For my birthday, I'd really like it if my beloved fedi could spread word far and wide of Kitsune Tails. It's a platformer with a heartwarming story featuring queer main characters and personal discoveries in classic SMB3 style. You can find trailer, screenshots, and wishlist links here: kitsunegames.com/kitsunetails

It's coming out this year and the team and I have been working hard on it for several years now. Most of the team is queer in some form so by boosting you'd not only be making me happy on my birthday, but supporting a bunch of queer creators making queer art as well

found a website where you can get free and personalized legal advice about your rights as an EU citizen called Your Europe Advice europa.eu/youreurope/advice/in

it's an NGO with over 60 lawyers contracted by the EU commission. they also work with SOLVIT which will actually mediate in disputes between EU nationals and countries that aren't their home country regarding the violation of EU rights ec.europa.eu/solvit/index_en.h and gently remind govt institutions of your rights as an EU citizen

i'm just leaving these here in case anyone ever needs these like i do right now

@eniko Really good to know, thanks for sharing :D

Eniko Fox

im honestly baffled this is not more well advertised. especially for people in conflict with an EU govt about their rights as an EU citizen, SOLVIT seems to make the problems just evaporate once they get into it

"elon destroyed twitter", come to fedi

"reddit CEO sold out reddit communities", come to fedi

"tumblr CEO is heading transphobic harassment campaign", come to fedi

idk man i just feel like shit like this is gonna keep happening. and shit will go down on fedi too. difference is on fedi you can move when some little tyrant gets their head too far stuck up their own ass

@eniko better yet, you can set up your own tiny instance for you and people you care about. No geekery required thanks to folks like masto.host

It’s lovely to be able to defederate from and source of vileness without having to ask an admin and hope they agree.

@eniko@peoplemaking.games I ended up going more than a bit back to Tumblr because if folks fleeing Twitter to go there, but I had already been trying to spend more time here even then. It's gonna hurt to lose my contacts again as they pick Cohost or Bluesky and I just give up on following them there.

Maxtimot

@eniko regarding the "shit will go down on fedi", I really wish people would fully understand that the fediverse is not a monolithic social network like the other mainstream ones

Haven't watched hbomberguys video all the way through yet but it's uncanny how much my experience with plagiarism is similar to his. I made a viral tweet about proper isometric block height about 10 years ago and some dude writing books in the gamedev sphere named TrueValhalla just reposted my tweet, with image, verbatim

When I called him out on it he just brushed it off and said "this isn't Wikipedia" so he didn't need to credit me. Then not long after he got in trouble for pilfering other people's artwork (without licensing or credit) to promote his new book, because the artist had a way bigger audience than i did back then. A bunch of other smaller stuff I can't remember also came to light

Guy was a serial plagiarist and supposedly a fucking author? Ridiculous. Last I checked he's still active and probably still stealing other people's work to promote himself

*googles* oh it looks like the latest news is he's moved on to scamming people in the web3 crypto games space

@eniko@peoplemaking.games Not even sure if I see what on earth Wikipedia has got to do with this 😅 I'm pretty sure stealing is considered an issue outside of Wikipedia as well 🤔
I wonder if he'd use the same argument if he got caught shoplifting haha

I'm not at all surprised that that kind if guy got into web3, but didn't he get the memo? NFTs are dead AI is the new hotness. I am actually surprised that he's not using MidJourney and calling himself an artist though. Same type of person: lazy, entitled, and utterly narcissistic.

@eniko question that you may or may not want to answer: if I buy on Itch, does it cost you money if/when I redeem on Steam?

Eniko Fox

Why would I want to be normal? I don't wanna be divided by my length

Mozzarella Mommy

@eniko but orthogonality implies being completely different than the other axes. 👀

Beatrix

@eniko there’s so much more vectors you could be than normals

Nick from Toronto

@eniko But if your unit of length is the 'Eniko', then you'll be fine.

Eniko Fox

while itch creator day is over the sale on my games is still running over at eniko.itch.io/ until midnight pacific time thursday

our finances are going to be dangerously tight by the time we launch kitsune tails next year, so any support is very appreciated 🙏

new to mastodon? do you make cool shit? if you've got under 100 followers, reply to this with 1-4 images of stuff you've made and i will boost you to my 5.8k followers, because i want people who do creative work to find a place on mastodon

please note i will be spacing out boosts to not spam my followers too much

EDIT: if i miss your post it's likely you're on an instance mine has muted, I'm sorry, but there's nothing I can do about that

Nawer

@eniko I just make music and sound effects but whatever I want to find people

FYI if you see posts about how "cohost is paying $46,000 a month for 12,000 users" please know that the vast majority of that is wages for the people actually working fulltime on the product, as they refuse to have people work for free or for subsistence wages

Mocking them for what is constantly trumpeted as the ethical way to run a business is pretty crass if you ask me

EDIT: some people are trying to point out the wages aren't the problem but when you mock them for having 46k in expenses a month for a website that serves 12k people then you're effectively saying the wages are the problem because most of that is fair wages!

