@mhoye even if it was, it's him telling everyone he's coming for their free sharing and wants to lock content creation behind a rent seeking wall

Dave Spector

@mhoye abso-fucking-lutely โ€” all of copyright law has entered the chat.

The CFAA and the DMCA need to come down full force on Microsoft here. The FBI needs to be kicking in some doors.

JP

@mhoye "can anyone stop us, really?" is going to work its way through the courts, cool

Eugen Rochko

It seems that this door getting pulled was a problem that required increasingly stronger measures.

Turns out Perplexity, the AI company that has been ripping off journalism, started by posing as academics and using those fake credentials to scrape Twitter 404media.co/perplexitys-origin

Perplexity took advantage of this free access for academics by creating fake powered Bird SQL.

โ€œSo we built all this into a good search experience over Twitter, which we scraped with academic accounts just before Elon took over Twitter,โ€ Srinivas said on the podcast. โ€œBack then Twitter would allow you to create academic API accounts and we would create like, lots of them with like generating phone numbers, writing research proposals with GPT.โ€

Science fiction is all about a Great Forgetting age where records are lost etc and sometimes it's natural disaster and sometimes it's revolutionary action but in our world it's apparently for tax write-offs

@danhon And limiting non-tax future prosecution too!

Zack Stern

@danhon is there a timely new one?

Was MTV.com one?

I share your perspective if not, just nervously wondering what I missed now.

Bengt

@danhon People are like "oh mien gott TV reruns from 20 years ago could be lost forever! This is literally 1984, but worse!"

Absolute hoarder mentality. Do you guys have piles of old newspapers in your houses as well?

Shooting black and white during golden hour almost makes it look like the lighting is artificial. Or maybe it's just me.

@Gargron Maybe artificial lighting tries to emulate golden hour light?

@Gargron yellow filter might have something to do with it :) that, plus BW is simply awesome

Adam

@Gargron
Once, during golden hour, I overheard a woman remark how spectacular the view was. The man she was with responded, โ€œItโ€™s the light โ€“ it makes everything artificially beautiful.โ€

Eugen Rochko

my brother sent me this SPECTACULAR shot from last night's Mets game broadcast. I feel like I should be saluting???

on the right, somebody in the stadium crowd dressed as Grimace, the big purple blob mascot from McDonald's. on the left, the screen has started to fade to pre-commercial, so superimposed next to Grimace is an American flag in front of a sunset. it's one of the most American images I've ever seen.

My first experience with Ilford Delta 400 was on medium format, so I should not be surprised it's a bit grainier than I expected on 35mm.

@Gargron the gray color tones are so soft and subtle. Very pleasing to look at.

@Gargron Haven't used this but did once enjoy B&W D&P with Beutler Tetenal Neofin developers for ultra-fine grain, then printing with a Schneider Componon lens, for the sharpest granularity, highest acutance images. HP4 & 5 I think.

Missing out on the smell? It was a bit of a non-addictive high. ๐Ÿ˜‹

@Gargron didnโ€™t know you do film photography. You got cinephileโ€™s attention

"You might ask how AI generates something so completely bananas. Itโ€™s because AI canโ€™t tell the difference between true and false. Instead, a complex computer program plays probabilistic language guessing games, betting on what words are most likely to follow other words. If an AI program hasnโ€™t been trained on a subject โ€” unusual last names, for instance โ€” it can conjure up authoritative-seeming but false verbiage."

J Paul Gibson

@gerrymcgovern thanks for sharing this; I would like to add that even when it has been trained on a subject it will still make things up. no amount of training will guarantee that it always tells the truth. it is not a training problem it is a property of the model.

DocRekd

@gerrymcgovern again my takeaway is to use AI search like normal search: check all the links it provides, and treat the verbal answer as a mere preview of the search

One of the strengths of Mastodon is our API that allows 3rd party developers to create powerful integrations and full-featured apps on entirely equal footing with our own, with absolute confidence that there will never be a rug-pull. I've decided to check how the diversity of tools looked like in practice.

@Gargron What's really cool is that I'm using 2 programs, one for my iPad and phone and the other for my computer, and both work great with Mastodon because they're totally accessible with screen readers. thank you for helping that be a possibility.

Mark Stoneman

@Gargron Don't IFTTT integrations exist only for mastodon.social?

votejainism

@Gargron

Hi Eugen!

Perhaps if mastodon.social committed itself to not interfering in elections around the world, then governments around the world might start to recommend it.
Currently, Twitter/X seems to have free rein to do whatever it wants.
They shadowbanned and then fully suspended my account, which affected my ability to enter the final stage of the General Election here in the UK.

Hmm, this seems like one of those moments in the cultural zeitgeist where comics are being used to convey the underlying issues at web hosting companies. The lack of people on it is a thoughtful message though!
