@taylorlorenz wired.com/story/tiktok-platfor Surpluses are first directed to users; then, once they're locked in, surpluses go to suppliers; then once they're locked in, the surplus is handed to shareholders and the platform becomes a useless pile of shit. From mobile app stores to Steam, from Facebook to Twitter, this is the enshittification lifecycle.

@chx @taylorlorenz steam doesn't have shareholders and it is in better shape than ever. I've been using it since 2006. If you want to, can you elaborate on how it is like Facebook and Twitter?

Not talking about steam's financials, but their product is definitely being enshittified: spawning two advertising windows when you start a game, grabbing the cursor focus *three* times when you shut down steam, and though I haven't checked in a while, no option to search for games by OS. Also, on mac when you shut it down it leaves an "ipcrelaytool" background process running that auto-restarts even when you manually kill it. Also, no option to automatically quit steam when you quit the game.

That is one enshittified platform.

@artemesia @chx @taylorlorenz I don't know if the mac version is different than windows but it doesn't open popups when launching games, only when opening steam for the first time. You can also tweak settings to close it definitely. Also the search by OS has been in there for at least 8 years.
