The "weird” strategy was laid out by a genius long ago

Quote: “Mel Brooks was once asked how he, as a Jewish man, was able to make so many silly jokes about Nazis. He said that evil people enjoy being portrayed as villains, but they detest being made out to look like fools”

@bojacobs And by Moishe Horowitz even longer ago. You probably know Horowitz by his stage name, Moe Howard, who was the first actor to play Hitler on film in a satire.

Bo Jacobs

@AlgoCompSynth And Vaudeville as a whole. Plus, on film, this was the core of the Little Tramp schtick.

The problem is: we now know that this tactic wasn't enough to actually solve the problem.

I think maybe I'd rather not take all my advice on this issue from well-to-do entertainers, given that they enjoy a level of protection that most of us never have, and never will.

Maggie Maybe

@xenophora @bojacobs @AlgoCompSynth no this actually does help. These bigots think they are righteous in their outrageous behavior, and the theatrics of it all attract people with little substance.

When society is laughing at them instead of acting like they have any kind of serious platform they aren’t so proud to be bigots.

Speaking proud bigots, I haven’t seen or heard much of those proud boys since their training video got leaked and all of the world was laughing at them. Are they embarrassed or did they all overdose or go to jail by now? The ones we have in New Hampshire out by Keene are big fans of fentanyl and meth so I’m not sure they’re even still alive anymore.

@maggiejk @xenophora @bojacobs @AlgoCompSynth Agreed. Ridicule clearly seems to be the best weapon against these fuckers.

@bojacobs @AlgoCompSynth

What was the Little Tramp schtick? Don't you mean the Great Dictator?

And Chaplin was not Jewish... in Attenborough's film, Chaplin says "I don't have that honour"

Bo Jacobs

@pete @AlgoCompSynth The Little Tramp was Chaplain's silent character back in the teens and twenties. He was always in relationship with much more powerful people than he was who were usually depicted as fools and childish.

Peter Wood

@bojacobs @AlgoCompSynth

Yes, I know about Charlie Chaplin. I didn't understand what you meant by "Plus". Did you mean the part about about Jewish people making the evil look like fools by playing them? I didn't get the connection to Chaplin's Little Tramp who was neither evil, nor Jewish.

Bo Jacobs

@pete @AlgoCompSynth The plus Little Tramp part is not specifically about Jewish humor, but about how Chaplain designed the character, in part, to be a foil for rich and powerful people who acted idiotically.

RejZoR

@AlgoCompSynth @bojacobs Wasn't Charlie Chaplin mocking Hitler first with The Great Dictator back when WW2 wasn't in motion yet?

Robin Adams

@rejzor @AlgoCompSynth @bojacobs The Three Stooges' You Nazty Spy came out in January 1940.

Chaplin's The Great Dictator was October 1940.

@AlgoCompSynth @bojacobs huh, no never heard of Howard. What the film called?

FreddyB Aviation Photography

@bojacobs The same with Colonel Klink of Hogans Hero's fame was played by Werner Klemperer, who was from a Jewish family, and would only take the role if Klink was basically a fool

🍥SarahBurnout🍥

@cvvhrn

there were a lot of jews playing nazi officers, etc., in hogan's heroes. the opportunity to make fools of nazis must have been most delicious.

@bojacobs

Seedling

@homelessjun @cvvhrn @bojacobs Lebeau, Burkhalter and Schultz actors were all Jewish. I love that show.

🍥SarahBurnout🍥

@Seedling

robert clary, who played corporal LeBeau, was an amazingly kind person. i've heard the same about john banner (sergeant schutlz) and werner klemperer (colonel kilnk), who was also a classical violinist in real life.

@cvvhrn @bojacobs

64 Islands Airship Co-op

@homelessjun @cvvhrn @bojacobs yes thank you! i’ve been casually wondering how hogan’s heroes ever got made.

TrueFluke

@bojacobs "Heil, Myself" sung by a gay Hitler is at once shocking and fucking brilliant (Mel Brooks, The Producers).

@bojacobs a common trait of most populists and autocrats seems to be that they have a hard time laughing about themselves, even in the most harmless circumstances

Kydia Music

@kwramm @bojacobs

Its a tell-tale sign of Psychopaths and Narcissists that they can’t laugh at themselves.

Fascism is Psychopathy and Narcissistic Personality Disorder writ large, as a national identity.

Phil Landmeier

@KydiaMusic @kwramm @bojacobs Exactly. It's a cluster of neuroses, starting with serious self-esteem problems. And so, societies with self-esteem problems are ripe for fascism to take hold.

Another red-flag for me is a society that loves the concept of revenge, which the USA is. Americans love the idea of getting revenge and this is one of the things that makes Trump so attractive. Trump frequently threatens revenge and this turns his followers on.

All of this stems from a populace that is unhappy and feels put down, which much of the USA also feels. Racists feel put down. The rest feel they can't get ahead because the system is rigged. Which it is, by the wealthy, but they don't understand it. They don't realize that the wealthy people they idolize are the very ones who have rigged the system and destroyed the middle class.

MrMozz

@bojacobs I first read your post as Mel GIBSON and was wildly confused.

And yeah, the crimes of the Nazis were terrible but their ideas are objectively ridiculous and deserve all the mockery we can give them.

gmoke

@bojacobs

from On Hitler's Mein Kampf by Albrecht Koschorke
The cabaret artist Serdar Somuncu, who performed readings from Mein Kampf in the 1990s, put it this way: “Hitler plus power is gruesome, but Hitler minus power is a comedy.”

