Almost missed the ferry. Arrived on Galiano Island, was greeted by the cutest baby pug... and now we're at the LEÑA artist residency. There is still snow on the ground here... what a beautiful place.
We'll be here for a few days. Very grateful that me and & Dev were invited to stay :>!

While this place is quiet, it is not a kind of quiet that I am used to. When indoors, can't hear birds, water, trees... wind... halyard slapping on the mast occasionally, just.... room tone.

It's freaking me right out 😅 ... it's SO loud....!!!

@rek Ah! Was talking to Avi about the Gradient retreat previously, but I couldn't make it out there at the time. Hope to hear how it is.

@rek I've been considering a folding ebike for wren. It will make grocery trips way easier and will go small enough to be boat appropriate. Real expensive tho!

When you flip a drawing horizonzally, and all of the wonkiness comes out, leaving you feeling like you don't really know how to draw after all.

Watched All That Breathes yesterday. An excellent, heartwrenching, and picturesque documentary.

It follows the brothers Saud and Nadeem, with Salik, as they rescue and heal black kites in Delhi. The birds fall out of the sky everyday, possibly due to bad air quality, and from the contaminants ingested at the city's landfills.

"Delhi is a gaping wound," Saud says, "and we're just a Band-Aid on it." And yet, they continue to do it.

@rek oh it's been on my watchlist for some time and i only recently noticed it was available. Thanks for this recommandation. (it'll help me not forget about it haha) and i should watch it soon!

Maybe(oz)

@rek I watched it recently. It's a really interesting movie, choosing to show a spark of hope in a sea of shit, and how much it costs to do the right things against all odds... 😬

@rek I'm excited for your next seven years 🤩 Is hundredrabbits exactly as old as your time on Pino or is it older?

Last year I started keeping a hand-drawn calendar. When 2022 was over I bound all the pages together with thread :>.

It's really fun to look through, a good way to see what happened and when. When we're sailing I usually write where we are, notable things we did that day, and add notes on weather.

With this, I can compare what conditions were like on that same day, in another year.

We see peafowl almost everyday here in Beacon Hill Park (they roam freely), but yesterday we saw the peacocks courting peahens for the very first time, with their tail trains all fanned out.

They stand in front of the peahens, and then start spinning, while 'rattlling' their fan tail, moving their wings to show off their golden color.

It is very impressive.

Ginger paradise 😍

I'm having some grated ginger root tea right now. I'm on theme.

At the very southern end of Victoria(BC), you can walk all along the log-strewn beach. You can usually log-skip for a long while. During times of the year where there is less driftwood, walking on the stone beach is also nice (love the sound of waves retreating from a stone beach).
Parts of the shore is lined with rocky walls, and some bits can be challenging to cross (esp at high tide), but it's a good way to fight restlessness.
Thankful to have this place just a short walk away :>

Mike McCabe

@rek I love the focus of log skipping! Just enough concentration needed — for the body — to free the mind, for being in the moment.

Avi Bryant

@rek I walked the Dallas Rd beach for the first time just recently and it hugely improved my impression of Victoria.

ALMOST done with re-drawing all of the assets for Oquonie :rek_omnicat_wah: *phew*.
All I've got left to do is the idle animations for the wizards, and other NPCs, and to correct some small errors in some of the walls and floors.

Veeeeeeeeery excited :>.

@rek the sprites are super good!! i didn't realize you were redrawing the *entire thing* until dev wrote it and then i was like "oh shit, those are chunky pixels??!!!"

Sketchwhale

@rek I have such fond memories of Oquonie, so it's wonderful you're finding ways to keep it alive/"bring it back".

R E K

Waaaah I'm done! It's DONE!

All of the assets for Oquonie are finished 🎉 🥳 !!!

HA. Figured out what went wrong: the rubber seal was bad, and so oxygen found its way in.

Tested the seal by putting water in the jar today, and flipped it upside down. Water flowed out.

Always test the seals :blobhaj_reach:

@rek when something like this happens i always say to myself "well, now the contents of this can have been sacrificed to the almighty fungi, it's alright", haha

@rek the artwork for Oquonie is just so gorgeous. I love how well it translated to lower-res.

Pixoshiru

@rek i still have the Oquonie book, you’ve made such a precious world, there ❤️

A very handy Ohm's Law graphic when calculating the value of components in a circuit.

Think I'm going to re-draw this and keep it near my desk :>.

@rek oh that wheel seems very complicated! i prefer the equations here and just rearranging for what i want to find

I *think* I've found the right adapter to connect our old regulator to a paintball tank for making fizzy water :>!
This tank will be far more convenient to carry/refill than our old 5kg tank. If one paintball tank isn't enough (say we go though it too fast, we can easily get another one).

John Kaniarz

@rek what’s your setup? I’m using a paintball tank adapter in my Soda Stream now, but I hate how it wastes gas by using it for agitation.

My original setup was an automotive valve stem mounted in a soda bottle top, but it wasn’t reliable enough.

R E K

Having fizzy water is a great way to drink less alcohol :>. Been lessening my intake lately, and this will help.

Last fall I worked on some tanuki characters for my friend Chase's kanji-learning app for Android: Kanji Study.
The update was released last month. There's a dark version with b&w assets, and a regular one with colored versions :>. (There are 11 tanuki in total)

@rek I loved seeing this cute monster pop up in Kanji Study! Thanks for making it

When Dev & I first made Oquonie, we based a lot of assets on things we had around us when living in Tokyo.

We used to grow avocado plants from the pits and kept them in little umeshu glasses (pictured on the right).
We also would sprout potatoes and grow plants with them for fun (little plant up front).

In Japan a lot of houses keep PET bottles full of water in specific spots on their property (nekoyoke 猫よけ, to scare away cats) so this is what I drew here too :>.

@rek I loved Oquonie back in the day, especially the artstyle! It's great to hear more about the origins of the game :)

@rek thanks for sharing this snippet, super cozy to know some of the history :~~

@rek Why someone need a pet bottle full of water to... scare cats? :)
