jesus the energizer bunny looks terrible

Still frame from Appleā€™s ā€œThe Lost Voiceā€ commercial. A human-sized raggedy looking pink animal is talking to a child. This childā€™s parents are nowhere to be found. I am worried for the child.
Mike Beasley

@samhenrigold thatā€™s what happens when you just keep going and going and going and never take a break

sam henri gold

Letā€™s just have a look at the FACTS.

Insurrections on the Capitol before Siracusa stopped writing OS X deep dives for Ars Technica: 0

After: More than zero.

Iā€™m not saying those reviews were the glue holding this country together, but yes i am

Jay :verified_gay:

@samhenrigold this is the causation analysis I was looking for. Idk why this wasnā€™t reported before.

@samhenrigold omg, it is trashdesign year in review season again?

Chris (He/Him)

@samhenrigold My first name on Spotify was Gorthaag, destroyer of worlds. I had to change it when I started getting added to blends.

Right now Iā€™m working on updating the visuals for the link preview card for Mastodon Android. Glad to announce we beat Twitter to the punch by developing the advanced technology required to display the link title and description.

i keep seeing social ads from microsoft with the narration ā€œhereā€™s a hidden gem in NYC: the Microsoft store on fifth avenue is a great place for gamersā€ and i canā€™t describe the deep sadness i feel when a company calls their own retail store a hidden gem

@samhenrigold @joesteel

You know maybe making the stores an open LAN party will draw better traffic than just saying ā€˜Hey mister, need to buy a Surface?ā€™ ā€˜A what?ā€™

Nick Foster

@samhenrigold @joesteel these social media commercials that are set up like influencer videos are INSUFFERABLE. The worst are when one person pretends to be two people having a very forced conversation

Penguin

@samhenrigold @joesteel The always empty Microsoft Stores across the US were an embarrassment for many years. Their consumer strategy built around Windows Phone was doomed, closing the stores was the only rational thing to do. Leaving the NYC store open was silly, but itā€™s certainly hidden šŸ™

i need to book a flight by the end of the year so i can use an expiring $500 delta flight credit. where go

Š“Ń€ŠøŠ³Š¾Ń€ŠøŠ¹ ŠšŠ»ŃŽŃˆŠ½ŠøŠŗŠ¾Š²

They once gave me a $75 credit after delaying my flight from NYC to Moscow and causing me to miss my connection that I was stupid enough to buy as a separate ticket. I wanted to use it 2 years later, when I traveled to the US once again, only to find out that it's expired ĀÆ\_(惄)_/ĀÆ

idk, go to California

Joe Rosensteel šŸ³ļøā€šŸŒˆ

@samhenrigold as someone that just got back from Paris and Strasbourg, I have to say Paris and Strasbourg arenā€™t bad. London is always the easiest to deal with. Domestically, New Orleans is probably the most interesting direct flight for you from NYC on Delta.

an uncomfortable few months in 2013 where flat design was *around* but was not yet mainstream so designers were only flirting with flatness: a highly specific thread

@samhenrigold This was literally alllll of my web / app designs from that time period haha!

1px border. 1px inner shadow. Slight gradient. 5px corners. Slight drop-shadow.

Absolutely loved designing and building 'em!

Now it's just solid flat box, solid flat box, solid flat box...mayyybe some rounded corners. Done.

calling for a global moratorium on all no-name/drop-shipped furniture. i had to tape down a table to not wobble because it wasnā€™t weighted in any direction, so putting any weight on the back would cause it to slip and fall.

shop, wayfare, amazon in particular, youā€™re all dead to me.

sam henri gold

they had the audacity to ask for a review at 8pm after people have finished their drink of choice. rookie mistake. Iā€™m breaking out the sass in full force to roast this shit table.

