It seems that this door getting pulled was a problem that required increasingly stronger measures.

@FlockOfCats @chadkoh I think in design/behavioral sciences(?) they would say this indicates that the door handle design instinctively tells people to pull, and if they want people to push, they should install a horizontal door handle or something designed in a way that signals people to push not pull.

"People not reading the signs" isn't the problem, it's that the door was designed in the wrong way, a way that doesn't match people's natural behavior.

@chadkoh @FlockOfCats i’m puce trailblazer and i approve this joke

You really can get almost anything taken care of at the convenience stores! :family_mart: :family_mart_socks:

@FlockOfCats dying to know what the opposite side says

Inny78 :unverified:

@pucetrailblazer @FlockOfCats "You can stop pushing now."
"Please stop."
"You're inside. Drop the door."

@FlockOfCats there is some lesson here about ergonomics...

Feyter

@FlockOfCats next paper says: "nevermind, just pull" πŸ™‚

DELETED

@FlockOfCats instructions unclear. shattered the glass door to get in.

Kristoffer Lawson

@FlockOfCats and yet, the easy solution, seen commonly in the UK but rarely elsewhere, is to not have a handle on the side that requires a push. Basic and powerful #UX design.

Andrew Ahearne

@FlockOfCats Everyone knows that the push needs to be bigger the closer you get to the fulcrum. πŸ™‚

Shawn Brown :python:

@FlockOfCats This is a "Norman Door"--the design language of the door suggest an action that is opposite of what you need to do.

Some info about this here... youtube.com/watch?v=yY96hTb8Wg

@shawnbrown @FlockOfCats that was a great little watch! thanks!! ✨

@shawnbrown @FlockOfCats

There's a whole book on it:

β€œThe Design of Everyday Things: Revised and Expanded Edition Kindle Edition”
by Donald A. Norman

And it's not just doors.

He's the β€œNorman” of β€œNorman doors”

Fabimaru

@FlockOfCats
Well, that display is logical, pushing the door near the axis requires a large amount of strenght.

John Brophy

@Fabimaru @FlockOfCats That's what I thought. It's like a practical lesson in fulcrum physics.

Sloan Studio

@FlockOfCats remove the handle and replace with a flat plate so only pushing is possible.

Slim Amamou

@FlockOfCats poor UX. Issue can be solved by removing the handle.

Melissa Atwell

@FlockOfCats Because it clearly has the wrong handle to suggest its usage

Trinsec

@FlockOfCats@famichiki.jp After succeeding: Congratulations, you birthed an opening!

Karolina Bielnik

@FlockOfCats I never understood, why doors that require pushing get the same handle on both sides - you know, the ones designed for pulling. You don't need any written instructions if design is good.

Jacco van Schaik

@FlockOfCats I assume the Japanese characters mean something like "No, dumbass"

Landsil

@FlockOfCats it does have the vertical pull handle tbh

Catnip

@eniko @FlockOfCats or, maybe the size of the signs represent the amount of force to open the door when you push it there.

Ripp_

@FlockOfCats i should save this and use it as an example of bad design

Tanith the Gay

@FlockOfCats Somehow I got the urge'a try pulling this door.

Lord

@FlockOfCats I love the underline hierarchy.

Left > Right > Center

Scarred and Terraformed

@FlockOfCats it's motivational

If this was an antenatal class it'd be funny too tho

Z8TH

@FlockOfCats error in design, if you want people to push, do not install handle for pulling at all

Matthew Exon
The Chinese character 抽 means "pull", so that is totally what I would do if I saw that sign. I have learned 押 as meaning "mortgage" and I would definitely not be expecting to see it on a door sign.
Jon Yoder

@FlockOfCats With an opening method that affords pulling, all I can say is 'DUH'. Look up 'Norman Door' on Wikipedia and you'll see what I mean.

Don't add a yet-bigger sign. Fix the stupid door.

hypha - a fungus element

@FlockOfCats the closer you push from the hinge, the more force you need
hence the increasingly bigger font hehe

Matv1

@FlockOfCats No, I have seen this before. These can double as a midwife/maternity nurse.
