Attention, developers! My inner perfectionist just noticed that the #Flathub download badge has been subtly improved, but many repositories are still using the old design. Let's fix this! Make sure that your READMEs and websites are rocking the latest design from flathub.org/badges. It's not much, but it will let me sleep peacefully at night again!

Bonus points if you use localized variants where appropriate! We ought to show off the i18n work that has been done for these.

Currently doing some PRs to other apps updating the badge, and discovered that #GNOME Boxes is using an even older one! Jeez.

Brage Fuglseth

@pojntfx Yup! Hopefully the new URL is here to stay. I assume it was changed because having the badge locale as a query param allows for easier programmatic fetching of the badge in different locales.

@bragefuglseth Yup, the new one looks a lot nicer (and reminds me a bit of shields.io ^^)

Brage Fuglseth

@pojntfx My first thought was that it has moved from mimicking App Store’s badge to mimicking Google Play’s instead 😂

Nickname

@bragefuglseth but what exactly is the improvement?
I mean "Download on" had the same length as "Flathub" in the old one, now with "Get it on" it looks a bit off.
Does it have a better resolution or something?
And well I assume the wording on the localized ones didnt fit to begin with, so what got "subtly improved"?

Brage Fuglseth

@Nickname Well, at least I subjectively think it looks better 😂 It mimicks Google Play’s badge FWIW, and I don’t think that one is too bad either.

But regardless of that, the new one is what apps will adapt going forward, so for the sake of consistency everyone is better off rolling with the shiny new thing ✨

@Nickname One additional practical advantage with the new badge is that the letter kerning of «Get it on» is lower, so there is in fact a lot more space for localized variants to use as well.

@Nickname @bragefuglseth my first question was... ok, so who designed the new one?

Edit: followed by what did the guy who designed the first one do?

(; self-edification for the win?

Brage Fuglseth

@sn0n @Nickname pretty sure @jimmac is the man behind both the old and the new one ⭐️

@bragefuglseth Razze (@razze) deserves all the credit for the tedious hard work of localization and ease of use / api. As always, I only did the initial kick off.

@bragefuglseth The "Download On" baseline aligns with the arrow of the Flathub logo. The "Get It On" does not. 🥲

Brage Fuglseth

@camelCaseNick That applies for *English*, but the badge is available in many other languages too! And making that happen automatically for all of them is impossible.

I also think this is mostly a matter of getting used to it, as Google Play has had a similar design for ages without anyone complaining 🙂

Brage Fuglseth

@camelCaseNick oh wait, I misread your comment. Didn’t notice the alignment in the previous one myself, and I’m not sure if the lack of it in the new one matters all that much 😄

Markus Göllnitz

@bragefuglseth Wouldn't be surprised if it didn't matter to most people. Just a random little thing I liked. I'll survive without it, yes.

Gabs

@bragefuglseth Is there a place to translate it? The Romanian locale doesn't seem to be in Romanian: flathub.org/api/badge?locale=r

dinosauce

@bragefuglseth i think that turkish version has some minor issues.
saying something like "download" instead of "download from here" should be enough, this is what google play does with for example, though with a plural imperative suffix. plus, the design seems to have suffered from I/İ problem (see also: en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dotted and honestly gives out a crappy Chinese auto-translation app vibe)

Brage Fuglseth

@dinosauce A Turkish translator has already opened an issue about the badge i18n issues: github.com/flathub-infra/websi

Neil Darlow :gotosocial: :silverblue: :xmpp:

@bragefuglseth "Get it on Flathub". Isn't that encouraging promiscuity? Seriously, the former is less ambiguous and unlikely to cause anyone offence. 😉

Brage Fuglseth

@neil Sure, go tell that to Google! 😂

Alexandre Franke

@bragefuglseth maybe the one at the old URL should be replaced with the new one as well, so it gets automatically update for everyone that used that address?
