Well shit... Meta just entered the W3C Social Web Incubator chat:

"What can Meta do to support the fediverse? How can we ensure our entry to this ecosystem is a positive thing that helps grow the community? How can we support this standard? These are the questions in my mind, and I'm really keen to start discussing this with all of you."

@chrismessina Well that will be interesting heh heh 😶🧐🤔

Black Aziz Anansi :vm:

@chrismessina The last thing that I want to see is the boy from Boy Meets World trying to take over the Fediverse.

@chrismessina “What can Meta do..?” Turn on ActivityPub support already. WordPress has support. Joomla has support. Discourse has support. It ain’t rocket science!

@chrismessina New twist on Ronald Reagan's old joke:

The eight most terrifying words in the English language are: "I'm from Meta and I'm here to help!"

Evan Prodromou

@chrismessina Well, actually... it's the Social Web Community Group or #SocialCG.

Evan Prodromou

@philip @chrismessina It used to be an incubator, and then it became a working group, and now it's a community group. Fair enough, though.

@irwin @chrismessina The last company to use that deleted the word “don’t”.

@chrismessina i thought the horror was a dog full of maggots, but now I know better 🤢

Dear Zuck,

Hey Meta/fb/Facebook pay up your $780 MILLION damages for selling our data to russian hackers.

We're good in the fediverse without fb cut throat poffering of private data.

Elmo was looking for you. Bye-bye

@chrismessina Wow he's come a long way from Boy Meets World. 🤔

Assigning someone to this kind of work is expensive; they're not kidding around. I bet Mr. Savage will soon offer to host meetings.

@chrismessina I mean, not acting like Meta would be a good first start…

@chrismessina if you listen to @HackerRadioShow, @thegibson expressed a desire to block threads.net AND any instance that doesn’t block threads.net, just so nobody on there can see any content from hackers.town.

To me this is anti-open. If you can follow your friends on threads without joining threads, that also gives them the ability to leave the walled garden. Sure, it’s Eternal September, but such is life. Maybe a local-only post mode will come soon.

I stand by my words.

I don’t play well with threat actors.

Art Nouveau Appreciator

@tom @chrismessina @HackerRadioShow Tom, do you think that @thegibson is doing that without input from hackers.town denizens? There were several days of discussion so don’t pretend that this is some sort of unilateral dictatorial action - this is the will of the community

'Spooky' John

@Jetengineweasel @tom @chrismessina @HackerRadioShow @thegibson Hell, it's what assured me that I chose exactly the kind of community I've been looking for.

Tom :piss:

@Jetengineweasel @chrismessina @HackerRadioShow @thegibson I don’t recall the discussion being mentioned, but it’s a very short show and so there’s not a lot of room for detail it seems. I am not against it, just really bringing up that there’s already a planned netsplit for when they federate threads.

Tom :piss:

@thegibson @Jetengineweasel @chrismessina @HackerRadioShow we aren’t enemies, I hope that it’s not taken as hate or anything.

@tom @Jetengineweasel @chrismessina @HackerRadioShow

I just wanted to clarify our position… no hate.

We are passionate over here… that’s all.

Art Nouveau Appreciator

@tom @chrismessina @HackerRadioShow @thegibson I also wholeheartedly disagree that it’s “anti-open”. We’re free to be ourselves because we have a community that’s built on mutual respect rather than microtargeting ads for the worst political scum in the country. Anyone is welcome to join us, they just have to abide by two rules in the social contract: no Facebook and no nazis

Edit: and yeah please don’t read this as an angry diatribe, I’m just passionate but you’re cool

The Gibson

@tom @chrismessina @HackerRadioShow

Also, this is not exactly my position on the matter.

We are blocking all fb owned domains, and monitoring new domains they register to block them.

The fediverse operators have decisions to make due to the nature of federation.

Ultimately this will have the likely outcome of a netsplit.

Also, we have local-only on hackers.town… it doesn’t change anything with my core assertion that willingly giving FB your data is a bad idea.

Blocking abusive entities is how admins and moderation should act.

@thegibson @chrismessina @HackerRadioShow you’re welcome to do it, it’s your instance! I listen while on the road so I tried to limit my toot to the bare minimum facts, the only concern I had is the blocking servers that don’t block Meta. That’s gotta end up being a huge number!

I got my server blocked by mastodon.sdf.org when I mentioned that the Palmer Report misunderstood how instances work, and got banned from SDF themselves. bonequest.net/@tom/10931734409

You don’t share the same metrics of value that we have, and that is ok.

We do not seek growth or reach.

We seek a better community experience.

Facebook brings us nothing but pain, as shown time and time again.

They don’t get to re-establish trust.

So just as one person who lives mostly on hackers.town, I'd argue that it sucks far more that everybody is just chill with letting one of the greatest villains of corporate history just move in next door with seemingly little complaint. I don't really see any difference between threads and any of the instances on Oliphant's bare minimum block list. If an instance is going to show up and bring on all kinds of nasty hate speech and whatever else, then we block them and everyone that talks to them, because that's how we keep that stuff out.

And that's leaving aside all of the privacy and security questions of allowing a giant company whose entire raison d'etre is stealing your data and using it against you.

@mav @chrismessina @HackerRadioShow @thegibson from what I’ve seen (granted, little) it’s a lot less toxic than #birdsite at the moment. I also have seen some posts on #threads asking what the mention of the “fediverse” means, and that is such a great opportunity to get people off of it. Like starting with AOL then moving to a real provider… like mindscape.

mav :happy_blob:

@tom @chrismessina @HackerRadioShow @thegibson If I'm honest, I haven't even looked at Threads - but I've spent a LOT of time on Facebook. Assuming their moderation is functionally equivalent, Facebook openly, intentionally allows white supremacy and bigotry (though I'd stop short of saying they actively encourage it, ala birdsite.) Allowing those things openly should get them defederated immediately from all but, say, the people on the Oliphant extended blocklist, and Meta's close friends, the free speech absolutists a la Qoto. So it's not like people on Threads are gonna have a lot of places to go where they can still talk to their friends on Threads. Like @thegibson said, this is a netsplit, that was unavoidable the second they said they were coming here. We know that they do not and will never share our values. 🤷‍♂️ So we do the one thing left to us.

@chrismessina I have not been on the chat for a while, but I remain on the mailing list because of my involvement in Aardwolf-Social.

A week and a half ago there were a bunch of folks discussing this, and actually chose to leave the group because FB Meta was joining.

@chrismessina
Tbf, meta (aka facebook) already does a lot of open source development. It created react, which is just huge and used by a ton of websites. It created Zstandard (aka zstd), which is a really well made compression format. They contribute to the Linux kernel etc. etc.

I understand the scepticism, but past open source projects don't really show issues. They have a pretty decent track record when it comes to open source so better watch and see instead of instantly dismissing it.

Option A: cease to exist.

Option B: in case option A cannot be achieved. Absolute perfect implementation of the protocol, strong guarantee that remote and local data are treated differently (not monetized, not sold to data brokers), at least decent moderation (ban libsoftiktok for God's sake!).

@chrismessina I hope people tell them that they need to above all implement minimum moderation standards that stop the hate groups that are currently active on Threads.
