@chrismessina if you listen to @HackerRadioShow, @thegibson expressed a desire to block threads.net AND any instance that doesn’t block threads.net, just so nobody on there can see any content from hackers.town.

To me this is anti-open. If you can follow your friends on threads without joining threads, that also gives them the ability to leave the walled garden. Sure, it’s Eternal September, but such is life. Maybe a local-only post mode will come soon.

I stand by my words.

I don’t play well with threat actors.

@tom @chrismessina @HackerRadioShow Tom, do you think that @thegibson is doing that without input from hackers.town denizens? There were several days of discussion so don’t pretend that this is some sort of unilateral dictatorial action - this is the will of the community

@Jetengineweasel @tom @chrismessina @HackerRadioShow @thegibson Hell, it's what assured me that I chose exactly the kind of community I've been looking for.

@Jetengineweasel @chrismessina @HackerRadioShow @thegibson I don’t recall the discussion being mentioned, but it’s a very short show and so there’s not a lot of room for detail it seems. I am not against it, just really bringing up that there’s already a planned netsplit for when they federate threads.

@thegibson @Jetengineweasel @chrismessina @HackerRadioShow we aren’t enemies, I hope that it’s not taken as hate or anything.

I just wanted to clarify our position… no hate.

We are passionate over here… that’s all.

@tom @chrismessina @HackerRadioShow @thegibson I also wholeheartedly disagree that it’s “anti-open”. We’re free to be ourselves because we have a community that’s built on mutual respect rather than microtargeting ads for the worst political scum in the country. Anyone is welcome to join us, they just have to abide by two rules in the social contract: no Facebook and no nazis

Edit: and yeah please don’t read this as an angry diatribe, I’m just passionate but you’re cool

Also, this is not exactly my position on the matter.

We are blocking all fb owned domains, and monitoring new domains they register to block them.

The fediverse operators have decisions to make due to the nature of federation.

Ultimately this will have the likely outcome of a netsplit.

Also, we have local-only on hackers.town… it doesn’t change anything with my core assertion that willingly giving FB your data is a bad idea.

Blocking abusive entities is how admins and moderation should act.

@thegibson @chrismessina @HackerRadioShow you’re welcome to do it, it’s your instance! I listen while on the road so I tried to limit my toot to the bare minimum facts, the only concern I had is the blocking servers that don’t block Meta. That’s gotta end up being a huge number!

I got my server blocked by mastodon.sdf.org when I mentioned that the Palmer Report misunderstood how instances work, and got banned from SDF themselves. bonequest.net/@tom/10931734409

You don’t share the same metrics of value that we have, and that is ok.

We do not seek growth or reach.

We seek a better community experience.

Facebook brings us nothing but pain, as shown time and time again.

They don’t get to re-establish trust.

So just as one person who lives mostly on hackers.town, I'd argue that it sucks far more that everybody is just chill with letting one of the greatest villains of corporate history just move in next door with seemingly little complaint. I don't really see any difference between threads and any of the instances on Oliphant's bare minimum block list. If an instance is going to show up and bring on all kinds of nasty hate speech and whatever else, then we block them and everyone that talks to them, because that's how we keep that stuff out.

And that's leaving aside all of the privacy and security questions of allowing a giant company whose entire raison d'etre is stealing your data and using it against you.

@mav @chrismessina @HackerRadioShow @thegibson from what I’ve seen (granted, little) it’s a lot less toxic than #birdsite at the moment. I also have seen some posts on #threads asking what the mention of the “fediverse” means, and that is such a great opportunity to get people off of it. Like starting with AOL then moving to a real provider… like mindscape.

@tom @chrismessina @HackerRadioShow @thegibson If I'm honest, I haven't even looked at Threads - but I've spent a LOT of time on Facebook. Assuming their moderation is functionally equivalent, Facebook openly, intentionally allows white supremacy and bigotry (though I'd stop short of saying they actively encourage it, ala birdsite.) Allowing those things openly should get them defederated immediately from all but, say, the people on the Oliphant extended blocklist, and Meta's close friends, the free speech absolutists a la Qoto. So it's not like people on Threads are gonna have a lot of places to go where they can still talk to their friends on Threads. Like @thegibson said, this is a netsplit, that was unavoidable the second they said they were coming here. We know that they do not and will never share our values. 🤷‍♂️ So we do the one thing left to us.
