I love Digital Ocean ❤️

I ran into some unexpected financial issues in late June and was able to work with them until my banking issues were resolved

They never terminated or shutdown my servers due to lack of payment, and I'm so thankful for their understanding!

Use the link below to get a free $200 credit on Digital Ocean and to help fund @pixelfed server costs

That's nice to them, one bad thing about OVH is you miss your payment and they put up the firewall the same minute 😂
dansup

@pixelfed I want to mention that it was a fluke banking error that caused this, you don't need to worry about the stability of our services, and just to be sure, we are working on setting up a standby on another provider.

It's not a bad thing to have backups and a fallback strategy 😅

🌟 @pixelfed + piefed

Pixelfed Groups are here (thanks to funding from @nlnet) and I'm working on adding support for Piefed too!

You can expect a blog post explaining how to enable and use this huge new feature in pixelfed, later this weekend ✨

@dansup Will this support the Wall-to-wall groups model à la smithereen ?

tommy

@dansup have you written a blog post? Apparently not on pixelfed.blog/ anywhere else?
Thanks for your work.

Imagine being able to create, share and subscribe to blocklists that auto update when the blocklist author adds/removes entries.

Sounds too good to be true eh? ✨

@pixelfed I think the ability to report abusive blocklists would go along way to make them more practical though.

Fish Id Wardrobe

@pixelfed Sounds like a recipe for pileons to me. Time and time again we see bad actors getting control of blocklists.

Owen

@pixelfed Seems very interesting! I am trying to build a blocklist app too! Would love to have a chat!😀

@dansup @pixelfed It'd be great if these features got adopted into #mastodon !

Please I'm begging you, dark mode needs to make a comeback 🙏🏼😭

Edit: This requires some careful thought before proceeding, I'm thinking we could provide an option to recycle the username during deletion, or reserve it for the original account creator for 90 days. Safe to say, I haven't decided yet!

I get a lot of requests for people wanting to re-join pixelfed.social after permanently deleting their account.

Maybe usernames should be re-usable after a period of 30 days.

@dansup I just wish I could use the pixel fed android app to post photos, but it says pixelfed.social is running an old version of the software 😔

Crimperman

@dansup blocklists are a good example why reused usernames could cause difficulties.
A new user may find themselves on one or more blocklists without knowing why.

@dansup @pixelfed Guess it depends on impersonation as a threat vector.

@pixelfed this presentation looks quite cool! How was this called & how did you create it?

@pixelfed Also do feel free to suggest more improvements or call me out on specific problems and I will do my best to prioritize and accommodate your feedback and requests granted they are reasonable and actionable!

As developers, it’s our responsibility to take a proactive approach to safety and moderation, and while I don’t have the resources that some other projects do, I have dropped the ball in this regard so I’m focused on improving this in Pixelfed and would love your feedback!

@dansup @pixelfed only two words: PUSH NOTIFICATIONS

Qazm

@dansup Do you have documentation on the details of comment control yet? Is it only automatic-allow for specific groups or does it support an interactive mode where e.g. the comment can be submitted, but interactive approval is required (according to some filter)?

Something that I think would help *a lot* with connections to less moderated huge instances would be to set a first-comment(s) approval mode for them: If someone comments/replies from such an instance, those comments are collected and can be allowed/rejected by moderators in a view that shows their overall comment history. Plus a button to approve the commenter in general.
This could also be combined with a word/phrase filter to require manual approval, with the same option to exempt accounts.

I'm aware this would need a lot of UI, also to communicate that a made comment is 'pending approval' or something like that, but it could fix the 'whack a mole' problem of purely reactive moderation when connecting to large instances as a small instance.

Do take care of your own welfare. You deserve safety too.

If users have requests for improvements they can present them quietly and patiently.

This is why @pixelfed has the best in-class detection and mitigation, and the tech we use isn't new or fancy!

I registered a bunch of domains for ActivityPub back in the day, and want to put them to good use one day.

activitypub.bio
activitypub.group
activitypub.guide
activitypub.info
activitypub.io
activitypub.network
activitypub.social

I'm not interested in selling, but may consider transferring to an established and trusted entity, otherwise I'm down for using them in various ways for community oriented resources, services and utilities. 😎

dansup

If you are interested in collaborating on a fediverse related resource or service using one of these domains, and you would be willing to be a project manager, do get in touch!

We can make it a community affair, and encourage contributions from across the fediverse!

@dansup "activitypub (.)network" would be a great lemmy server!

@pixelfed And please don't forget about that, that most of the displays, monitors used today are in the landscape position! People doesn't need too much free, unused space on the both sides of the screen. This space should be fully used and filled with the useful things, options etc. You know, no one wants to have tons of empty, wasted spaces around the main feed. The less of them, the better usability experiences are. 😉👍😘

@pixelfed would it be configurable by the instance?

We even wrote a simple tool to convert Mastodon blocklists to Pixelfed format and vice versa!