I've even seen some people do back of the napkin math like "ok so I use this hosting then pay two mods with low wages", NO. WRONG. And what? You're gonna run a business without legal services? Tax services? Payroll?

So your business plan is to not pay yourself or engineers, underpay a couple mods, and somehow avoid all the overhead inherent to running a business? Okay cool good chat

Idk man I thought they had an uphill battle trying to run a business that is both sustainable and ethical under late stage capitalism too but I don't think it's right to mock them for trying and misrepresent the reality of their financials while doing so

Staying on twitter because you need the income is an extremely poor long term plan because it will only continue worsening over time

The longer you wait to build a community elsewhere the harder it'll be when you finally have to because twitter can no longer sustain you

"Oh well thats easy for you to say you have 5000 followers on mastodon"

1. Yes because I took my own advice and aggressively invested in other places immediately when the writing for twitter was on the wall

2. I had two and a half times that amount of followers on twitter, AND I'm poor enough that we couldn't run heat all winter, AND I was still on the tail end of a nervous breakdown when I moved here. It was not "easy", but it was necessary, so I did it, because that's how it is on this bitch of an earth

I don't post this to be mean. I'm posting this because I'm concerned for your future

@eniko also, people don't need to quit Twitter “cold turkey”: they can start setting up their presence elsewhere while still holding their place there, so it doesn't even have to be as dramatic as some people try to paint it. And the sooner the start, the earlier they'll have a decent following elsewhere and realize that Twitter didn't have to be the be-all-end-all of their network.

Nina Roussakoff

@eniko It's so low effort as well - all you have to do is have an account and copy-paste your tweets if people are still really attached to Twitter. Heck if their income depends on it, it's an easy way to increase reach.

But people aren't doing it and I think a part of it is the Ostrich Effect. It's too much to face the possibility that Twitter might end up dying. Too scary. So rather than prepare, the brain shuts down and pretends it's not happening.

Saw a headline saying "70 percent of doctors say COVID misinformation has negatively impacted patients’ health" and my first thought was: I bet, a bunch of people got covid thanks to the misinformation that the pandemic's over

Jenniferplusplus

@eniko it would seem that the corollary to that headline is 30% of doctors have been negatively impacted by Covid misinformation

Eniko Fox

people seriously posting like "use a chrome extension to hide all tweets from verified accounts! fight the power!"

and like. maybe instead of participating in the corrupt, toxic, pay-to-play fascist recruitment network you could just *not use twitter* and use something else? cause i guaran-fucking-tee you that quitting twitter will send a stronger signal than continuing to engage while hiding some posts

idk just feels like we've hit the "i'll do literally anything to protest what's happening at twitter except quit twitter" stage and like, you're just giving him what he wants

@eniko would be cool if someone built a tool to search for accounts that stopped posting in the last 6 months and then showed you the final tweets from those accounts.

Inken Paper

@eniko the internet does a great job of highlighting the futility of symbolic protest when the people your message is directed at aren't even aware of your existence, definitely aren't listening, and will probably find a way to break your plugin.

Gen X-Wing

@eniko Amateurs, I hide all tweets by not being there.

Yes I miss a few things (pretty much just info posting), but I rather err on the side of not dealing with twatter.

Getting real hard to not run heat as the temps indoors are approaching 13C/55F 😞

Eniko Fox

Anyway it's funny people think I'm some big time successful indie dev. Well folks this is what being a hotshot indie dev looks like, not being able to run your heat so your money will last until your next game comes out. Living the dream

Still a lot better than working an office or service industry job during a plague though

Eniko Fox

i've been introduced to morton order/texture swizzling/z-order curves and i just wanna say thanks, i hate it

Josh Jersild

@eniko oh yeah I had to deal with this a couple jobs ago - was writing a mobile GPU device driver and was trying to use the texture unit to accelerate vertex/index buffer copies (since the built-in memcpy on the chip was shit for perf) and had to deal with how the "textures" (basically reinterpret-casted vertex buffers) were being interpreted in that space for the copying

good times
