I need to build some kind of framework to better organize my "search every single binary of every single program every released for this platform" projects.

I started it for Wii and need to do it with DOS games. (and early (<2000) windows games, which will be WAY HARDER)

Foone🏳️‍⚧️

all these pirates being like "I have every SNES rom!" and I'm like AND WHAT ARE YOU DOING WITH THEM? PLAYING THEM? BORING. LEARN TO REVERSE ENGINEER THEM AT SCALE

Foone🏳️‍⚧️

it has been zero days since I've had to learn a new assembly language to be able to hack a game

Andrew 🏳️‍🌈 💻 🧦

@foone Also, reading that (due to my tangental mind), I just lost The Game, so now you have, too.

Ghidra question:

I'm working on one main binary and I'm needing to repeatedly import binary patches over it.
The problem is that the way ghidra lets you do this (that I know of) are to manually select each instruction and enter new assembly, or to go into the binary edit and change the bytes one by one.

Is there some easy way to import a binary patch that I'm missing?

Foone🏳️‍⚧️

I think there's a way to import a whole new binary over the existing one you were reversing, so I guess I could patch it outside of ghidra and then do a full reimport, which hopefully shouldn't lose any of my labels and such

Bad idea: build a captcha library that embeds DOSBox so it can make you beat levels/puzzles from DOS games to continue.

Prove you're a human! Beat Lifewater Oasis from Commander Keen 4! Defeat the Yeti in Kings Quest 5! Make sure 15 lemmings survive! Get the sword in Prince of Persia!

Foone🏳️‍⚧️

Honestly just making it do The Incredible Machine puzzles would be hilarious

Darn. I don't know if my laptop can handle this level. I'm dangerously close to the minimum system requirements to for this game!

it needs at minimum 8mb of RAM (with 16 MB suggested), but this laptop my roommate fished out of the ewaste for me has a mere 16GB of RAM.

Heroes of Might and Magic II screenshot, showing a message from the mapmaper, reading:

PLAYERS PLEASE NOTE!
"Colossal Cavern" is an extra-large, complex map with lots of animations and events. Smaller Windows-95 configurations may encounter crashes during play, so save often. You can sometimes get past them by turning off your music and sound, or by playing under DOS. I'm sorry about this, but the problem seems to be in the operating system, not the map or the game -- Charles Watkins

I'm looking at a company hiring for techs to work on neat aerospace projects. they're a contractor doing stuff with GPS and calculating orbits and stuff!

and they want you to know Ada. NOPE, EJECT, ABORT, NOT A GOOD JOB

Foone🏳️‍⚧️

it's not about the language itself, mind you: Ada is a perfectly fine language, even if I don't know it.

It's that the people who want you to know Ada are the people who thought it should be required for all new programming projects, like the department of defense

The next big thing: VGA-C.

analog video, but you don't have to flip the cable to make it fit!

NanoRaptor

@foone VGA-C with autodetect. Only 5 of the centre pins exist on the plug, so it's all physical auto-configuring depending which prong is in which hole, a little bit like

A picture of a VGA-C connector, which carrier VGA but is flippable. It's kind of like a squished up VGA connector, but really altogether wrong.

argh. I continue to be stuck in the annoying position of not doing enough JS to really get into the ecosystem, but having to more than no JS, thus I need to interact with the JS ecosystem

Foone🏳️‍⚧️

someone writes some code that does exactly what I want, and the install instructions are "just use yarn add or npm -i!" and I'm using neither of those things

Happy found-under-a-pile-of-leaves day for that purple-haired punk what likes the floppies. It's been 40 years since we got a new Foone.

BTW if you want to get me a birthday present, I've got a ko-fi. I'm currently unemployed and trying to get my healthcare fixed, so it'd really help:

Upon powerup, the CPU begins to execute code.

This has made a lot of people very angry and been widely regarded as a bad move.

@foone it is a well known fact that software was a mistake.

