@taylorlorenz When you're drowning, your panic causes you to grab onto whatever floats your way. Of course if it's a person and they're not a lifeguard, you may cause them to drown too. In this case, one can only hope.

@taylorlorenz Professional athletes are prohibited from betting on their own sport, but somehow lawmakers are allowed to own stock in companies and options that they directly influence...makes sense

"Any social media platform that dips under 10% poster will fail, but as the early days of Bluesky demonstrated, if you over index on posters, you will have endless fucking chaos. It is possible that posters are deeply unwell. Certainly they are far too online." https://www.theverge.com/24058356/trolls-social-media-commenter-lurker-reply-guy-threads

"Posters generate Discourse; reply guys and commenters continue and refine it; finally, influencers and Brands capitalize on it. It is possible, though rare, for reply guys, commenters, and influencers to generate Discourse, but the point is: someone has to kick it off and usually that someone is the person with the least inhibitions." https://www.theverge.com/24058356/trolls-social-media-commenter-lurker-reply-guy-threads

This is a good piece on the major issues tiktok is facing and how a lot of their problems are self inflicted https://gizmodo.com/tiktok-is-destroying-itself-from-the-inside-out-1851227491

@taylorlorenz https://www.wired.com/story/tiktok-platforms-cory-doctorow/ Surpluses are first directed to users; then, once they're locked in, surpluses go to suppliers; then once they're locked in, the surplus is handed to shareholders and the platform becomes a useless pile of shit. From mobile app stores to Steam, from Facebook to Twitter, this is the enshittification lifecycle.

Massive study analyzes 23 million headlines from 47 news media outlets in the US from 2000-2019. They find that over this time period, headlines became more likely to denote anger, fear, disgust and sadness and less likely to be emotionally neutral. Headlines from right-leaning news media were consistently more negative than headlines from left-leaning outlets as well.

“It is just over,” journalist @caseynewton told The Post. “If you wouldn’t join Gab, or Parler, or Truth Social, there’s no reason you should be on X. I think it’s time for journalists and publishers, in particular, to acknowledge the new reality and to get the heck off that website.”

"Our goal with Threads is to make social content as interoperable as email. We are working on the ability for Threads to integrate with ActivityPub, the open, decentralized social networking protocol. Once that happens people will be able to enjoy the best features of Threads across platforms." https://engineering.fb.com/2023/09/07/culture/threads-inside-story-metas-newest-social-app/

@taylorlorenz That's some real "let's all get together to see the MMO servers go down" energy. Only seeing Twitter from the crossposting peephole creates such a weird impression of it, which I'm guessing is not entirely accurate, but really conveys a mood. |

@taylorlorenz @kcarruthers so this will be what finally kills off commercial journalism, companies devaluing writers to the point where they are willing to publish mush written by robots instead