Mel Brooks & Somuncu should collaborate. Soon.

I sent the suggestion to Rob Reiner whom I have no connection to so
we'll see.

@bojacobs Christian nonviolence scholar Walter Wink also covers this in his semi-famous theology book, _Engaging the Powers_

Some extracts are available here:
cres.org/pubs/jesus.htm

Wink writes: "The Powers That Be literally stand on their dignity. Nothing depotentiates them faster than deft lampooning. By refusing to be awed by their power, the powerless are emboldened to seize the initiative, even where structural change is not immediately possible."

L'égrégore André ꕭꕬ

@PabloMartini @bojacobs If you have anything to contribute to this, please do. Or is your schtick just to imply a Jew automatically sides with the IDF?

Bullies in general do not like being made fun of. They wanna gain attention and most of all, respect. You give them attention but no respect, and you just yank the rug right out from under them.

@bojacobs Scared people seek protection from strong leaders. Portraying leaders as evil (implying strong) dictators enforces this mechanism. Portraying them as stupid or weak triggers fears in their followers doubting their ability to provide protection and undermines their followership. However, there is a risk of underestimating/misrepresenting the cunning of those "killer clowns" so they can go a long way under the radar and do damage. Best to not only portray them, but show with facts that they are evil, weak and stupid (cf "banality of evil" by Hannah Arendt).

That may explain why 'Allo. Allo' is popular not just in france, but I think it is or was also popuar in Germany too, it made fun of everyone esp the German and Italians.

Force of Habit

@zleap @bojacobs I think it took a while and there was some discussion. But I could be misremembering this.

fabos 🏳️‍🌈

@bojacobs I'd say Charlie Chaplin, also a jewish actor, director and artist, did this way earlier. Just review 'The Great Dictator' 😁
UPDATE: CC just didn't contradict the *false* report being jewish out of solidarity. The movie is great making fun of Nazis, still

Peluche Cero

@fabos @bojacobs Chaplin was not Jewish, he had Roma ancestry 😉

fabos 🏳️‍🌈

@peluchecero @bojacobs uh nice to know. He didn't contradict the false report about him being jewish, because oft solidarity 🙂

@fabos @peluchecero @bojacobs

In the film, Chaplin (1992), when a German official asserts that Chaplin's is Jewish, he says he does not have that honour.

@bojacobs I got the impression that making fools of them made them look less threatening, now that people, who lived through that time, are nearly gone.

@SenseException @bojacobs write your jokes on the surface of reasonably durable sand ✒️

Micha Katz

@SenseException I strongly agree and this is why a lot of young people in Italy joke about Anna Frank and Hitler, they are seen as comedy characters after decades of nazi jokes in Family Guy or comedy movies. Also this "weird" meme about Trump/the right I dont like it, weird used to be something to be proud of, meaning you are different than the mass. What is the opposite of weird? Normie? Conformist? This is not going to end well
@bojacobs

Ariaflame

@bull @SenseException @bojacobs The point is that those of us who are good weird know that we are weird, we're not mainstream, we're fine with that. The MAGA folk though, they've deluded themselves that they are normal, that they are the mainstream and everyone who is a real person is like them. That's why calling them weird gets so much under their skin. Because they're not normal. They are weird.

Maggie Maybe

@ariaflame @bull @SenseException @bojacobs exactly, they’ve deluded themselves into thinking they are speaking for all Americans.

Telling them they are weird reminds them that they live in their strange little pocket of delusion and everyone outside of their cult thinks they’re weird.

It’s a step in the direction of shunning them from society and I am all for it. They are dangerous on multiple levels.

Maggie Maybe

@bull @SenseException @bojacobs oh I love it because good people are proud of being weird, it’s the fascist who don’t want to be seen as weird they see it as an insult.

And living in fear of their reaction to us pushing back is exactly how they got so much power in the first place. “Oh NO Biden can’t do that (anything good) because then Trumpers will say ______ “

JFC at that point the boogie man doesn’t even have to really exist as long as everybody’s terrified about what they will do because of any kind of pushback.

That’s some real power. And we just handed it to them.

Both quoted at the start of CS Lewis's Screwtape Letters (which was itself dedicated to JRR Tolkien). The tactic continues to be effective after literal centuries.

@bojacobs I think Voltaire stumbled upon it even earlier.

kosure

@bojacobs It's so true. Think of Xi and Winnie the Pooh or Putin with the makeup pictures. It reveals that as a prerequisite to being a fascist you must be a thin skinned crybaby. That type of brutality is the easiest way to camouflage such massive personal insufficiency.

Harris✔︎

@bojacobs Most of the actors portraying Nazis in Hogan's Heroes were Jewish. They clearly shared the same thought.

Maggie Maybe

@bojacobs well yes, and men have been telling us for a couple decades now that their fear of being embarrassed on a first date is on par with women being afraid we will be murdered or assaulted.

These dudes see being laughed at as just as offensive as being raped.

They also tell us that shunning works wonders.

I think the problem there is that, having seen them portrayed as fools so often, we had stopped being on guard against them. And now they are back in force.

@bojacobs now I want to act like a Disney villain and shout "FOOLS! ALL OF YOU" on every single one of their posts. 😂
