla.social instance."  @chrismessina I was toying with the idea to move to this instance.   @chrismessina I hope people tell them that they need to above all implement minimum moderation standards that stop the hate groups that are currently active on Threads. TIL what happens when reports of CSAM hit a federated instance of Mastodon — with implications for any platform hosted on an .xyz domain. Why would you not get in on that? what about the fact that a pair of messages was repeated this makes me think there are a total of six test messages on the entire platform Funny enough, this is what Biz Stone told me in 2007 when I pitched him the idea for the hashtag (which he rejected). I get it, but how would an LLM label #BlackLivesMatter, #MeToo, or #ArabSpring? Unless you don't want the people to self-organize?

@chrismessina They miss the point that gashtags aren’t just descriptors. They’re also intentions and they’re also emotions.  @chrismessina @mchris As if hashtag use doesn’t have deeply social and phenomenological meaning to those who label and those who seek out information and interaction based on said labels.  @chrismessina might not hurt to have a user-agent option that would bug you, "hey, did you want to put any hash tags on that?", along with "here's ones you subscribe to" and (MAYBE) "here's a few our stochastic parrot thought were likely". Great to see Flipboard add Mastodon and Bluesky support through their respective federated social web protocols!  @chrismessina @Sarahp @mike Ayo this is CRAZY. I've been hoping that we'd get "universal" clients that let people use the #Fediverse and #Bluesky at the same time. I didn't know we'd get such a client so soon. The only thing it's missing is #nostr support and then it'd be perfect  @chrismessina Interesting; I think this shows a marked difference in the internet discourse that men like engaging in vs. women. The difference is by about 15% in some cases, not always along party lines either!
