It seems that this door getting pulled was a problem that required increasingly stronger measures.

Turns out Perplexity, the AI company that has been ripping off journalism, started by posing as academics and using those fake credentials to scrape Twitter https://www.404media.co/perplexitys-origin-story-scraping-twitter-with-fake-academic-accounts/ Science fiction is all about a Great Forgetting age where records are lost etc and sometimes it's natural disaster and sometimes it's revolutionary action but in our world it's apparently for tax write-offs

@danhon is there a timely new one? Was MTV.com one? I share your perspective if not, just nervously wondering what I missed now.

@ipg@wetdry.world had the perfect idea for a photo edit but some bad thunderstorms just started so iโll post peak tomorrow Shooting black and white during golden hour almost makes it look like the lighting is artificial. Or maybe it's just me. ๐ท Canon AE-1 Program

@Gargron yellow filter might have something to do with it :) that, plus BW is simply awesome my brother sent me this SPECTACULAR shot from last night's Mets game broadcast. I feel like I should be saluting??? My first experience with Ilford Delta 400 was on medium format, so I should not be surprised it's a bit grainier than I expected on 35mm. ๐ท Canon AE-1 Program

@Gargron Haven't used this but did once enjoy B&W D&P with Beutler Tetenal Neofin developers for ultra-fine grain, then printing with a Schneider Componon lens, for the sharpest granularity, highest acutance images. HP4 & 5 I think. Missing out on the smell? It was a bit of a non-addictive high. ๐ Threads users who have federated their accounts can now see replies from other platforms, but not reply to the replies (yet) https://www.theverge.com/2024/6/25/24185226/meta-threads-fediverse-likes-replies

@That_One_Guy @gerrymcgovern thanks for sharing this; I would like to add that even when it has been trained on a subject it will still make things up. no amount of training will guarantee that it always tells the truth. it is not a training problem it is a property of the model. @gerrymcgovern again my takeaway is to use AI search like normal search: check all the links it provides, and treat the verbal answer as a mere preview of the search One of the strengths of Mastodon is our API that allows 3rd party developers to create powerful integrations and full-featured apps on entirely equal footing with our own, with absolute confidence that there will never be a rug-pull. I've decided to check how the diversity of tools looked like in practice.

Hi Eugen! Perhaps if http://mastodon.social committed itself to not interfering in elections around the world, then governments around the world might start to recommend it.

Hmm, this seems like one of those moments in the cultural zeitgeist where comics are being used to convey the underlying issues at web hosting companies. The lack of people on it is a thoughtful message though! @MrLovenstein so true! same reason given to us for suspending our account on @nbloglinks@mastodon.social so i'm free from this hypocrisy ๐ |
@mhoye even if it was, it's him telling everyone he's coming for their free sharing and wants to lock content creation behind a rent seeking wall
@mhoye abso-fucking-lutely โ all of copyright law has entered the chat.
The CFAA and the DMCA need to come down full force on Microsoft here. The FBI needs to be kicking in some doors.
@mhoye "can anyone stop us, really?" is going to work its way through the courts, cool