Kroc Camen

@foone That's not even the half of it, there are multiple CPUs involved in just powering and bootstrapping the main CPU before we even get into Intel ME etc. In a post-apocalyptic situation, the main reason we'll all be using 6502s/Z80s won't be radiation, it'll be because we physically can't bootstrap anything more recent.

Matt Lewis

@foone @kianryan
There is a theory which states that if ever anyone discovers exactly what the CPU is for and why it is here, it will instantly disappear and be replaced by something even more bizarre and inexplicable.

There is another theory which states that this has already happened.

I'm hiding here from Tumblr. I made a joke* there, and now in response people are trying to send me links to slavoj zizek clone fucking.
I don't know what that is and I don't want to find out, so I'm going to just do mastodon for the rest of today.

* this is a type of humorous trick people do on other social medias. I know y'all don't get or understand them here, but they're a big thing elsewhere.

Foone🏳️‍⚧️

When I mentioned mastodon on Tumblr, someone asked what it was. Someone else (Tumblr user flexplate) answered "It's like Twitter but for people who know how to troubleshoot Linux printer drivers."

Which is mean but not entirely untrue

"hey if you want to play our game which infringes on a bunch of nintendo copyrights, just join our discord server for the download!"

great! make sure no one has a chance to archive the download, that'll be handy when Nintendo shows up with a cease and desist.

Foone🏳️‍⚧️

oh and the entire contents of the readme.txt file is just a link back to their discord

They should remake Jurassic Park but the moment of foreshadowing in the presentation-ride is "we used AI to fill in the gaps in the DNA samples"

@foone and get rid of the canonically trans dinosaurs?

mkj

@foone "THAT explains why half the dinosaurs have three eyes..."

datenwolf

@foone wait... I'll have to rewatch that part, but in my memory they actually did mention the use of AI there.

HOT TAKE: if you design a laptop with a power supply that looks like this, you should go to jail.

Laptops should be powered by TWO WIRES and the voltage, amperage, and polarity should be WRITTEN ON THE BOTTOM, UNDER PENALTY OF LAW

A laptop power supply. It's a circular 4-pin connector

@foone What a nice PS2 connector you have there! I'm sure it's safe to attach my keyboard

Wulfy

@foone

One of my most ingenious hacks in its simplicity was to make a cunty dell laptop power plug that was using third rail as a shitty "buy my overpriced proprietary power supply" rail.

As far as I could tell, it was not drawing any current, it was just a lame "security check". Hacked with a single resistor.

Foone🏳️‍⚧️

ugh. I picked up a shitty NUC from ewaste and it had a label on it for an AI company.
ahh, another startup that burnt out trying to build some silly AI project on crap hardware. I wonder what they did? I check their URL:
ahh. healthcare. great, great.

@foone thanks! Your threads are like the greatest content here.

@foone wonder how everyone seems to be able to draw nice stuff from e-waste. Here it's only junk all the time :(

Keyboard idea:
It's a regular keyboard, but it has a "Doom" button.

Pressing that button makes the computer play Doom. The important part is that the computer doesn't need to:
1. have Doom on it
2. Connect to the internet

to play Doom. It works by typing in Doom and then playing it, like you were reading it out of a 1980s 8-bit computer magazine.

Foone🏳️‍⚧️

The tricky part is making it cross platform. I would want it to work on Windows, Mac, and Linux, of course.

Foone🏳️‍⚧️

Someone hacked into my computer and made it launch 500 copies of DOSBox.

That's right. It's a DOS attack.

@foone someone once hacked mine so it wouldn't boot up. Would get past BIOS and lock up.......

It was a DOSDOS

I'm a few thousand dollars away from being able to pay my bills this month, but the most important thing I need to pay for is my health insurance: I've got meds I can't afford without it and an upcoming CT scan.
If you can donate a few dollars or more, that'd really help! Thanks!

That new pico is neat. A chip that can change architectures? And even, technically, run as two heterogeneous cores?

Neat! Can you add x86 to the pico3? Thanks.
