It always strikes me as a little odd, like, Yamaha, a company that makes pianos, synths, guitars... and motorcycles.

@Gargron nah makes sense. Ever ridden a well-tuned motorcycle down a winding country road on a warm Spring afternoon? Same feeling as playing a tricky concerto on the violin (Yamaha also make violins).

Paul Quirk

@Gargron as well as some fine turntables and amps.

zeruch

@Gargron they also do sporting goods, semiconductors, and a few other things. The post-war period In Japan birthed a lot of the keiretsu conglomerates that paved the model for multi pillar businesses that continue to this day, which is also been repeated in places like Korea with chaebol companies like Samsung, Daewoo and Hyundai.

How tf do you just lose track of $4B

Even intentionally

This is some Brewster's Millions shit

Dag Ågren ↙︎↙︎↙︎

@Gargron You get desensitised to this shit after following cryptocurrencies for too long.

Did you know one of the biggest crypto exchanges send nearly one billion dollars to a person who not only did they not even have a contract with, but whose full name they did not even know?

Turns out they didn't get that money back when they asked for it, for some reason.

"There’s Now an Even Worse Anti-Encryption Bill Than EARN IT"

Get your IT business out of the US. This needs to have an impact on the economy.

@Gargron this is made to corporately shakedown trade secrets.

The corporate way usurps democracy by trying to make a menace of the commoner..

Correct?

(Edit: I remember someone in the street in Austin talking about encryption on Facebook and a quick Google search confirms it.. They might be enough to get encryption banned on their own selves.)

The Privacy Foundation

@Gargron If you work at, or with, a US company that creates or relies upon software that uses #encryption, have you added EARN-IT & LAED to your issues list?

Joseph Nuthalapati :fbx:

@Gargron Could be a distraction tactic to divert attention away from the EARN IT Act or to make it look reasonable by comparison.

How to pick the most interesting color from an image? The current iteration of audio player takes the average color from the avatar and then lightens/darkens it to ensure contrast over the background. But the average color turns out to be grey fairly often. Is there a better way?

@Gargron

I wouldn't use the average color, but the most dominant colors in an image. Also pre-cropping and edge detection may help here to center on the focused part of the image.

gudenau

@Gargron Try the most prominent color and use alpha to weight it?

Robert

@Gargron no idea how to implement this as code, but maybe find the color with the highest difference in value between the lowest and highest of RGB? Like the most attractive would be something where one of the values is 255 and another is 0, and the least attractive would be any color where all three values are the same

"However, commercial companies claim that their rights must also be considered, particularly around trademarks, and they should also be granted access."

That's when they need to get a warrant through those legitimate companies.

I installed Messenger Lite for a few minutes thinking about contacting a friend.. then my phone felt gross.

I may have met some of their employees on the street in Austin. N A S T Y

Aaaah, Titan AE is such a good movie. Soundtrack could be better though. And the graphics aged a bit.

Zen

@Gargron “graphics” is so low brow. it’s not a video game. it’s high art. call it royale imagery with cheese

@Gargron yeah, but who names a planet "Bob", anyway?

@Gargron i hope no one will use this for voice messages, like in twitter do

@Gargron The visual and your profile photo are stunning, but it also gives the impression that the uploader is the artist.

@Gargron There is something that you probably want to consider: allow the audio to play in the background when scrolled out of view.

My work laptop is just too glitchy after upgrading from Ubuntu 16.04 to 18.04. Going to have to re-install fresh, try Pop!_OS this time since it's a System76 laptop.

@Gargron I don't know what any of this means but good luck.

There's a 2008 breaking news tweet about Joe Biden leaving the presidential race that seems to be going viral right now, and I think at least part of the problem could be that the date of the tweet is not actually included on any of the previews (when you e.g. post the link on Discord and it generates a preview). Mastodon's previews don't include the date either but maybe they should.

[DATA EXPUNGED]

@Gargron Yes, the answer is yes. Context matters to understanding information and metadata is amaaazing!

Iuri Guilherme

@Gargron in Brazil people distribute twitter content by means of screenshotting the tweet and the sharing the image over whatsapp and telegram. So the date being displayed depends on the view where the screenshot has been made.
