I'm seeing a lot of mention spam from multiple instances, as a user it's annoying but as a developer I understand the complexity of dealing with spam #hugops to all admins dealing with this, and I hope other admins hold off on defederation to give admins time to deal with this mess These attacks only make our network more resilient, and cooperation between projects is essential to long term mitigation

I guess we have different opinions. Consent based messaging isn't complex.
Welcome to the party. Are you on the guest list? 200. No? 403. https://fediversity.site/item/824d02bb-52cb-46b8-923c-0d7db0da35e1 Laughs. 45 million users. 3.5 billion spams a day. You were still in diapers. Suit yourself.
Spammers will spam anything they can post to and not get rejected. They'll spam a password prompt fercrysake. Don't leave anything open that an unknown/unwanted person can post to, because they will. Blog trackbacks? (Which bypass moderation). I've cleaned up 1/4 million spams at a time from those until I turned them off. I hate spam. Hate. Hate. Hate. That's why I got rid of it. You can too.
Looks like a spam wave is underway from a self proclaimed "low-moderation" misskey server @dansup I will admit, the warning label shown to server admins is pretty annoying, definitely motivates me to get rid of it faster. The new @pixelfed app build (v44) is rolling out to TestFlight users! I wasn't able to get Push Notifications or Share Extension support included as I've been busy with the recent backend release. Be prepared to update again soon, push notifications are literally hanging by one last thread (me setting up a proxy server... I want to write my own but may have to borrow one from our big bro Mastodon)

@dansup @pixelfed Could you use one of the bridging services? Mastodon's uses an outdated specification version & it's difficult to upgrade, see: https://github.com/mastodon/mastodon/pull/26496

@dansup (A Mastodon-style feature for prominently announcing security updates on the admin page could be a great addition for the future too...) Dubstep won a Grammy 🔥 And Skrillex made a really good speech, check it out skees! Seriously though, being a fediverse developer is challenging, but y'all make it worthwhile. I make mistakes sometimes, but your feedback is what saves the day. "He just some Steve Jobs obsessed tech bro" "Where the fuck is Sup?" "I heard he doesn't brush his teeth" I've heard it all, and I appreciate the criticisms just as much as the complements. Y'all keep me grounded and remind me that I'm building @pixelfed for the people, you people, and you really shape the direction of the project!

@dansup The more you impact the world, the more supporters but also detractors you get. I think that all famous people get bullied at some point, especially on social media. That's not good obviously but it's also important to focus on your goals, ignore nasty behaviors but continue to welcome constructive comments, positive or negative. Keep the good work 😝 Someone recently suggested a new @pixelfed timeline based on remote posts from only Pixelfed servers. This has me intrigued. We have everything required to make this possible, the only thing missing is my approval. So guess what I'm working on atm, trying to quickly implement this to include in the new app build due out any day now. This is what I love about :pixelfed:, your ideas and feedback help shape our project and ideas like these are crucial to our success. Keep the ideas flowing ❤️ 58% of all Pixelfed users are on instances that have updated to the latest version (v0.11.11) that contains an important security bugfix. Keep in mind this version was only released 5 hours ago. Great job :pixelfed: admins! Edit: We're back, after only 25 minutes of downtime! Pixelfed.social will be undergoing maintenance in about 25 minutes, and the service will be temporarily unavailable. We're expecting the upgrade to take 30-60 minutes. 🚨 Pixelfed admins: please update ASAP to v0.11.11 More information will be published on Feb 25 to give admins time to update. https://github.com/pixelfed/pixelfed/security/advisories/GHSA-gccq-h3xj-jgvf

Added a new `app:instance-manager` command to Pixelfed! You can use this to re-calculate stats, ban/unban or unlist/relist instances! https://github.com/pixelfed/pixelfed/pull/4902/commits/6921d3568e7662b55268a0b2ab5799758735b74a I also shipped some API updates that enforce these banned domains across various endpoints! I'm also working on a whole new Instance section on the admin dashboard, it will be much easier to manage instances and users! Some people assumed the hashtag follow bug was an indication of a switch to an algorithmic home feed and let me just say, I would never do that without some form of warning and community consensus. It's a bug. |
@dansup @pixelfed Autospam? :thisisfine:
@dansup @pixelfed Hey, I just wanted to shout a big THANK YOU! to you for all the energy, engagement and time you put into all this. 🙏