A drafted review for the table Iā€™m mad at:

All the screws are tightened, everything is put together correctly. And yet, it rocks and sways like a drunkard on a ship. If you put your hand on the surface and move it left to right, the legs will happily oblige. This table is weighted the same in the front as it is in the back, so if you put any weight towards the back of the table, it will slip and fall towards you.

I thought my floors were not level so I put felt pads underneath to even it out, but my floors are fine. Itā€™s just a poorly designed product. I had to tape down the front of this table so it wouldnā€™t flop around and bang into my walls when I drop my keys on it.

The clips arenā€™t even sturdy, they donā€™t extend enough to hold a tote bag. What am I supposed to hang on it, wired earbuds? In the year of our lord 2023? Like some kind of toothless bumpkin??

When I inevitably wind up in hell for reasons I do not wish to get into in this review, this table will be there for me to drop my Mitsubishi Mirage keys onto. At least there, the base might have melted enough to stay fixed to the goddamn floor.

going through my spotify wrapped from years ago when i was a freshman in high school and absolutely heaving. i would 100% cut this idiotā€™s earbud wire if i saw him today.

NotebookLM is an extraordinarily fun experiment to use. I just got access earlier today and it's really something else. You dump a bunch of text sources into a ā€œnotebookā€ and that trains an LLM so you can interface with it about your specific sources (with citations).

I gave it a bunch of research papers I archived from my college days. As a chatbot, itā€™s whatever. As a search engine, itā€™s incredible. This is the best way to search a large corpus of papers.

A Notebook LM chat session in a split view layout. On the left, a plain text representation of a research paper PDF. On the right, I asked it ā€œWhat are some methods that platforms use to make their products more addictive?ā€

It responded in part:
"Methods that firms use to make their platforms more addictive:
ā€¢ Automatically rolling over into the next day. Some platforms, such as TikTok, automatically roll over into the next day without asking the user if they want to continue. This can make it difficult for users to stop using the platform, as they may feel like they need to finish what they were doing before they can stop.
ā€¢ Push notifications. Platforms often send push notifications to users, even if they are not actively using the platform.
This can be a way to remind users of the platform and encourage them to log in.
ā€¢ Personalization. Platforms use data about users to personalize their experience, which can make the platform more engaging and addictive. For example, a platform may show users content that they are interested in, or suggest friends that they may want to follow.
ā€¢ Feedback loops...ā€
Notebook LM with the source panel open, showing four of the six PDFs Iā€™ve loaded in. They all are ā€œenabled,ā€ meaning that chat context has access to that material. You can tick them off to exclude a specific source from conversation. I asked a question: ā€œDo casinos and digital products share any DNA in their addictive properties?ā€

It responded in part:
"Yes, casinos and digital products share some DNA in their addictive properties.
ā€¢ Both casinos and digital products use variable rewards to keep users engaged. Variable rewards are rewards that are not given on a fixed schedule, but rather are given randomly. This makes it difficult for users to predict when they will receive a reward, which keeps them engaged and coming back for more.
ā€¢ Both casinos and digital products use social reinforcement to keep users engaged. Social reinforcement occurs when users interact with other people who are also using the product. This can create a sense of community and belonging, which can make it difficult for users to quit using the product.
ā€¢ Both casinos and digital products use psychological triggers to keep users engaged. Psychological triggers are things that can trigger a user's desire to use the product. These triggers can include things like the sound of a slot machine, the smell of a casino, or the sight of a social media notification.ā€

@samhenrigold great work on this! excited to see it come to ios too.

also, for your consideration: publishing a mastodon HIG. I think it'd be useful to cement some interface/interaction decisions that *should* appear across all party apps. (particularly considerations around handling CW, accessibility, alt text, reporting, nudges like above, etc.)

@samhenrigold @Gargron This looks really cool, especially the stranger bio info and the notice for old posts. From the screenshot, the general guideline info seems like a lot and might feel overwhelming. Iā€™d suggest reducing the copy, but I guess thatā€™s what the testing is for. Keep up the good work.
